Ward [cost] means \u201cWhenever this permanent becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter that spell or ability unless that player pays [cost].\u201d<\/li><li><b>702.21b<\/b>\u00a0Some ward abilities include an X in their cost and state what X is equal to. This value is determined at the time the ability resolves, not locked in as the ability triggers.<\/li><li>\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If a player casts a spell that targets multiple permanents their opponent controls with Ward, each of those Ward abilities will trigger. If that player doesn&#8217;t pay for all of them, the spell will be countered.<\/li><li>If a spell or ability that can&#8217;t be countered targets one or more permanents with Ward, its controller may still choose to pay the Ward cost. with Ward\u00a0<span class=\"ie9\"><span class=\"explain\" title=\"3 Generic\"><span class=\"mw-default-size\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mw-file-element ls-is-cached lazyloaded\" hard to kill effectively, essentially getting semi-<a title=\"Hexproof\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Hexproof\">hexproof<\/a>. &#8220;Can&#8217;t be countered&#8221; is not a common side benefit on creature removal.<ul><li><a class=\"ext-scryfall-cardname\" href=\"https:\/\/scryfall.com\/search?q=%21%22Kappa+Cannoneer%22&amp;utm_source=mw_MTGWiki\" data-card-name=\"Kappa Cannoneer\">Kappa Cannoneer<\/a>&#8216;s breach into\u00a0<a title=\"Legacy\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Legacy\">Legacy<\/a>\u00a0was unintended.<\/li><li>Generally, it causes\u00a0<a title=\"Tempo\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Tempo\">tempo<\/a>\u00a0loss for one player; while it is clear how this would affect one-on-one matches, it proved to still be significant in multiplayer formats such as\u00a0<a title=\"Commander (format)\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Commander_(format)\">Commander<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ward really impacts the ability to spend multiple cards to kill off one thing.<ul><li>This especially affects\u00a0<a title=\"Red\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Red\">red<\/a>\u00a0players, which often rely on mana-efficient targeted damage spells.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ward is most fun in small doses.<ul><li>There was probably too much in sets like\u00a0<i><a title=\"Murders at Karlov Manor\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Murders_at_Karlov_Manor\">Murders at Karlov Manor<\/a><\/i>, which had the marquee mechanic of\u00a0<a title=\"Disguise\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/Disguise\">disguise<\/a>, that had Ward\u00a0<span class=\"ie9\"><span class=\"explain\" title=\"2 Generic\"><span class=\"mw-default-size\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mw-file-element ls-is-cached lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wikia.nocookie.net\/mtgsalvation_gamepedia\/images\/4\/4d\/2.svg\/revision\/latest\/scale-to-width-down\/15?cb=20160121091623\" alt=\"{2}\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" data-image-name=\"2.svg\" data-image-key=\"2.svg\" data-relevant=\"0\" text.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ward should be something used by\u00a0<a title=\"R&amp;D\" href=\"https:\/\/mtg.fandom.com\/wiki\/R%26D\">R&amp;D<\/a>\u00a0with intention.<\/li><li>Non-mana ward that people consistently can pay for has been pretty fun.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a554d71 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" is a great deterrant from spells, and if the opponents dare cast something against it will pay a toll in order to do so.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
