- Elizabeth Smith

The 18th Zagreb International Wine and Culinary Festival (Zagreb VINOcom) returns to the iconic Esplanade Hotel on November 27, 2025, opening its doors at 11:00 a.m. Founded in 2006 by director Ivan Dropuljić, the festival has become a cherished tradition, held each year during the final weekend of November. This year’s edition will welcome visitors daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through Sunday, November 30. The price of a one-day ticket is €40 and will be available for purchase onsite.

Living the Tasty Life is a reader-funded publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a premium subscriber.

Zagreb VINOcom is fully devoted to celebrating exceptional food, wine, and artisanal products. As one of the region’s most important economic and tourism events leading into the festive season, the festival will gather more than 230 exhibitors, including international wine producers, distillers, and makers of prosciutto, cheese, olive oil, and other delicacies from Croatia, the European Union, and neighboring countries. Additional global offerings will be showcased through importers. Guests can look forward to an impressive promenade-style tasting of domestic and international wines, complemented by a series of intimate, reservation-only workshops available for a supplemental fee.

“This year, 2025, is especially significant — a festive jubilee for Zagreb’s prestigious Esplanade Hotel, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary and has earned numerous international accolades, placing it among the finest hotels in the world. Zagreb VINOcom is marking 18 years of successful organization and the advancement of fine wine and gastronomy. If it weren’t for COVID, we could already celebrate a full two decades,” said Prof. Ivan Dropuljić, festival founder and director. “Exhibiting at the festival is not only an excellent marketing opportunity, but also a matter of prestige. I am proud that the patronage of the festival has once again been accepted by the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, who recently welcomed me and my son Filip Dropuljić, head of marketing and promotion. My sincere thanks go to all our patrons — the President of the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce, the City of Zagreb — as well as to all sponsors and friends of the festival.”

A strong turnout is anticipated, including residents of Zagreb and wider Croatia, visitors from neighboring countries, distinguished public figures, business leaders, members of the media, and professionals and enthusiasts from the wine, food, and hospitality sectors.

Topic: Why is Champagne a wine for every occasion?

Thanks to the distributor Evino Adria, who is presenting its Champagne portfolio, we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the world of this fascinating wine, the regions and styles of production — growers and champagne houses, vintage and non-vintage, white or rosé, the philosophy of each producer, the freshness of the wines and their complexity, and the way of serving. We will prove once again that Champagne is a drink that can always be enjoyed because, as Coco Chanel used to say: “I only drink Champagne on two occasions — when I’m in love and when I’m not.”

VinoCOM 2024 with Radgonske Gorice Ciconia

Friday, November 28, 2024

11:00-12:30

Moderator: Daniel Čečavac, DipWSET, WA

Topic: Yves Cuilleron: Wine Virtuoso of the Northern Rhône

A journey through the Northern Rhone and its magnificent appellations with 10 wines from iconographic wine virtuoso Yves Cuilleron. After taking over the family vineyards in 1987, Yves has built a vineyard empire that today spans an impressive 100 hectares and seven appellations. With most of his vineyards located on famous granite terraces, Yves cultivates his vineyards organically and by hand, using a so-called “haute couture” approach with rigorous yield reduction. He is known for bottling small batches from a multitude of microlocations, and Wine Spectator magazine has named him the leader of the new generation of Condrieu winemakers. The Northern Rhône offers the most complex and long-lasting editions of Syrah and Viognier, and Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu are the appellations that confirm this.

Topic: Templar wines Description: The Association for Gastronomic Culture and Heritage

“Taste of Adriatic” has launched a unique project – Templar wine. The idea is to revive the Templar heritage on Croatian soil and connect it with our wine tradition. It is a project that combines history, faith and attachment to the land, people and region, which reflects tradition, honesty, top quality and an original product, linked to the historical presence of the Knights Templar, as well as Benedictine and Cistercian monks in the Istria and Kvarner regions, as well as the entire Croatia. Croatia is a country rich in Templar heritage in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar-Dalmatia and Continental-Slavonia regions, where there are still vineyards planted on the foundations of the Templar vineyards. Templar wine is a wine marked with the Templar stamp, which is awarded once a year to winemakers with top-quality wines from the areas of Templar and Benedictine heritage, who are recognized in society not only as excellent entrepreneurs but also as honorable and noble people.

Topic: Our 8 Favorites for a Desert Island

Description: For many years, Daniel and Roko have been tasting hundreds of labels and vintages of wines from around the world. Some repeat more often than others, and the reason for this lies in the energy, complexity and uniqueness of these individual samples. There are of course many more than this list below, but the protagonists of this tasting agreed that these eight favorites would be what they would like to have if they ever found themselves on a desert island. Why? Because these eight magnificent wines offer the essence of elegance, sophistication and happiness. France deservedly took half of the list, but the strong strengths of Tuscany, Santorini, Patagonia and Cape Town, perfectly intertwine with Burgundy, Champagne, Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. Discover why these wines deserve so much respect from Daniel and Roko.

Topic: Why did you macerate the Škrlet, it is so tender?

Description: At this tasting, you will be able to see why maceration suits Škrlet. How does Škrlet have the most polyphenols of all white autochthonous varieties? How does the Moslavina soil and maceration affect Škrlet? Winemaker Nikica Katić from Kleti Romić will try to explain all this through a vertical tasting of her macerated Škrlet. All macerated Škrlet are vinified without any additives or filtration, they are a pure reflection of the Moslavina soil and climate.
