His book, <em>Walden or Life in the Woods,<\/em> has been studied by millions.\u00a0 Almost two centuries later, Walden continues to be a valuable guide for simple living and finding harmony with nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But Thoreau also believed in individual freedom and limited government. On freedom, Thoreau said,<em> \u201cLet him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.\u201d <\/em>Regarding the power of the state, he wrote, <em>\u201cThat government is best which governs least.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">As for environmental laws, they have always existed. Tribal societies had rules that restricted fishing and hunting during breeding seasons.\u00a0 And ancient Rome had laws that prohibited dumping waste near water sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">In 2025, however, there are so many environmental laws in Canada\u2014federal, provincial and municipal\u2014that no one knows the exact number.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Today&#8217;s stack of environmental laws started growing in the 1960s. The stack of environmental laws has grown very fast, particularly in the last decade.\u00a0 And Western governments like Canada&#8217;s have become more eager to regulate individual lives and households.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">There are many examples.\u00a0Climate laws tell us what kind of car to buy. Governments now mandate, and ever micro-manage, how we discard our trash.\u00a0Laws forbid private businesses from giving out plastic bags, forks and straws. Climate laws control housing construction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">Governments decree that \u201cfossil\u201d fuel is bad electricity, but wind and solar are good.\u00a0And all levels of government throw taxpayer dollars at one climate experiment after another\u2014electric fire trucks, battery factories, multi-million dollar bike paths, and almost any new idea that claims it will help the climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">Moreover, there are crowds of activists wanting government to go even further: banning gas stoves, creating car-free zones, and mandating people to live in \u201c15-minute\u201d zones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">And still it goes on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A recent CBC\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/science\/climate-choices-dog-planes-1.7608247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0proposes that owning a dog, eating meat, and flying on an airplane harm the planet. The\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/chapter-sixteen-the-communism-behind-environmentalism-part-ii-2786362?utm_campaign=socialshare_email&amp;utm_source=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">Carbon Sense Coalition<\/a>\u00a0says we should ban bottled water and vacations by car. And NBC ran a\u00a0story called\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/science-proves-kids-are-bad-earth-morality-suggests-we-stop-ncna820781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">\u201cScience proves kids are bad for Earth.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some other force is at play.\u00a0One\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.massdailynews.com\/2025\/08\/06\/bostons-climate-crackdown-mayor-wus-green-plan-slash-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">editorial<\/a>\u00a0says, \u201cThis isn&#8217;t about saving the planet.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about reshaping your lifestyle, one mandate at a time.\u201d Author Brian Sussman&#8217;s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Eco-Tyranny-Lefts-Agenda-Dismantle-America\/dp\/1936488507\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">book<\/a>\u00a0goes even further and labels much of it\u00a0 \u201cEco-Tyranny.\u201d And\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/article\/chapter-sixteen-the-communism-behind-environmentalism-part-ii-2786362?utm_campaign=socialshare_email&amp;utm_source=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">an editorial<\/a>\u00a0in the Epoch Times claims there is a dark spectre at work, stating, \u201cCommunism has latched onto environmentalism to create a large-scale panic, advocate a warped sense of values, deprive people of their freedom, attempt to expand government, and even impose a world government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">Whatever it is, the US government is now making U-turns and cutting back on environmental laws. Americans, or certainly a lot of them, have simply had enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In January, President Trump signed an executive order reversing former President Biden&#8217;s laws about electric vehicles.\u00a0Trump\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kbb.com\/car-news\/what-trumps-executive-orders-mean-for-car-shoppers-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">says<\/a>\u00a0that his administration would \u201celiminate the electric vehicle (EV) mandate and promote true consumer choice.\u201d\u00a0In September, Trump announced a similar about-face on renewable energy. Trump&#8217;s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/21\/business\/trump-vows-federal-ban-on-wind-solar-projects-as-energy-bills-soar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">message<\/a>\u00a0on social media was blunt: \u201cWe will not approve wind or farmer-destroying solar.\u00a0 The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Furthermore, Trump&#8217;s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) director, Lee Zeldin,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/12\/nx-s1-5326354\/trump-epa-environmental-rules-rollback-deregulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0cuts to 31 areas of environmental regulations, saying,\u00a0<em>\u201cWe are driving a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion to drive down cost of living for American families, unleash American energy, bring auto jobs back to the U.S. and more.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For some Canadians, these American announcements are hard to believe. Prime Minister Carney has, in the past,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/article\/mark-carney-hails-greta-thunberg-DWz5mn_2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">praised Greta Thumberg<\/a>\u00a0saying, <em>\u201cI am part of her movement.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> But the US reversal on environmental laws makes it hard for Canada&#8217;s government to be friendly with many of today\u2019s eco-defenders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">What&#8217;s next for Canadians?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">Fifty years ago, Canada followed the US policy that expanded environmental laws.\u00a0In the coming months we will see whether or not Canada follows the US initiatives in cutting them back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\" data-i-color=\"hard\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Gerald Heinrichs is a lawyer in Regina, Saskatchewan.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Gerald Heinrichs One of the greatest environmentalists was Henry David Thoreau.
