Let us imagine ourselves entering a geological museum for the first time, moving from one gallery to another with growing astonishment—now pausing before the beautifully polished marbles of Devonshire, enriched with delicate corals; now gazing at the remarkable fishes of the Old Red Sandstone, their enamelled plates still distinct; then admiring the fragile shells and ammonites of the Lias and Oolites, whose pearly sheen remains unimpaired; next the fresh, white shells from the Isle of Wight; and finally the massive bones and enormous teeth of ancient monsters drawn from the Wealden strata of Sussex. A natural question arises: how were all these beings preserved from decay and destruction, and sealed so securely that one can scarcely believe them to be as ancient as geologists assert? It is worth pausing to reflect on this problem before proceeding to describe the creatures themselves.
