The history of International Lolita Fashion Day

Hi everyone! ILD is tomorrow (Saturday, June 6, 2026), and since it's been such a long time and I'm feeling nostalgic for ye olden days, I thought I'd give you a little history about its origin in 2005.

Back then, I (as kittyhot) proposed a silly idea: what if we had a "holiday" where we all dress up in lolita fashion for no reason other than to potentially run into each other on the same day?

It was not yet popular to wear lolita fashion on an everyday basis. People mostly wore it on weekends or to meetups, so ILD was meant as an "excuse" to wear lolita fashion "for no reason."

I was also trying to recreate what I thought was happening in Harajuku on the Meiji Bridge at the time. I knew that many gosurori gathered there on Sundays to just hang out, so I thought if we all dressed up and hung out at a mall or something, we'd accidentally find each other. I'm so glad y'all did not take my advice.

During its creation, jrocker_kei suggested that we make it a bi-annual holiday and have one day in summer and one day in winter to show off our seasonal coords. We decided on the first Saturday of June and the first Saturday of December.

I then created a Yahoo! Mailing List where I set up a photo album and automatic reminders for these days each year. Lots of people from the comm joined, but no one ever uploaded any photos, so I assumed the idea was dead and abandoned the mailing list. I was shocked to see that it had still survived on Facebook years later (I avoided joining Facebook for a long time.)

Over time, it became popular to host meetups for "loliday" or #ILD, and that's how we know it today. I'm glad the comm turned it into something much better than my original dorky idea.

But, in keeping with the original spirit, if you normally only wear Lolita fashion for special occasions or have yet to visit your first meetup, I encourage you to wear it on ILD even if you don't have a meetup to go to. It's supposed to be a day where you just wear it "for no reason"—other than your love for the fashion. (I'm oldschool and still support the weekend lolita. I will die on this hill.)

This is just meant to shed insight into the pupose of ILD as a whole, as well as its history. I'm proud that so many of us came together to make it happen, and I'm so happy that it ended up becoming a lasting part of the community!

My newest main piece both to me and chronologically is BTSSB's Kumya Floating Tea Party.

They did a restock early March and I love this shade of blue and the various pastel colors, I think will be fun to coord with ♡

My oldest piece is MTDF's Bridal OP from 2003.

I also have a blouse of theirs from this time but this was my ultimate dream dress so I'm taking the chance to show it off XP
The satin has a unique texture that I think shows up well on camera and the flocky pattern is so cool.

What are your newest/oldest pieces? I'd love to know!

Hello all! I'm Mignonette/Royalsealy (he/him). Recently I've found myself nostalgic for the more forum driven format of the early internet days (even though I was mostly on neoboards lol) and I thought I would give this a shot!

I'm mostly a sweet lolita with a growing love for old school. My favorite of the big brands is Metamorphose with Baby the Stars Shine Bright a close second with their old school releases.

I'm definitely putting off making an official website/blog type thing, but I'm most active on Tumblr, Lemon8, and Instagram. Occasionally I post YouTube videos (heres a link to my wardrobe video).

I'll do a quick Q&A thing to get this started:

Favorite drink (besides water): Chai lattes! But basically all tea

Favorite color: mint/seafoam green

Headdress or KC: Recently, headdresses!

JSK or OP?: Short sleeve OPs, I love ones that can be layered

Favorite band: Radkey

Currently reading: The final part of Lord of the Rings trilogy

Current Shows: Ted Lasso, Abbott Elementary, Naruto Shippuden, and slowly going through Doctor Who

Hobbies: Nature walks (especially for birds and bugs), Pottery, watching Formula 1 (LH, PG, and YT are my favorites!), and learning Japanese

Random: I'm in the process of growing bush green beans for the first time!

Outside of this I try to go to as many meets as I can as well as hosting from time to time.

I would love to see other intro posts or responses as well since I probably don't know many people here :)

The size limits on this website make it hard for me to have a nice post, the amount of storage for photos is very limited so I used a resizer. I also didn't really feel like doing one this year, so I left out a few things that I'm either selling on LM or just didn't want to photograph.

Arranged everything by color family, feel free to go through my older posts for detail shots or ask if you want info on something. I had to delete a lot of old photos to have space for new ones on the blog, sorry.

I should probably sell some more things but I love everything that I photographed. Just don't have a lot of closet space for anything new lol

Unreleased Items You Wish Were Released?

I was looking through some of my old (ouch) AP catalogs and in one of them from 2014 there was this marshmallow bag pictured with the re-release of magical etoile. I realized that I don't remember ever seeing this bag, and after looking through lolibrary and a couple google searches, I don't think AP ever released this bag?

In the caption, it's listed as a reference product, but that doesn't really tell us much because I've seen AP list their own DIY work, props that they clearly didn't make, items they haven't priced yet and items that are sold out all as "reference products".

So, I got really currious if this bag was made by AP and if it was... why didn't they release it?

And then I started wondering how many other things exist in the land of "never released"?
