When I first saw it, I was 20 years old and living in my first apartment in downtown Portland. The TV was the old-fashioned kind with the dial and it only got a few channels. I was in transitional housing to get off the streets, and the TV came with the apartment. That summer I had watched the Fox channel exclusively.

Its airing caught me off guard. I had spent that spring watching what I believed to be the best show of all time, a little short-lived anthology show called Tribeca where every episode was like a mini-movie about different people's lives, and each episode intersected at one restaurant in Tribeca, NYC. It was a 7-episode gem that nobody knew about. I was sad it was cancelled, and I had no idea what was about to take its place in my heart.

And then I saw it: THE X-FILES TRAILER. Aliens. Abduction. Mystery. ALIENS. See, I was a HUGE alien buff. I've believed in their existence since 1990 when I was a hippie staying in Laguna Beach, CA and I met someone who was convinced he witnessed a crashed spaceship on the beach and a government coverup happening in real time in that town. He said he had video to prove it, but I never saw it.

When the X-Files trailer first aired I was probably watching The Simpsons. I was alone in my apartment and the minute I saw Mulder and Scully investigating alien conspiracies on my old, crappy TV, I was hooked. I was a die-hard X-Phile before the show even began. I was one of the first people telling others to watch it, before people really knew about it. I watched it when I could over the years (I didn't always have a television), and I used the theme music as my outgoing voicemail on my phone for a long time. This was my show, my identity. I watched it even to the bitter end, even when Mulder and Scully weren't on it anymore.

I call The X-Files my first fandom, though I didn't spend time on message boards. I was a member of an X-Files Livejournal community, and I still have a Scully user pic with the text "spacegirl" on there. Scully will always be one of my favorite fictional feminist icons.

The X-Files will always be in my heart, even when they add stupid episodes in season 10 and fuck it up and even when I can't finish the reboot because YOU FUCKED IT UP CHRIS CARTER. But that is a story for another day.

I miss age 10 so much. That summer I spent with Sandra is the pinnacle of my youth. I want those lazy, innocent swimmy days back every day that I'm alive.

Finding Sandra again on FB after all these years was devastating. I thought she had moved out of state long ago, because I looked for her for 27 years but could never find her.

It turns out she was in Portland the entire time, and she never looked for me once. My parents even live in the same house and she never tried to make contact.

Out of the many cases of rejection I have experienced in my life and in my youth, this was probably the worst. Worse than even Mindy, my first best friend who rejected me the second she became popular when we were 9 or 10. Worse than any boyfriend rejecting me because I wouldn't lose weight.

Sandra burned in my memory as the one who got away. The friend that could have been. If only I'd had her as my best friend in my teens, I wouldn't have been so alone all those years in middle school and high school. With Sandra in my life that hole would have been filled. We would have had slumber parties and listened to music together. We would have talked about boys and shared books and clothes. We would have been allies against the harsh world of adolescence. Russian-Owned LiveJournal Bans Political Talk, Adds Risk of Spying

There's a lot to love about Get Out, but what I find most interesting is that it puts you in the black person’s POV, which is very different than most other movies. (American) movies are normally told from the POV of the white protagonist. In Get Out you are experiencing the racism in the movie from the black perspective and that’s very interesting to me.

The movie doesn't hold back, and it shows you many different ways in which racism permeates our lives. It makes a horror movie out of something so common, something that to black people is already a thing of horror. Get Out comments on it, points it out, and tells the audience, "hey, this is racist". It doesn't let anyone off the hook.

I really liked it. And I hear it freaked out a lot of white people, so kudos for that.

Shows that I am still watching though I have no idea why:
Homeland. WTF is this show anymore? Sometimes it's still super fun and suspenseful, but most of the time it's just bad. I will probably watch til the bitter end though.

Shows I have given up on completely:
Finding Carter. This show is a total mess, and the original premise doesn't even seem to factor into the story anymore. Also, why do the teenagers get away with everything ever? I mean, her mom is a freaking cop! And everything that happens is either pointless or overly sensational. Gah. I'm so done.

Also Reign. I think I got too bored.

The WTF show of the year:
Making a Murderer, but in a good way. WTF those cops and prosecutors and judges??? If I still had any faith in the justice system when I watched this show, I certainly don't anymore.

"The question is, would you rather have a candidate who supports 60-70 percent of what you support, or almost none of it? And spare me this, 'I’ll vote for an independent because Americans need to move away from the two-party, corrupt system that’s ruining this country' nonsense. Look, if you want to waste a vote based on principles, that’s your choice. I’m telling all of those people right now, Republicans won‘t. In fact, Republicans are hoping that’s exactly what many liberals and independents will do.

The system is what it is and it’s unlikely to ever change. We’ve mostly been a two-party system since the founding of this nation, and definitely have been for the last century and a half. While some liberals will go off and pout in a corner, pointlessly carrying on about how their wasted vote is a 'stance against a system they don’t support,' you know what Republicans will be doing? Voting for Republicans and destroying this country. Republicans overwhelmingly won this past November, not because they were popular or ran the better candidates, but because liberals let them win. For every liberal who didn’t cast a vote, that was essentially a vote for a Republican. The GOP thrives on lower voter turnout and a disjointed Democratic party. Hell, they count on it."

I adopted Cosima 2 days ago. I just can't live without a kitty in my life. I think having another kitty to love is part of the healing process after losing Luna. I didn't expect to find one so quickly but I bonded with Cosima (she was called Autumn) at the Humane Society, and I decided she was the cat for me. 



Cosima (yes, named after my favorite clone in Orphan Black) is the exact opposite of Luna in every way. She's 2 1/2 yrs old, she's small, black, and short-haired. She's friendly, easy-going, good with people. She's compliant, agile, and spunky. She would probably get along well with other pets, and possibly children - but definitely she will get along with my friends. So I don't have to be on guard for any cat attacks when I have people over. 

We're still getting to know each other. She's a cool cat and looks like a panther. I can't wait for all my friends to meet her.

I have sad news to report. Last week, on Monday afternoon, I had to put Luna to sleep because she was too sick and probably in too much pain. She had been suffering from heart disease for almost a year, which was caused by her hyperthyroid. She was on medication for both, but the heart medicine was not enough in the end. I was prepared for this. I knew the heart disease would kill her, and it was only a matter of time. I'm just glad she wasn't any sicker than she was.

I am very sad to lose her, and I miss her so much. But I take comfort in the fact that for the last 2 years of her life she was the happiest she had ever been. She used to be so hostile with people, but she really mellowed out after living in the new place. She loved hanging out in the big windows, looking out at all the nature and wild life. She left this earth a very content, happy and fulfilled cat. 

Luna was 14 years old, and she lived with me for all of her life. She persevered with me through thick and thin, through all my struggles, and in 4 different homes. Though we were separated for a short time, I always remained in her life, watching over her - and I was always her Mommy.



I can't think Colleen enough for helping me out these last 5 years. She took Luna in when she had nowhere else to go. She cared for her, mothered her, and even when she moved back home with me to my new apartment, Colleen continued to help support her and remain in Luna's life. I am so grateful that Luna was cared for until the very end.



Goodbye, my lovely Luna. My Turkish Angora. My fluffy white princess with the crazy David Bowie eyes. You will always be missed. I will remember you and cherish you for the rest of my life.

This is my version of Southwestern Chicken Soup. This soup is very versatile. You can garnish it with different things, and on a hot day you can cool it down with a dollop of plain greek yogurt (or sour cream if you prefer).

You can also add rice, or as I recently tried: a side of hot spanish rice with melted cheese on top. It really completed the meal.


ELECTRICSPACEGIRL'S SOUTHWESTERN CHICKEN SOUP

• 1 1/4 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts*


• 1 - 2 tablespoons oil


• 2 quarts chicken broth


• 1 package (16 ounces) frozen corn


• 1 can (15.5 ounces) black beans, undrained**


• 1 can (15 ounces) diced or roasted tomatoes, undrained


• 1 medium onion, chopped


• 1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies


• 1/2 teaspoon salt


• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder


• 1 teaspoon ground cumin


• 1/4 teaspoon oregano


• 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

1. Throw chicken, broth, corn, black beans, tomatoes, green chilies and chopped onion into a pot.


2. Mix together oil, salt, garlic powder, cumin, oregano and chili powder, and stir into soup.


3. For crock pot: cook on low for 2 - 2 1/2 hours, just until chicken starts falling apart when you cut into it. For stove top: heat on high until boiling, then simmer for 2 hours or until chicken starts falling apart.


4. Take out the chicken breasts, shred with two forks and stir it back into the soup.


5. Serve with a spoonful of sour cream or plain greek yogurt, shredded cheese, cilantro, and/or crumbled tortilla chips.

* You can use frozen chicken breasts if you prefer. Just cook it an hour or two longer.

** I recommend the cuban black beans from Trader Joe's, because they add extra flavor.
