The Disappearicons 50 Binge (part two)!

So. A little while ago I signed up for this binge hosted by disappearicons and, of course, decided to have Blur as my subject. I didn't get started right away, and that's where I screwed up. Because when I got home today at four, I checked my friends list and realised I'd forgotten to even start. So what did I? Spent the next six hours eating, drinking (iced tea sometimes, alcohol at others) and churned out fifty of what I think are quality icons. Some I'm not completely happy with, but over all I think they all turned out rather well.

I'm just happy I was able to get this thing finished.

7 Breedism Icons

Alright, a little backstory on these.

Three days after my 19th birthday last year, my beloved dog, Duke, passed away at the age of 12. Eleven days after, we went looking for a new dog (it really does get lonely and our greyhound became very depressed). We found an ad for a five-month-old female boxer/lab mix. Upon meeting her, we fell in love, renaing her Moony and taking her to her forever home that very day. When my father came home that night, he realised Moony did not, in fact, look like a boxer/lab. She looked like a pitbull mix.

Sure enough, my dearest Moony was a pitbull. But how could she be? She was so sweet, so loving. I immediately began doing research and stumbled upon hounds_of_hell, an accident I am forever grateful for because suddenly I realised, these dogs are not vicious. They're family pets. They're protectors. Vicious dogs? My dog is afraid of plastic bags and the vaccuum cleaner.

Frm hounds_of_hell, I discovered breedists_no, a community against the unfair discrimination of "bad breeds" (dobermans, rottweilers, german shepherds, akitas, chows, american pitbull terriers, staffordshire terriers, etc).

So what is breedism? Well, it's a little like racism and sexism, but against specific breeds (to state the obvious). If you peruse the entries in hounds_of_hell, petbulls and breedists_no, you'll find articles blatantly flaunting the idiocy of the media and the "breedists" who believe that no bad breed is safe. They are ticking timebombs.

Ask any proper pitbull owner and they'll tell you that these dogs are just big teddy bears with big teeth.

Now the original point of my post. I've finally decided to make anti-breedism, pro-pitbull icons (other breeds to come soon). Some are of my Moony and some are taken from GettyImages, but all of them are just of sweet pitbulls. They're not artistic, they're not spectacular and the focus of them is the text, so don't expect anything spectacular in the way of icon-making.

The following are of my own pit/lab mix, Moony. If you use either of the following two, you must credit. They are, after all, my dog.

See? Not the best. But they're cute, right? I mean, come on. It's a pitbull in a tutu!

Full Icon Tutorial: Chiaki Kuriyama

Alright, first icon tutorial, so be gentle if I'm not clear enough. Just let me know and I'll fix it up pretty-like.

Today we're going to be going from

using PS7.

We'll start with a lovely picture of Chiaki Kuriyama from the Princess Photobook as Sleeping Beauty, downloaded from welovechiaki

First things first; you're going to crop the image to your liking. Remember, you don't want to crop it so the image is in the center. This gives you little to no room to play with. Rotate it, flip it, whatever you think looks best.

Duplicate the layer once, desaturating the top layer, setting it to "Soft Light":

And upping the contrast on the background. For this one, I put the contrast at about 40 and lowered the brightness so Chiaki's nose didn't disappear.

We're not going to touch the sharpness on this one. I realise this makes it look fuzzy and a bit awkward at this point, but it adds to the glow-like feel of the original image. Trust me on this one, sharpening makes it look yucky.

Now, we're going to create a new layer between the second and third layer. Fill it in with #465663

Set it to exclusion and you'll have this:

Now, we could leave it like this, but it looks far too washed out. So we're going to create another layer on top and fill it with #662620 and set it to "Soft Light":

We end up with this:

Don't worry, the hard part's over now. Now create another new layer and use the "Foreground to Transparent" gradient with white selected as your foreground colour. Drag it from the bottom right-hand corner to just above the middle of the icon, pulling it at a slight angle. Toy with the gradient to your liking and you should have something like this:

At this point, your icon will look like so:

One more step, grasshoppa.

You can either put your own text in, or use someone's text brush, which I did. For this one, I found a lovely brush made by lostfaithdesign from a Greenday lyric.

You could add a border if you'd like, but I thought it looked lovely all on it's own. Sort of a soft glow to it.

Your final product should look a bit like this one:

If you have any questions or complaints, let me know. I'd love to see how others icons turn out using this tutorial, so if you want to show it off, here's your chance. I'd also suggest that you don't follow this step-by-step, colour-by-colour. It makes things really boring and you can definitely tweak this one to make some fabulous, very original icons of your own. This is, after all, a very basic tutorial and meant to be more of a stepping stone. So stretch your wings, darlings ;)

Final product is up for grabs. Just make sure to credit elixir_icons.

Yes, more icons. I was looking through some of my images and made twenty-three bases out of some of my favourite Chiaki Kuriyama (Go-Go Yubari from Kill Bill) pictures. They were just too beautiful to touch, so they're all very simple.

I know, I said Disco Pigs, and those are coming along quite nicely, but I was looking through my (half-done) screencaps and decided that the very few amount of Four Rooms and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern caps would do quite nicely.

Once I finish capping both movies, there'll be more bases and a few text icons. Remember, no hotlinking.

And yes. Gary Oldman and Tim Roth make me very very happy.

Now, on to more pressing matters: Which of my screencaps would people like icons out of? Keep in mind, the requests for movies I've not iconned yet will be filled later than those that have not been made into icons yet. And if you'd like anything more specific (text, effects, animation), let me know, otherwise it will just be bases (a la the Sid & Nancy batch).

The obligatory stick post

I've finally decided to create a community for my icons and such, rather than keeping two seperate journals. This makes things a whole lot easier for me as now I don't have to log out and log back in to post anything. Meaning more frequent posting after I've created a new batch.

This is also going to be public, for the time being. I'm going to try letting everyone see my icons once more and if someone does steal an icon without crediting (bases not so much, but customised icons in particular) and does not fix it when I ask I will put your name up for all to see. Because really, how much time does it take to credit someone?

The community is closed to all but me, but you're free to friend it and unfriend it as you wish. Either way you'll be able to see the icons.

That said, there are a few basic rules that you must must must abide by:

:: always always credit my icons in keywords
:: comment and tell me which icons you like in particular (this helps me to know what to make more of)
:: if you'd like any customisation done to any icons, just ask
:: I will make other graphics if asked nicely (friends only banners, headers, etc)
