1- Install gvim (it'll invoke the normal anyway, not the GTK version)
2- Put set clipboard=unnamed in your $HOME/.vimrc

3- Save and test it out. Now you can happily use your mouse

(Otherwise, we will need to use the Shift press button whenever we want to copy and paste.. which is troublesome - at least for me!!!)

Jarang aku tulis blog pasal phone ni, tapi sekarang aku nak try tulis review pasal phone ni, memandangkan ramai yang bertanya.

Phone ni baru je dilancarkan pada 13 Oktober 2017 lepas dengan harga pasaran semasa RM1, 299. Dilengkapi dengan dual camera depan dan belakang, jadi korang boleh buat kesan bokeh dengan mudah.

Phone ni korang beli online kalau nak di Lazada, Vmall (aku rasa ni online retailer rasmi Huawei/Honor). Spesifikasi phone ni seperti berikut (sumber sini):

64GB (tak boleh tambah dengan sdcard)

I found the solution when we could not use wicd-gtk connection with auto DNS set (not sure why!)

Put this (and replace the respective network device assignation) in

Trip ke Perth dan sekitar Australia Barat

Alhamdulillah kami sekeluarga berpeluang bermusafir sekitar Australia Barat (West AU) pada November 2016. Tempoh berjalan adalah sekitar satu minggu dan saya telah memandu kereta sewa dalam jarak hampir 3,000km merentas hampir sebahagian Australia Barat. Pada waktu tersebut saya bawa juga laptop saya untuk bekerja disebabkan pada waktu berkenaan kontrak kerja saya adalah secara "part time" jadi tiada cuti bergaji, jadi saya kena bertugas pada waktu malam. Kebetulan di Australia Barat ni tidak digalakkan memandu pada waktu malam kerana banyak haiwan liar seperti kangaru yang suka kepada cahaya lampu kenderaan. Kadang-kadang kalau memandu di sekitar West AU ni anda boleh lihat bangkai kangaru di tepi-tepi jalan, berkemungkinan dilanggar oleh kenderaan yang berada di jalanan.

Keeping in the best shape while working as a remote staff

Remote employment is not for everyone. It requires discipline, ability to work independently, proper time management and other related things (stable broadband, stable electricity, understanding spouse etc :) ).

Apart from those thing, how about the change of the work location itself? I've been working remotely from different houses in New York, Washington DC, Perth (West Australia), Skudai (Malaysia), Bagan Datok (Malaysia), Ampang (Malaysia, most of the time) and lately - I tried to work from an Island - the Perhentian Island. This island is reachable around 45 minutes from the Kuala Besut Jetty. Pretty awesome journey and nice view since the weather was good.

We (the whole family.. my wife and I, plus our two kids) went on the boat and saw this awesome creature - a turtle! The turtle managed to float itself to the surface for a while but unfortunately that time I was not ready with my camera. So I just put my action cam in the water to take a close picture. Our boatman later offered himself to dive an took the video of the turtle in the floor of the ocean. Awesome, huh?

The water is so clear that we could see through the water to the bottom of the ocean. Awesome.

I brought along my laptop (MacBook 2015) as I was on-call on two days within our four-days trip there. We stayed at Arwana Resort in Pulau Perhentian Besar. When we first arrived there - there was no phone line connection at all?. I just felt unconformable as we can't be sure if something happens to our family member on the main land we couldn't know about it due to that silly situation. Luckily the situation was temporary and the connection went back during our second day there. I used two phone lines Digi and Celcom. Digi was non functional there and Celcom's connection was good. So I don't have to worry about any server downtime since I could reach the infrastructure through VPN connection if anything comes up.

After we reached back the mainland I then drove my car heading to the South - Kuala Terengganu through Pantai Timur Highway (LPT) and on the next day back to the city - Kuala Lumpur. The road traffic was smooth. However during that one hour drive I was paged by two servers' downtime alerts so I have to find a pit stop to check the infrastructure issue. This took it took a bit longer since the nature of the issue was not so easy. Luckily my wife was understanding enough so I could work calmly to handle the situation.

Yeah, it took a long route to reach there - Besut - almost 500KM from KL (hence, it means around 1,000KM for return trip) But the satisfaction is undeniably high. We managed to stop at one of a food stall around Pantai Penarik in Kuala Terengganu during the en route back to KL, the view was quite good too.

I could do the setup quite simple in CentOS, but that's not the case for Ubuntu and Debian.

For Debian, I just followed this tutorial. We need to add an extra network card virtually as noted here

For Ubuntu that I used (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS) it seems that I had another problem, there was no eth0....but renamed to enp0s3 etc which quite yucky...

So I need to get back the eth0 convention, hence I need to this first, refer here .. then only I could proceed with the manual network card assignment as in here

Cara mengatasi isu driver Wi-Fi pada laptop HP

Saya menggunakan laptop HP yang menggunakan driver RTL8723BE. Installation Linux secara default pada distro Ubuntu, OpenSuSE nampaknya tidak mengenalpasti driver berkenaan secara default.

Saya jumpa satu pautan di sini yang membolehkan kad Wi-Fi tersebut berfungsi.

Ringkasnya:

Langkah 1:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rtlwifi-new-dkms

dan reboot.

Sekiranya tidak dapat dikesan juga, tambah langkah berikut:

Langkah 2 (jika perlu):

echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=2"  | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

Dan reboot semula.

Untuk saya, peranti Wi-Fi tersebut hanya dapat berfungsi apabila saya melakukan kedua-dua langkah 1 dan langkah 2.

As ffmpeg compilation might varies by default in your distro, this one is tested on 16.04. Else you can happily recompile ffmpeg from git with your preferred flag

US Field Trip - Washington D.C

Washington D.C ni tak ubah macam Putrajaya, ia terletak berhampiran negeri Virginia. Oleh kerana saya memilih untuk menyewa kereta (mintak Sedan, tapi dapat 4WD alike, Chevrolet Equinox. Bayar sama harga Sedan) jadi sebenarnya saya telah memandu merentasi beberapa negeri di USA. Dari New York lalu New Jersey, lalu Delaware, lalu Maryland. Lebuhraya mereka lebih kurang sama macam lebuhraya PLUS kita, tapi sistem agak berbeza sedikit. Untuk yang memilih membayar guna cashless, mereka ada laluan sendiri. Lepas tu, masa saya dalam perjalanan balik ke NYC dari DC, bayar tol USD12+ guna duit tunai USD100...jurutol tu kata takde duit tukar!! Dia suruh pos balik duit tu. Tak boleh lari pun sebab ada kamera. Oleh sebab saya plan nak datang semula ke USA lagi kalau ada rezeki, saya mintak bantuan tuan rumah sewa AirBnB saya tolong poskan duit tunai tu. Agak menyusahkan.. kat Malaysia mana ada jurutol takde duit tukar!

Ke DC ni sebenarnya saya nak tengok sendiri.. White House tu! Tempat ni actually besar.. dan berbentuk bulatan yang sangat besar.

Kat bawah ni gambar anak saya main di padang, berlatarbelakangkan Capitol House yang dalam renovation agaknya.

Ni antara mercu tanda Washington DC tu.. tiang dari kejauhan hehe.

Orang US ni suka buat muzium kot... banyak gila muzium depa. 3 hari kot baru abis round semua muzium.

USA field trip - New York City (part II)

Kalau nak masuk ke USA ni, banyak prosedurnya, tetapi berbaloi bila dah lepas jejak kaki ke sana. Tempoh dibenarkan berada di US ni adalah sekitar enam bulan untuk B1/B2 visa holder.

Untuk tempat-tempat dalam USA ni biasanya kalau nak lawat, kita boleh beli pas masuk yang gabung sekali banyak tiket di dalam satu buku tiket. Tengok apa jadual kita dan baru buat keputusan samada berbaloi beli tiket banyak-banyak sekaligus atau bayar bila masuk. Salah satu syarikat yang menjual kad pas masuk ni adalah pelanggan kepada majikan saya, iaitu CityPass.

Tempat-tempat menarik dilawati di New York City:

Kami ke New York!

Macam mimpi! Ye.

Saya bekerja dengan sebuah syarikat perisian sumber terbuka yang mempunyai pejabat utama di Manhattan, New York City sejak tahun 2015. Syarikat ni adalah syarikat yang mengamalkan sistem remote staff, di mana hanya sekitar 5 orang sahaja pekerja yang berada di dalam HQ, dan selebihnya di serata USA dan luar US. Sehingga akhir tahun 2015, saya satu-satunya pekerja dari Malaysia dan juga satu-satunya pekerja Muslim di situ. Saya bertugas mengikut waktu Eastern Time (EST) di mana NYC berada di dalam zon waktu yang sama.

Syarikat ni biasanya akan buat annual meeting, dan buat masa ni trend nya tiga tahun sekali, di mana sebelum ni pernah dibuat pada tahun 2012, dan saya pergi pada tahun 2015.

Untuk ke USA ni dari Malaysia, kita kena apply US Visa dulu.. dan kosnya agak mahal, sekitar USD160 seorang. Budak kecik pun kena. So macam kami pergi empat orang, empat visa semuanya. Kadar semasa visa ni kena check di website embassy. Kalau untuk pelawat dan business macam kami, apply visa B1/B2.. dan akan kena masuk temuduga di kedutaan US.

Masa kami ke US tempohari, dalam 29 September 2015 ke 10 Oktober 2015, dekat dua minggu. Sekejap je sebenarnya sebab perjalanan pegi balik pun hampir 24 jam termasuk transit. Kami ambik Emirates (wife yang pilih.. sebab timing dia agak sesuai dgn trip check in/out hotel). Emirates trip dia dari KLIA - Dubai sekitar 5 jam setengah, dan lagi 14 jam dari Dubai ke JFK (John F Kennedy) di NY City.

Sampai je dari aiport saya beli sim card dulu.. yang ada internet sekali. Di airport ni harga dia cekik darah gak, kalau boleh roaming dari Malaysia guna la dulu. Sebab saya malas nak fikir, so beli je. USD75 utk 1GB internet dan call. Lepas tu boleh top up lagi dalam USD20 kot utk 1GB kalo dah habis.

Untuk beberapa hari pertama penginapan kami adalah di bawah tajaan majikan saya. Manhattan ni kira mukim yang besar dalam NYC. NYC ni pulak salah satu bandar dalam New York state. Jadi jangan keliru NYC dgn NY. Macam Bandar Melaka dalam Melaka lah kiranya.. cuma NYC ni jauh lebih besar.

NYC ni banyak tempat menarik, kalau nak ikutkan nak lawat semua.. dua minggu pun belum tentu habis. NYC ni ada lima mukim, Manhattan (kat pulau), Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens dan Staten Island. Pembaca semua boleh rujuk pautan ni.

Things could be straight with Ubuntu, but not in my Centos VPS. So try the following if you met the same problem:

1) $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys must be in 640 permission
2) $HOME/.ssh must be in 0700 permission

It should work right away later on.

As a ROM avid compiler, I don't want to use my local machine to do the compilation job, as it'll use more electricity and reduce and efficiency of doing job.

So I decided to find VPS which has ample hard disk size and big RAM, at least 6GB RAM.

So I found several choices.

Contabo - 6GB RAM and 500GB HDD for EUR 7.99

Waveride - 4GB RAM, 4 cores CPU, 50GB HDD at EUR5

SSDApp - 6GB RAM, Intel Xeon 3.4 Ghz (no detail on cores) and 210 GB SATA III Storage at EUR9
