\ninformatics is the study of resources and methods for the management of health
\ninformation. This area of study supports <\/span>health information technology<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span>,
\nmedical practice, medical research and medical informatics. To that end, health
\ninformatics involves systems such as <\/span>electronic health records<\/span><\/span>
\n(EHR) and <\/span>electronic medical records<\/span><\/span>
\n(EMR), <\/span>health information exchange<\/span><\/span>
\nstandards such as <\/span>Health Level 7<\/span><\/span> (HL7).<\/span><\/div>\n

\nHealth
\ninformatics technology includes the electronics and information technology used
\nduring the course of patient care, a practice also known as clinical
\ninformatics. The definition of the clinical informatics specialty, formed in
\npart by the <\/span>American Medical Informatics Association<\/span><\/span>
\n(AMIA), describes it as the implementation and evaluation of communication
\nsystems that improve patients’ health and care, as well as the relationship between
\npatients and their physicians.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nNursing
\ninformatics is a subset of health informatics that encompasses nurses’
\ninteractions with healthcare technology systems. It’s a field that will take on
\nincreased importance as more facilities put their patient records online and
\nentrust their nursing teams to handle transition-of-care situations in their
\nEHRs. Nursing informatics specialists are a group who will be depended on to
\naccurately document transitions of care whether a patient is going from an
\nambulatory setting to a hospital setting or from a hospital to a rehabilitation
\ncenter<\/span><\/div>\n

\nIn
\nmany organizations, the <\/span>chief medical information officer<\/span><\/span>
\n(CMIO) can overlap with those of a CMIO role is typically more targeted than
\nthe CMIO.  <\/span>The duties of a chief nursing
\ninformatics officer (CNIO) can overlap with those of a CMIO. The CNIO role is
\ntypically more targeted than the CMIO role at evaluating products and
\ndeveloping a workflow.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nThe
\nfirst use of health informatics occurred in the 1950s with dental data
\ncollected by the National Bureau of Standards, now known as the <\/span>National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/span><\/span>
\n(NIST). Usage accelerated in subsequent decades following the development of
\nthe Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi-Programming System, which
\nprovided a standard programming language for clinical applications. Today, the
\nInternational Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) oversees member
