Ashes theory.
So, this is just a theory, based on S1, S2 and Ep1S3. Who knows if it's spoilery or not?? If I'm right (unlikely) then err...hope I don't spoil it all for you if you read this!
"Look, Tyler didn't listen to the Guv, and look what happened to him."
An important line from S1Ep1? It's what Ray says to Alex, whilst explaining what happened to Sam.
A lot of people have taken that to mean that if you stick with Gene, you'll be all right. As if Gene's some sort of Guardian Angel of the gang.
But now we're being hinted at by the arrival of Keats, and the new questions about what really happened to Sam. Maybe Gene isn't as angelic as all that. Maybe you need to stick with the Guv because if you DON'T then Gene will make bad things happen to you...
It seems to me that all of the gang - Shaz, Chris, Ray, Alex, Sam (and perhaps even Gene?) are stuck in this inbetween world because they've all been taken from their 'real' lives too soon. They all have unfinished business. Maybe somewhere they're all stuck, inbetween life and death. Or maybe they're truly dead, but their restless spirits won't allow them to move on.
Or maybe Gene has a grand plan. Maybe he's somehow gathered all these people. Because he has something he needs them to do, or because he needs them around him as his bodyguards. Certainly Ray and probably Chris are devoted enough to him. And when Keats is 'talking' to Alex through the TV screen he says "I don't want you to end up like..." and then bang, bang, bang, we see Ray, Chris and Shaz's faces...Lots of people will think he's been cut off before he says 'Sam', but to me, Sam's the one that got away...the rest are trapped in Gene's kingdom.
Perhaps it was Gene who knocked Sam over in that car - or at least he had something to do with it. Perhaps he set Tony Crane up to do it (we know they existed in the same time in 1973). Perhaps it was Gene who Layton was on the phone to in Ep1 - and Layton was trying to right something in his own life - something Gene was responsible for. And as for Ray, Chris and Shaz, perhaps Gene had something to do with all of their reasons to be there. And we'll find out...
