El Merengue in Newark serves up a straightforward slice of Dominican culture through its food and vibrant atmosphere. This spot feels equally at home as a casual restaurant during daytime hours and as a lively bar when the weekend crowds roll in. Located on Broadway, it draws locals looking for authentic Dominican flavors alongside the familiar background pulse of upbeat music.

The menu features classic Dominican staples like Carne Frita and Mofongo in several variations—grilled chicken breast, shrimp, or pork chicharrón—paired with typical sides such as tostones and fried plantains. Breakfast options are simple but aligned with local tastes, offering items like avena and fried cassava alongside coffee and tea. For those inclined toward something sweet, desserts like Bizcocho Dominicano and Tres Leches cake provide a familiar finish.

El Merengue particularly suits diners who appreciate authentic Dominican cooking without the frills—those who prioritize taste and cultural familiarity over polished presentation. The staff mainly speak Spanish, which reflects the neighborhood’s demographics, and while that can mean repeating orders occasionally, the service has a warm, informal feel. It’s clear that frequent visitors return for the food as well as the friendly, if occasionally lively, interactions behind the counter.

Evenings bring a noticeable shift in energy as the restaurant transitions into a bar with music and dancing, turning the space into a community gathering spot. This weekend vibe is especially appealing for younger crowds looking to combine dinner with nightlife. Locals mention the pernil and the casual bar setting as highlights, though the quality of certain side dishes like plantains may vary.

For those in Newark craving Dominican food reminiscent of New York City’s uptown classics, El Merengue offers a reliable alternative without venturing far. Whether stopping in for a relaxed lunch or staying late for drinks and music, visitors should expect an unpolished but genuine experience rooted in Dominican culinary traditions and a neighborhood vibe that shifts with the day.

I love the pernil! The rice is super fluffy but the sweet plantains are hit or miss. This spot turns into a night club on the weekends with nice music and dancing. The staff typically do not speak English but that's never been a problem for me.

Been To Merengue About 3 Times. Always A Good Spot To Catch Some Fresh Dominican Style Food. The Staff Is Friendly But When They Are Taking Care Of A Customer They Are Always Talking Amongs Themselves So You Might Just Have To Repeat Yourself More Than Once...But That Still Won't Keep Me From Not Going Again When I'm Back In NJ.

Oxtails and Long Island Ice Tea - The food and service was amazing. My only complaint is that you can't add the tip on your card if you're paying with one (and let's be honest here, how many of us carry cash anymore?)....only with CASH. I felt horrible because I had two AMAZING waitresses and couldn't tip because I didn't have cash and there was no ATM nearby. Other than that....great place.

Got a lot of food. Got some shredded Pork, fish and brown rice. Really good. I’d come back again. Place inside is huge. They got a bar and club looking place on other side. But came on a Sunday morning so it was closed.
