We're officially putting the Contest on hiatus for the time being. ~~It's not our intention to close the community, but we're going on a hiatus while we decide on a course of action to pursue regarding the timing of challenges.~~ When we come to a decision, we'll let everyone know.

As we are still tied for favorite AU verse, I think we ought to call this one a draw! :)

FAVORITE AU VERSE: The Zombie Verse IN A TIE! by kalijean

AND

"Great! Just great!" Ray Vecchio was jamming a rag into a bottle of Scotch. There was a good ten things wrong with that fact alone, and God only knew where Welsh had been keeping that in the precinct. "I'm on my way to a perfectly good bust, wheelin', dealin', working my gangster street cred. Good day, right? What could possibly go wrong? Oh, of course! The guy's got a hole in his shoe and God drops a clueless Dudley Do-Right clone on me just to follow it up with a stiff zombie chaser!"

He flicked Gardino's zippo - the poor guy wasn't gonna need it - and the rag went up in a satisfying whoosh. Ray lobbed the molotov through the now-gaping hole in the doors, ducking behind the overturned tables just to breathe.

The backdraft was swift.

"Detective, it isn't as though I brought these... creatures with me. The word zombie is hardly sensitive, they're likely simply infected with--"

"--they're rotted, groaning, going for the neck and that last one was missing most of its face. They're zombies, Fraser! Do your polite Canadian thing all you want. Go ahead, ask 'em if they need a ride to the hospital. What d'you think'll happen? 'Take two bullets and call me in the morning?!' They wanna eat my brain and I'm tellin' you as a man with finely-honed dress sense that blood and guts just don't go with Armani!"

"I suppose I should concede your point."

"...ya think?!"

"There really is no call to be snippy, Ray."

"Yes, Fraser, there is! I'm livin' a scene out of Thriller, that door's gonna give any second, you apparently haven't heard of bullets, and I've got nothing left to light on fire unless photocopier toner is flammable! If there's ever a time to be snippy, it's now!"

"There's never-- Oh, dear."

Yeah, really. The door gave with the crash of falling furniture and what Ray could hear was the heave of bodies. It was a Hell of a noise.

Ray shut his eyes for an instant and sighed.

"I don't give a crap about legal, Fraser, take it," he said, tossing him Huey's gun. Another guy that wasn't gonna need it. Too many of those now.

No time to check to see if the guy took it. Ray was on his feet before the throw was complete, leveling his own gun on-- Jesus Christ the damn things were on fire and still busting through the remains of that barricade.

One way out, unless you counted heading downstairs. Because nobody with the brains these things wanted would've taken shelter in the morgue, it was through those doors.

How many bullets between them? How many infected? Too little, too many. Ray became aware of Fraser beside him, finally giving up on that legal crap. They hopped the table in near-tandem.

Ray took aim at the nearest zombie and fired.

So our challenge is up, everyone, and it's time to vote on our favorite alternate universe!

ONE: The Zombie Verse

AND

TWO: The Rubber Duckie Verse

"Maintain the clean," was what they always said in the factory. And of course, Benton kept mind of his primary duties -- to maintain order during bath time and keep sentry over the bathroom at other times. He took his duties seriously.

That, perhaps, in addition to his other eccentricities, had created a rift between him and his compatriots. After one too many reminders about the rubber duckie regulations, he'd found himself in the large crate in the back of a truck headed southward and that was how he ended up in a tiny bathroom in a Chicago apartment.

He was a cardinal red rubber duckie. It wasn't the usual way for rubber ducks but owing to a rare manufacturing error involving copious amounts of Red-264, that was the way he was. He stood watch on a ledge under the vanity over the toothbrush named Ray and a comb (also named Ray) sat on the sink basin. They were noisy and messy and, in the depths of his squeaker, he might grudgingly admit that they were the best friends (possibly only friends) he'd ever had.

It turned out that he actually liked it in Chicago.

THREE: The Prince Charming Verse

Ray Vecchio held a short glass of brandy as suitors, from all over, gathered to flirt and work their way into his heart and hopefully his pockets. Ray was a prince, and he knew he wasn’t the belle of the bell, but he also knew that he wanted more than someone that only wanted him for his money.

That was why Ray was trying to hide from the many suitors that flocked the pristine white ballroom of his palace. He was supposed to be finding a proper spouse for himself, but the flouncy, flamboyant men that responded to his advertisement were his suitors were annoyingly self-centered and in it for Ray’s money.

He kept an eye on the great silver carpeted staircase. It was a ‘just in case’ precaution. If either of his parents came down, he would make a hurried conversation with the nearest suitor.
Downing his drink, Ray reached out to replace his empty glass with a new one from a passing waiter’s tray. Glancing around the room, he got distracted from his careful watch of the stairs by the great feathered hat that, Ray was sure, was taller and wider than the man that wore it. Large Hat Man was making his way up to Ray.

Blinking dazedly at the large hat, Ray completely missed his introduction and the announcement of a new person entering the ballroom.

Ray tried to focus on the man in front and only caught the brief nod to the left before Large Hat headed off in another direction. Apparently not very determined to win his heart, Ray shrugged and turned his attention to the newcomer whose introduction he had not caught.

“Hello, I thought that I should introduce myself. I am Benton Fraser, and I am here to attempt to win your heart, though I do seem to be late, I apologize for that. I must have misread the flyer.” A smiling Benton Fraser held his hand out to shake.

Ray knew that Benton Fraser would be the man he would marry.

Hi, everyone! It's been a long time, and my apologies for that. Thanks to everyone who participated in the last challenge. The poll will be closing over the weekend and banners will be posted by murderdetective! Now, on to the show!

This week, our challenge is for alternate universes.

Rules:
* Entries may be drabbles, icons or art, within the following size limits.
* Fanfiction drabbles must be no more than 500 words. Art must be no larger than 500 by 500. Icons should be LJ standard, as in 100 by 100 and no larger than 40 KB.
* You may submit five total using a mix of mediums or whichever appeals to you the must!
* The entries must clearly represent an alternate universe, as in a drabble with Fraser as a secretary or an art manip with Ray K in a football jersey.
* Please wait until winners are announced to post your entries!
