back in my day...

We seem to have this odd situation at work - although for all I know it may not be odd at all!

We get a LOT of people applying to work for us (that's not odd, I assume, in this day and age :) ), but all the emails (they are almost exclusively emails) don't tell us jack shit about why we might want to speak to them - let alone employ them - they're all about how they've got a PhD, and they'd like to work for a 'creative company' and they've got loads of 'fresh ideas'. Well, lovely, well done you. And, sorry, what are you bringing to our firm? I mean...your 'fresh ideas'...you know we don't get to design the work, yeah? It's the artists that do that... and your PhD...has that actually given you a single practical skill you'd like to mention, because your lack of mentioning...makes me think not. And...er..great, that you'd like to work for a 'creative company'. I believe HSBC does a good line in creative accountancy.

And then there's the students (and, you know, we all were students, once), who say 'I haven't got any money, but I've got a great idea for my final show I'd like you to make and I can put your company name on my literature!!' I mean, I don't want to stamp on people's dreams, but...our company has been going for longer than you've been alive. We do okay without the chance of spending thousands and thousands of pounds of our money to make your final show...we're kind of busy doing work we get paid for :)

TBH, I don't mind the students - why not chance your arm? But the job apps...when did it stop being about selling yourself to a company, and start being just announcing you think it would be cool to work there so they should offer you a job?

And you can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't be up for a £2.80 and hour apprenticeship wage :D
