Greetings Agents:

It has come to our attention that a few of you have yet to fill out the check in form. Rest assured, no complex information and/or secret knowledge is required: all you need to do is follow the simple instructions in the form itself, which are to provide your ao3 username, email and choose from a list of options describing your writing progress for your #elfscouts assignment. No word count, summary and/or text snippets are required.

In addition, the form provides a chance for you to opt-out of the inclusion of your sign up request in the list of requests what will be made public as part of the Cookie Acquisition Project. Even if you planning on withdrawing from the exchange, please fill out the form and confirm your status, as well as whether you'd like to opt out of CAP.

As stated in the rules, if you do not submit your check in form by the end of November 27th, SST (countdown), your assignment will be defaulted and go to pinch hitter. (See the entry in the F.A.Q. on defaulting.) If you are defaulted, you may still submit your fanfic as a cookie, but there will also be a pinch hitter writing for your recipient.

This season saw an amazing turnout for the first round of Bulletproof Elfscouts 2015, with 36 stories written by 30 Agents totaling up to 412,705 words of hard work, blood, sweat, tears, and mission reports. An amazing feat!

We’d like to thank our two cookie writers nightbrights nightbrights and sixtyfour refades and the three elfscouts writers who wrote cookies on top of their initial assignments dollyeo dollyeo, daisyillusive bluedreaming, onyu onyu and troubleseason troubleseason.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to eightninetwo eightninetwo for exhibiting extreme courage, and valour in the face of unreasonable odds and give a huge grateful bow to our pinch hitters plasticine troqes, potter yassan, starwells and monsterplaza.

Though this was the first time this exchange was held, all of the pairings in Bangtan Boys were represented, as well as two crossover pairings. The most popular pairing represented was a tie, between Jin/Suga and Jimin/Jungkook ranking in at 5 stories each, with Suga/V hot on their heels with 4 fics.

A Note from (Mod) J:

I came up with the idea for this exchange in July 2014, in the middle of my college apps process, thinking it would be a fantastic idea to plan to run the first round more than a year and a half later.

As you can see from the very rocky start this round had (which I take full responsibility for, of course), the year-and-a-half-later me didn't agree.

A lot of things happened over the elapsed time that drew me out of fandom—by the time I finished running the second round of the first exchange I founded, I was exhausted and already planning on stepping down from modding entirely. But of course, I didn't want to break my promise to hold this exchange.

Once the exchange started, I was quite overwhelmed with adapting to college life as well as a new workload and other various family and social issues. Of course, though I lashed out at the time, I agree that it was my responsibility to either ensure the exchange was still running smoothly or step down and admit that I had bitten off more than I could chew.

Thus, I get to the main point of my note. I am eternally grateful to the mods who stepped up to take this exchange off my hands. To A and R, who I knew before as good friends and who immediately stepped in to help me with re-doing assignments after various technical issues caused me to lose much of my progress, and to E, who stepped in and emailed me volunteering to co-mod after seeing the struggle I had on Twitter.

Furthermore, at the time, I had still agreed to take some responsibility for the exchange. Instead of doing this, however, I continued to struggle to budget time for anything exchange related until I stepped out of the process entirely, which I apologize for sincerely. Yet the rest of the mods picked up the work without complaint and did an absolutely incredible job of doing so.

So, to all of you, I am so so so grateful. You lifted a huge weight from my shoulders when I was feeling lost, and did so without protest. You ran this exchange better than I ever would have, and I'm so happy that this exchange—your exchange—turned out to be a success. Did we, the JAEGR Task Force, know quite what was going to happen when the Bulletproof Elfscouts Initiative began? Probably not, but that’s not to say we we’re excited, anticipating, and optimistic about the efforts of our agents, our support network, and all of the lurking aids in the shadows. To say it has been a wild ride would be an accurate representation of this journey, and everyone, everyone has made this exchange what it is.

It’s been incredibly fun, with the JAEGR’s lifting up and working with participants who have been more than helpful and encouraging with us to make this a success. I’d like to really thank the JAEGR Task Force, because while I know it’s our job to work together to make sure all of the Agent’s get back and the missions are completed, it’s hard work. You all made it worth the while.

THIS WAS THE GREATEST THING. Okay, so, first I just want to say that everyone is awesome and no one can say otherwise. No assignment is easy, and everyone kind of felt like dying at some point (I did, just saying) but you know what? No one did, and that’s probably the greatest thing about it.

While I know you cool crocodiles didn’t get to talk to me all that much, I’ve been here :) Watching :) Waiting :) and cheering on from the sidelines because you are all seriously such superstars for getting here. It’s been awesome, as usual, to work the The JAEGR’s, the Task Force going all out to make sure things go well, and we’re all really damn proud of ourselves. Therefore, by extension, be damn proud of yourselves. In the words of Simba (or something) “we are one.”

From the cluttered desk of Unit Q:

I know some of you might be wondering what is going on with the story Feel the Breath (Right Down to Your Toes). Let me clear some of that up.

The author, who you know now as troubleseason, wrote this as a cookie. In their words, they “never expected a cookie to blow up into a branch of Paris Baguette”. For clarification, they wrote a full fic for their recipient, The Earth Will Have Us, which totally abided by the rules set by The JAEGR Task Initiative.

I have been working with troubleseason, and they ran into some stuff during posting (as you do, y’know). We said it was cool to post the cookie in segments and had planned on it being finished. But, just as shit is part of life, it happens, and instead they will be posting the last part of it AFTER reveals. Spoiler alert, I guess.

Stuff happens, missions get jeopardized, and the story will be finished. Just think of it as an exercise in patience and let the anticipation build before the explosion or something. It’s what I do.

Over the last few months we, the JAEGR Task Force, have had the privilege to get to know our amazing undercover agents. Now that our missions are complete and our agents unmasked, it is high time that you are given the opportunity to get to know one another. After all, a unit is only as strong as the alliances made and maintained. This is also an opportunity for our perspective agents, comrades, and voices in the shadows to speak out and step forward. It’s here, that time you’ve been waiting for and preparing for and (possibly) panicking over. In just a few short weeks, it’ll be time for you to wrap up your stories with a bow and a ’To: and For:’ and send them in to us so we can reveal your story to your recipients. Yes, it’s final submission time! Your stories are due on December 13th, 2015 at 11:59 PM SST. (Here’s a handy countdown!) We hope you’re almost done or at putting the finishing touches on your fics for your lovely recipients! We’re definitely excited to see all of the amazing work you have done and we sincerely hope you are, too.

Before you continue, please take the time to fill out the mandatory survey (with information we’ll need for the reveals post ) you received the link to in your final submission email. Please contact us if you did not receive the email.

Here are a few reminders on submissions:

Your fic must be at least 2,000 words long for the final submission (this does not apply to Cookies).
Your fic must be submitted to us via Ao3 by completing the story you posted for check-in. If you are a participant in the Cookie Acquisition Project, merely post your story now. Detailed final submission instructions are included below.
If your fic is longer than 10,000 words, it’s up to you but we recommend posting your work in chapters for better readability.
For the Gift this work to field, PLEASE MAKE SURE THE AO3 NAME OF YOUR RECIPIENT is correct and filled in.

If you submitted your check-in, when it comes time to fill in your complete story, merely go to the collection works page on ao3, find your story (the only one NOT marked “Mystery Work”) and click “Edit”.

On the Elfscouts Round 1 collection page on ao3, click the post to collection button. You should see a page that looks something like .

You should have already filled out the header sections of your story for the check-in, but in case you need to change something, please see the relevant section below for details. (Or in the case that you’re a pinch hitter posting for the first time.)

1. Tags section

The first section of the Post a New Work section is the Tags section and looks like .

1. First of all, select the Rating from the drop down option.

This is your final rating so please make sure it accurately represents your story. (If you’re not sure, picture your story as a movie and see what rating it would have). Ao3 uses a slightly different rating system than the standard MPAA ratings of G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17, but in general you may rate your story as follows:

Not Rated: Read at your own risk. (Please do not use this rating unless you feel no other option suits; in which case please discuss it with the mods.)
General Audiences: This corresponds to an MPAA rating of G to PG.
Teen And Up Audiences:This corresponds to an MPAA rating of PG-13.
Mature: This corresponds to an MPAA rating of R.
Explicit: This corresponds to an MPAA rating of NC-17.

2. Next you’ll see Archive Warnings. You must select one from the list, but you may select as many as applicable. Your options are:

Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings: If you are choosing NOT to select one of the other Archive Warnings for spoiler reasons, even if it applies, you MUST check this option.
Graphic Depictions Of Violence: If your story contains any violent content that merits a PG-13 through to NC-17 rating. (Think about what it would be rated if it was a movie.)
Major Character Death: If your story contains the death of any major character, and in this context, especially if any BTS member dies. If this constitutes a spoiler, you may choose not to check this option, but you MUST then select Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings and you MUST warn in the Additional Tags and Beginning Notes that you have not warned for an Archive Warning. If it’s a death that’s not really a death, please include this information as an Additional Tag. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, please contact the mods.
No Archive Warnings Apply: If your story does not contain any major character death, graphic violence, rape/non-con or underage content, please select this option, and ONLY this option. Rape/Non-con: If your story contains any non-consensual material, please check this box. Remember, heat sex without explicit consent constitutes rape and must be warned for.

3. The Fandoms box is pretty self-explanatory. Start typing in Bangtan Boys (the full tag is '방탄소년단 | Bangtan Boys | BTS') and allow the website to auto-complete. If you’re writing a crossover or you are including main characters from another group, please include all relevant fandoms.

4. For the Category sections, please check all relationship categories that apply. Your options are:

F/F: femslash
F/M: het
Gen: friendships and other non-romantic/relationship content
M/M: slash
Multi: anything relationship-type content that doesn’t fit under another heading such as poly
Other: anything else

5. For the Relationships section, please start to type in the relationship(s) and allow the Archive to autocomplete. Tags are in the following style:

2. The second field, Gift this work to, is where the ao3 name of your recipient should be. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE AO3 NAME OF YOUR RECIPIENT is correct and filled in. If you are writing a general cookie, the recipient should be elfscouts_mod (tr1ptych). The ao3 username will autocomplete, so make sure you double check by selecting the one the ao3 system gives you. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, please contact the mods. The next section of the Post a New Work section is the Privacy section and will look like . Please DO NOT check any of the boxes for this exchange, as there are readers who may not have ao3 accounts who would still like to read and comment on your story come posting time.

5. Work Text section

The next section of the Post a New Work section is the Work Text section and will look like this for the and this for the . The HTML option is the default option, where you paste in your HTML-formatted story, like you would to send in a post for LiveJournal (basic formatting only: for things like colour or fonts you'll have to use the CSS from the basic work skin, please see below). The rich text option is where you can paste in rich text formatted work, like if you're copying from Word. Results are not 100% guaranteed. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, please contact the mods.

6. Posting!

Finally, you’ll see three options at the bottom like . Please click the Post without Preview option, as you can always go back and edit your story if there are errors.

If you want to use different fonts/colours etc., you’ll need to use the basic work skin and CSS.

Ao3 is very user friendly and uses basic html similar to LiveJournal html editing and the source text editor of AFF (top left button when you edit), though a few formatting options (font, colored text, spacing, etc.) are more limited without the use of skins. The basic CSS work skin you can chose is Basic Formatting and you select it from the .

How to use a work skin:

In your story file:

If you want to change anything, copy and paste the entire text of the Basic Formatting work skin into a new work skin, make your changes (see example below) and then save it with a name you'll remember and select that name instead of Basic Formatting from the when you post your story.

Note on reading the raw work skin (CSS):
The .indent .book .dropcap are examples of a class id which you will include in your span code in your story (don't include the . when you're using it inline in your fic text.) Inside is what the code does to your text.

Important Note: Please remember that you must remain anonymous until the reveals are posted. Do not include any personally identifying information in your notes. In addition, please refrain from saying anything that may be perceived as negative or self-deprecating about your fic or yourself; the mods reserve the right to request that negative content be edited.

For an idea of what a sample filled out story looks like both before and after posting, please see this sample.

You can see how the posted final submissions look at the elfscouts collection page (works view). You can see that, until the mods have revealed a work, it shows us as a Mystery work. Even when the mods reveal a work, it will be anonymous until the author is manually marked visible, which will happen for reveals at the end of the exchange.

How to change your posting date
Ao3 doesn’t let you post-date your fic, but since you’ve all posted your fic for the check-in, that’s the date that will show up as your publication date. Therefore, when it’s revealed to the public it will still have that date as the publication date. This means that it’ll be far down the Bangtan Fandom tag on ao3, which we’re sure both you as writers and we as mods don’t want. So here are simple instructions on how to change the date your fic says it was posted!

1. The mods will sent you an email when your story has been revealed on ao3, letting you know when it will be promoted on LiveJournal and Twitter, and you to change the publication date on your story.
2. Either click the link to your story in the email, or find your story on the elfscouts2015 works page.
3. Click edit on your story.
4. Find the Associations section in the header, and check the box by the “set a different publication date” option.
5. Set the date in the drop down menus to the date in the email you’ve received.
6. Save your change by scrolling to the bottom and clicking the “post without preview” button!.

We ask that all of you send us an update of your story by November 16th, 2015 11:59 PM SST. (Here’s a handy countdown!) Your check-in should be a minimum of 1,000 words. If you have written more than that, fantastic! Go right on ahead as soon as you’re ready and submit your check-in following the instructions below.

Since we’re using Ao3 for check-ins, please follow these instructions carefully. They’re just a little different from the standard txt/doc submission via email with a header, but we hope you’ll find this process more intuitive and it will make things much easier for everyone come final submission time.

Once you’re ready to send in your check in (you can send it in as early as now!):

HEAD OVER to the Elfscouts Round 1 collection page on ao3 and CLICK Post to Collection (on the right side of the screen, under the elfscouts2015 title). You’ll get a Post New Work page with the elfscouts2015 collection already filled in (see 'Post to Collections / Challenges' field in the form).

For the Gift this work to field, PLEASE FILL IN THE AO3 NAME OF YOUR RECIPIENT you will have just received in your check-in notice email. (Not the LiveJournal name you got in your assignment email!)

Are participants allowed to write more than one fic/prompt fill for their recipient?
You most certainly are, in fact, we call these cookies, and they don’t even have to be for a specific recipient! Our only request is to turn in the first fic/prompt fill before working on the second and:
The Cookie must be a minimum of 1,500 words and use appropriate tags and warnings as explained in our submission guidelines, and be posted in the same manner.
Your Cookie must be focused on a member of BTS (Bangtan Boys), though please feel free to play with crossovers.
If you are writing a Cookie for your recipient using their prompts, please respect their squicks and requests.
If you are writing a Cookie for everyone (elfscouts_mod (tr1ptych)) but are using one of your recipient’s prompts, please respect their squicks and requests.

If you’re familiar with posting to ao3, feel free to just fill in the header (please note our requirements in terms of Archive Warnings and Additional Tags, noted in the top notes instructions) and click post! And with that, you have sent in your check in! It’s as easy as that. Please make sure to fill in all the header fields and the summary (preliminary). The bottom notes are optional, but please fill in the top notes using the following format.

1. You must select any applicable Archive Warnings; if you do not wish to do so for spoiler reasons then you must include this in the Warnings section of the HTML code to be pasted into the top notes. ONLY select “No Archive Warnings Apply” if your story does not include ANY of the Archive Warnings, otherwise you MUST select “Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings” even if you are selecting a few other Archive Warnings.
2. For the Additional Tags section, apart from (optional but recommended) genre and au tags, you must tag any additional triggers. If you’re not sure what constitutes a trigger, please consult this helpful list. Remember that this is only check in, and you can add additional triggers as necessary before final submission. If you have chosen not to warn for Major Character Death in the Archive Warnings, you must include a tag that you have not warned for an Archive Warning.
3. For the Notes section, you must post top notes (bottom notes are optional). Please paste in the following HTML code and fill it out.

Once you’ve clicked the post to collection button, you should see a page that looks something like .

The first section of the Post a New Work section is the Tags section and looks like .

1. For Work Title, please key in the title of your fic/submission. This can always be changed later.

2. For Author/Pseud(s), please select the pseud you’d like your story to be posted under. If you don’t have any pseuds, this doesn’t apply. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, please contact the mods.

3. In the Summary box, please include a brief summary. This can also be changed later.

4. The Notes section is where you check the at the beginning option and (if needed) the at the end option to expand boxe(s) in which further notes will be included. If you have chosen not to warn for Major Character Death in the Archive Warnings, you must include a note in the the Beginning Notes that you have not warned for an Archive Warning. The next section of the Post a New Work section is the Associations section and will look like .

1. The first field, Post to Collections/Challenges, will already be filled in with elfscouts2015.

2. The second field, Gift this work to, is where you’ll put in the ao3 name of your recipient, which you will have just received in your check-in notice email. (Do NOT fill in the LiveJournal name you got in your assignment email as some are different!) The ao3 username will autocomplete, so make sure you double check by selecting the one the ao3 system gives you. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, please contact the mods. (If ao3 does not autocomplete the username you've keyed in, double-check by typing this URL into your browser: http://archiveofourown.org/users/usernameofyourrecipient OR http://archiveofourown.org/users/usernameofyourrecipient/pseuds/pseudofyourrecipient (e.g. http://archiveofourown.org/users/tr1ptych/pseuds/elfscouts_mod). 3. The next three check boxes don’t apply for this exchange, except for the This work has multiple chapters option, which you may select if you are choosing to divide a longer work into chapters. Since this is the check-in, you might only want to do this later.

4. The Choose a language section automatically selects English and should be left as such.

5. The Select Work Skin field is where you can select Basic Formatting if you’ll want to include different fonts/colours etc., and will look like .

4. Privacy section

The next section of the Post a New Work section is the Privacy section and will look like . Please DO NOT check any of the boxes for this exchange, as there are readers who may not have ao3 accounts who would still like to read and comment on your story come posting time.

5. Work Text section

The next section of the Post a New Work section is the Work Text section and will look like this for the and this for the . The HTML option is the default option, where you paste in your HTML-formatted story, like you would to send in a post for LiveJournal (basic formatting only: for things like colour or fonts you'll have to use the CSS from the basic work skin, please see below). The rich text option is where you can paste in rich text formatted work, like if you're copying from Word. Results are not 100% guaranteed. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, please contact the mods.

6. Posting!

Finally, you’ll see three options at the bottom like . Please click the Post without Preview option, as you can always go back and edit your story if there are errors.

And that’s it! You have successfully checked-in.

If you want to use different fonts/colours etc., you’ll need to use the basic work skin and CSS.

Ao3 is very user friendly and uses basic html similar to LiveJournal html editing and the source text editor of AFF (top left button when you edit), though a few formatting options (font, colored text, spacing, etc.) are more limited without the use of skins. The basic CSS work skin you can chose is Basic Formatting and you select it from the .

How to use a work skin:

In your story file:

If you want to change anything, copy and paste the entire text of the Basic Formatting work skin into a new work skin, make your changes (see example below) and then save it with a name you'll remember and select that name instead of Basic Formatting from the when you post your story.

Note on reading the raw work skin (CSS):
The .indent .book .dropcap are examples of a class id which you will include in your span code in your story (don't include the . when you're using it inline in your fic text.) Inside is what the code does to your text.

You can see how the posted check-ins look at the elfscouts collection page (works view). You can see that, until the mods have revealed a work, it shows us as a Mystery work. Even when the mods reveal a work, it will be anonymous until the author is manually marked visible, which will happen for reveals at the end of the exchange.

Hello and welcome to the first round of Elf Scouts , the one and only secret santa exchange for the Bangtan Boys (BTS) fanfiction fandom! Below, you will find everything you need to know about the first round of this exchange.

Elf Scouts (Bulletproof Elf Scouts) is a holiday season fic exchange for all writers and readers of Bangtan Boys (방탄소년단 or BTS) fic.

First established on July 14th, 2014 by MOD J, this will be the first round of the exchange. The 2015 holiday exchange will be moderated by The JAEGR Task Force, including Mods J, A, E, G, and R. We are all excited for this holiday exchange and to be working with participants, readers, and supporters of the exchange.

Though Elf Scouts will not be capped in future years, the 2015 season will be capped at 20 ~ 25 participants to ensure that the exchange runs smoothly and will be able to continue in the future.

For Participants ~

❄︎ Please only sign up for this exchange if you are absolutely certain of your ability to commit. This exchange is a time commitment and we ask that all participants commit with that thought in mind. Please do not sign up if you are unsure as to whether you can complete your commitment to your assignment.

❄︎ Please give us an email you check regularly when signing up for the exchange. All information about assignments, check-ins, and final submissions will be communicated through email as well as Twitter and LiveJournal. Any participant that is unresponsive for more than three days when asked to respond will be considered as a ‘drop-out’.

❄︎ All fics must be BTS-centric. While we will allow cross-overs, the main character(s) or pairing(s) of your fic on must be from Bangtan Boys (방탄소년단 or BTS).

❄︎ The minimum word count of this exchange is 2,000 words. This provides nine weeks of time for participants to complete their submissions. Half-way through the exchange, there will be a Check-In of no less than 1,000 words by November 16th, 2015. (Check the countdown!) Naturally, you are encouraged to write more, but this minimum is a standard for all gift-fics written for excited recipients! ❄︎ Need a beta?: If you’d like to find a beta, consult the spreadsheet and claim one here!

❄︎ You will receive an email from the mods when your story has been revealed on the collection, and given instructions on how to change the publication date.

❄︎ Since this is an ao3-hosted exchange, you are allowed to reply to comments left (on ao3) on your story; your username won’t be viewable until reveals. (This is completely optional.)

❄︎ Do not reveal your identity to anyone before reveals! The Big Reveal is one of the most fun parts of any exchange. You don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone, do you? The JAEGR Task Force recommends having a beta who is not participating for this exact reason.

❄︎ Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Should a participant be discovered for plagiarism, they will be publicly identified and banned from all future rounds.

❄︎ Crossposting/Deleting:
After reveals, you may post your fic anywhere you want (LiveJournal, AFF, tumblr, etc.), but we ask that you please wait until then. Something that comes up with the nature of an ao3 exchange is that, yes, the story you have written is entirely your own and you have complete agency over it; however, it was written as a gift for someone. While on a LiveJournal-hosted exchange, you wouldn’t have the option of deleting your story, since it’s ao3-hosted you are able to do so. Therefore, for the sake of honouring your commitment, if for some reason you no longer wish your name to be connected to the story you wrote, rather than deleting it, we require you to orphan your story, thus ensuring that it remains on the archive. (Another option would be to transfer the story to a different ao3 account you own; please contact the mods for help/options.)

If you delete the story you have submitted for the exchange, you will be banned from participating in any further tr1ptych fic events, including elfscouts. This is not a new rule.

❄︎ MISCELLANEOUS ❄︎

Before you go, it is important to note that bangtanexchange will host a Valentine's exchange that begins mid-December. Their assignments are scheduled to be sent out just before the elfscouts final posting deadline. Both elfscouts and bangtanexchange encourage writers to participate in both if they wish! We also encourage writers who have missed our cap to participate in their Valentine’s exchange.

If you are worried about making the time commitment to elfscouts but would still like to participate somehow, please sign up to be a Pinch-hitter using the form in the Pinch Hitter post. Pinch-hitters will be notified of their assignments on as soon as a participant has withdrawn, and will have first priority on extensions.

All submissions must be sent in before or on the designated deadline. Deadlines are set to ensure that all writers are making progress and that everyone is given the support and materials to have a fic at the end of the exchange. If participants do not turn in check-ins within 48 hours after being contacted by The JAEGR Task Force, you will be considered as a ‘drop-out’. If the gift-writer has asked to be contacted in the case of a drop-out, they may deviate from the ‘drop-out’s prompts and select to write a fic for everyone and the drop-out will not receive a fic.

Lastly, we would like to introduce ourselves. After a bit of a bumpy start, elfscouts will be moderated and handled by The JAEGR Task Force. All of us encourage you to contact us with any questions, comments or concerns at any time during the exchange.
