In many university and polytechnic classes, students are in attendance and they write out what the lecturer says verbatim which by the end of the term still leaves them struggling come revision time. The issue is not usually a lack of effort but a lack of structure. Good note taking is not a matter of writing down everything that is said; it is about what you do with the info zeroing in on the key points and putting them in a structure that your brain will be able to go back to easily. When notes are well put together they become a private set of text books based on your own understanding which in turn makes revision faster and more effective which is so important during exams when time is tight and stress high.

Cornell and outline notes methods as well as mind mapping which also includes how to turn your hand written notes into digital formats for easy revision and storage. At the end you will have a full system which takes lectures and turns them into clear digital materials that stick in your memory for the long term.

In the course of your study do also try out structured visualization tools like revision planning which help you to connect topics and do better at preparing for exams.

The Cornell Note-Taking Method

A narrow left hand column for notes as you go through the lecture in detail, a wide right hand column for notes, and a separate bottom section for your summaries. As the lecture plays out you capture important examples and explanations in the right column, then go back and put into the left hand column related questions, concepts, or triggers which assist recall. Also the bottom section is for a brief 2-3 sentence summary of the page’s content, that leaves out the non-essentials but distills the main points.

What we see as the power of this method is how it plays to memory recall. We don’t just go over extensive notes passively, instead we test ourselves with the use of the cue column. In a bio class for instance you may put “cell division stages” in the left hand column and full notes in the right. At revision time you cover the right hand notes and try to fill in from the cue. This also causes deep thinking as you are putting info into your own words which in turn improves retention and understanding as you are not just recognizing info presented to you but are instead retrieving it. Also over time we see that students which use the Cornell method report their revision time becomes a lot more efficient and structured.

The Outline Note-Taking Method

The outline is a very simple at the same time very effective tool which puts lecture info into a hierarchical structure. We use indentation to indicate the relationship between main topics, subtopics and support details. Usually main headers are to the left, and sub points are indented under their related main header. This structure also mirrors the way professors present info which in turn makes it easy to follow the flow of ideas in class. Also it is very useful in subjects like history, economics, sociology and law which present material in layers of concept and complex connected arguments.

The outline method is a great tool for clear and logical presentation of information. We no longer have a jumble of sentences on the page, rather we have a systematic layout that at a glance conveys what is important and the relationships between ideas. For instance under a large topic like “Causes of Inflation” you may put out subtopics which are “demand pull inflation”, “cost push inflation” and “monetary factors” each with short notes below. Also this makes the revision process a piece of cake because your mind can easily go over structured material instead of trying to make sense out of a mess of paragraphs. Also it is a great help when you are to turn notes into essays or reports as your points are already in a logical sequence.

Mind-Mapping Methods for Better Understanding

Mind mapping is also a graphic note taking strategy which puts out info in a way the brain naturally does. We start in the middle of the page with the main topic and from there branch out into related sub topics, keywords and details. Also for subjects which have many relationships, processes or are very inter connected this is very useful as you are able to see the big picture at a glance. Also unlike linear notes which are in a straight line, mind maps go out in all directions which in turn encourages creativity, color coding, and spatial organization which in turn greatly improves memory and understanding.

A closer look at what mind mapping does reveals its great value in the processes of brainstorming and revision which in turn is due to the fact that it mirrors how the brain organizes association. For instance if you take the central topic of “Climate Change” you may put out branches for causes, effects, solutions, and case studies which in turn may have sub branches. This is to say that complex issues are made more manageable and memorable as you are not to recall isolated facts but rather sets of related ideas. Also it is noted that students who use mind maps report an ease in the revision process before exams which in large part is due to the fact that a full chapter may be summed up in a single page in a very visual and therefore easy to recall format.

Another benefit of mind mapping is that it’s a flexible tool. As you get new ideas during lectures you can add to the map which in turn doesn’t disrupt the structure of what you have. This makes it great for fast paced classes which see info constantly added. Also it works well for group study sessions because different students can add their areas of knowledge to the same map. Over time what you develop into is a powerful revision tool which in turn reduces the need to re-read large textbooks.

Converting Handwritten Notes to Digital Summaries

In the present day academic setting we see that students put together hand written notes with digital tools does in fact greatly improve study efficiency. Many students still do prefer writing out notes during lectures as it improves focus and comprehension but what they end up with is disorganized notes which also are a pain to carry around. That issue is resolved by turning them into digital notes which in turn make your notes searchable, editable and accessible across devices. This process doesn’t require very complex tools at all, even simple programs like Google Docs, Notion, or Microsoft OneNote will help you to take that which is physical and turn it into a more organized digital format that also is a better platform for revision and update.

First you review your hand written material which you then organize into categories and subcategories by topic. After that type out the main points in your own words which in turn improves the understanding and memory retention as you are not just copying. Also include diagrams, bullet points and highlights which will bring to fore the important concepts. Once your notes are digitized they become easy to revise, you are able to search for certain words, reorganize parts and even combine several lectures into one study guide for exams.

Another benefit of digital summaries is that which of them go missing or wear out they are also easy to access via your phone, laptop, or tablet. Thus you may be studying at your desk, on the train, or in the hallways between lectures. Also over time what begins as a collection of digital notes for each of your classes may turn into a full personal library which as you attend more classes and do more research becomes more in depth and structured.

Building a Personal Revision System

Taking the time to take great notes is just the first step; in terms of academic success what you do with those notes is what really pays off. What I mean is that a strong note revision system is one which you regularly return to, you which you condense into even more manageable bits of info and which you test yourself on without access to the original material. Also try the spaced repetition method which is to review your notes the day after you take them, then again in 3 days, then in a week and gradually lengthen the intervals. This does a great job of moving info from short term to long term memory. Also when you combine that with organized note taking systems like the Cornell method, outline form, or mind maps which present info in an easy to recall structure your revision becomes a lot more efficient.

Another key strategy is active recall in which you present yourself with questions on the material instead that your notes do not. For example you may go over the notes in a presentation format, get up to a board and present what you think is what the material said or write notes on a clean page. Also, it causes you to better organize your knowledge which in turn brings to light concepts you did not know well enough. We also find when study groups use active recall in combination with the best point form notes they also have a more in depth analysis on subjects rather than just for exam purposes. Over time this will see to it that the student feels better about their academic skills at a greater rate also we’ll see they will break from last minute cram sessions.

Conclusion

Effective note taking for lectures is not a matter of writing out more, but of writing out better. You may choose between the structured Cornell method, the logical outline approach, or the visual mind mapping which each in their own way help you to process and present info in a way that improves memory and understanding. Also by turning your hand written notes into digital sums you create a flexible and powerful study system which goes beyond devices and subjects.

The key is consistency of using these methods regularly until they are a part of your learning routine. With the right note taking approach lectures which once were overwhelming begin to break down into clear, organized presentations which are also easy to go back to and revise, thus giving you a strong hand in doing well in exams and in all aspects of academic performance.

Introduction Taking note taking is a skill that may seem easy at first glance but in fact is very powerful when done right.
