Robi distributes smart canes to empower visually impaired users

Mobile operator Robi Axiata PLC has launched an innovative cane distribution programme to support people with visual impairments, part of its digital inclusion drive tied to White Cane Safety Day.

At a ceremony on Thursday at Robi’s corporate office in the capital, senior company officials — including Chief Corporate & Regulatory Officer Shahed Alam and Director, Public Affairs & Sustainability, Sharif Shah Jamal Raj — joined Ridwan Hossain, CEO of Dristi Technologies, to hand over the devices.

Developed by Dristi Technologies, the “Avas Smart Cane” features obstacle detection with audio prompts and haptic feedback to help users navigate more safely and independently.

Advocates say such assistive tools can ease daily barriers in mobility, education and employment for Bangladesh’s visually impaired community.

“We believe innovation should serve people,” said Shahed Alam. “This smart cane initiative reflects our commitment to building an inclusive digital society by enhancing independence and safety for the visually impaired.”

Robi said the roll-out is being implemented with seven partner organisations: Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute & Hospital, the Visually Impaired People’s Society (VIPS), RealView, Blind Education and Rehabilitation Development Organisation (BERDO), Doors of Inclusive Society (DIS), Nahor Initiatives and Sporsho Foundation.
