to understanding how children learn mathematics by creating models that capture the many interacting factors influencing learning\u2014from cognitive processes and executive function skills (EFs) to students&#8217; home environments, family supports, and classroom experiences.<\/p>\n","project_description":"<p>The team explored a rich data set with longitudinal mathematics assessment data for more than 8,000 students in grades 4-8 and modeled the relationships between learners\u2019 internal cognitive processes, socio-emotional factors, and external contexts. Using this dataset, they conducted exploratory analyses to test approaches for representing learners within a multidimensional \u201ccontext space\u201d that reflects the interaction of these various factors. This work was complemented by qualitative interviews that explored how families, teachers, classrooms, and home environments impact executive functioning, social emotional development, and aspects of attitudes towards mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>Together, this work contributed early insights into how complex models that incorporate cultural, developmental, and societal contexts might be used to better In 13 studies with more than 700 participants, the MAT+EF assessments are shown to be efficient, accurate, reliable, and easy to administer. MAT+EF is practical for real-world classrooms and was used in a \\u003ca href=\\u0022https:\/\/osf.io\/weufg\/files\/atj53\\u0022\\u003elarge-scale evaluation of MathFluency+\\u003c\/a\\u003e with over 3,000 students across eight districts. MAT+EF is expanding access to measures of math and EF skills for all learners.\",\"_text_list_list_items_0_list_item_subheading\":\"field_text_list_text_list_list_items_list_item_subheading\",\"text_list_list_items_1_list_item_headline\":\"Innovative machine learning algorithms enable daily EF skill assessment through significant reduction in data demands\",\"_text_list_list_items_1_list_item_headline\":\"field_text_list_text_list_list_items_list_item_headline\",\"text_list_list_items_1_list_item_subheading\":\"Traditional EF skill assessments are too time-consuming for daily classroom use and often require that students be assessed outside of instruction. The MAT+EF assessment is enhanced by sophisticated machine learning algorithms that learn from each student's comprehensive baseline assessment and continuously update items based on student responses. The algorithm represents a significant advancement over existing models, as it enables the daily battery to be personalized using 70% less data than traditional models, while still maintaining accuracy.
