Announcing the Future of AI at the University: From DSAI to the AI Hub

The Data Science and AI (DSAI) Hub is evolving. To better serve our community and reflect the rapidly expanding landscape of machine learning and intelligence, DSAI is transitioning into the comprehensive AI Hub.

A Centralized Engine for Leadership

The AI Hub will serve as the University’s central engine for AI leadership—aligning education, research, operations, and external partnerships under a cohesive strategy. As part of this growth, we are centralizing our digital footprint to provide a unified resource for students, faculty, and researchers.

Moving forward, we are:

Adopting ai.umn.edu: We are integrating the content and mission of ai.umn.edu into our core operations to ensure a single, authoritative source for AI strategy.
Unifying Campus Resources: The AI Hub will serve as the primary connector for AI initiatives and research across all campuses.
Expanding Our Scope: We are growing beyond data science to represent the full spectrum of AI, from foundational ethics to cutting-edge technical applications.

Strategic Vision & Leadership

Under the leadership of our new Vice Provost, Dr. Galin Jones, we are formalizing a coordinated strategy designed to amplify our existing strengths. This transition is the result of over a year of planning by the President’s AI Task Force to ensure our approach is defined by intentionality, accountability, and trust.

Our expanded mission includes:

Literacy & Governance: Expanding AI literacy efforts for students, faculty, and staff.
Statewide Impact: Driving AI efforts that benefit learners at every stage—from Pre-K–12 to professionals in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, and advanced materials.
Economic Partnerships: Strengthening ties with policymakers and industry leaders across Minnesota to position the state for long-term leadership.

Through training, guidance, funding, and hands-on programs, we support learning, research, and real-world applications across key focus areas—including foundational data science, digital health, education, creative AI, and responsible AI practices. Undergraduate & graduate students gaining hands-on experience through workshops, competitions, mentorship, and the AI Makerspace.
K–12 educators and students building AI literacy through learning experiences and professional development.
Industry and community partners exploring applied projects and workforce development with University expertise.

Our programs bring people together to learn, experiment, and innovate. This includes the workshops, webinars, conferences, seed grants, and community networking events. We also connect the University community to Navigating AI page, a campus-wide resource for responsible and effective AI use.

Each year, the Hub engages hundreds of learners and partners across Minnesota, the nation, and the world. Our work strengthens the AI ecosystem, supports interdisciplinary research, and expands access to emerging technologies.
