Welcome to ELIS
The official website of the European Language Industry Survey.
ELIS 2026 survey open 1-31 Jan 2026
Are you are active in the European language industry, as a language professional, a member of a language department or language company, or as a student or trainer of future language professionals?
This is where you can share your expectations and concerns.
The results will be communicated and discussed at an online event on 17th March 2026.
NEW: quarterly market updates
Language companies expressed the need for more regular updates focused on the basic market performance and expectation questions.
To meet this requirement, a separate update survey has been created that will remain active throughout the year to monitor the market sentiment on a quarterly basis. Apart of the profile questions about country and size, this new survey form is limited to just two questions: How did the previous quarter perform?, and How do you expect the current quarter to develop?
The survey is currently intended specifically for language service companies. It is available in English only and can be accessed directly at ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/ELIS_LSC_update. The form will not be accessible during the last week of each quarter, to update the final performance results of the previous quarter and to prepare the form for the next one.
While the form is accessible, the current results can be viewed in real-time at ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/publication/ELIS_LSC_update. A summary file showing the results of all quarters will be made available in the repository and will be updated at the end of each quarter.

ELIS 2022 follow-up survey
The data for the original ELIS 2022 study was gathered before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and just as pandemic restrictions were beginning to be eased. While the system was already under some pressure, the impact of the war has greatly accelerated inflation and created other impacts for the language industry. For this reason the ELIS partners feel it is imperative to conduct a short follow-up survey to test how the war, rising inflation and other issues such as talent recruitment, have played out in the first quarter. The deadline to take part in the survey is close of business on Monday, 30th May.
A webinar planned for early June will present the results of the survey and feature an expert industry panel providing commentary on the analysis. You will need to have registered on this site to be able to access the webinar and download the full report.
ELIS focuses on the industry trends, expectations and concerns of a wide range of language industry stakeholders, including language service companies, independent language professionals, training institutes with translation and interpreting-related training programmes, language departments in private companies, public administrations, and language service buyers.
ELIS was originally initiated by European Union of Associations of Translation Companies (EUATC) a decade ago and is now a joint initiative by international language industry associations and organizations. Apart from the EUATC, those participating are the European Language Industry Association (Elia), the European Master’s in Translation (EMT), the European Regional Centre of the International Federation of Translators (FIT Europe), the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA), the European Commission’s Language Industry Platform (LIND) and Women in Localization (WiL).
AI continues to dominate the discussion at most language industry forums. ELIS 2026 keeps monitoring the position of all industry stakeholders and explores some direct operational consequences of AI use, such as actual post-editing and interpreting practices.
On the HR front, this edition digs deeper into matters of gender and inclusion policy while keeping an eye on internship and recruitment practices.
And of course ELIS 2026 maintains its focus on market evolution, expectations and concerns, which remain at the core of all ELIS surveys.
All ELIS survey results from the last decade can be accessed from this site’s REPOSITORY area. However, you must register first before you can access the REPOSITORY.
