Five minutes and one secret post read later, I remember no, they do. People really do think it's that serious. Which is great! I'll be honest in that I miss having that kind of fannish passion, but I guess that's why I'm doing this instead. Shipping probably was my favorite fandom activity, lol. Shame it's so looked down upon.

I should be getting back to school work, but I'm hoping my next shipper will be the BNF! Unlike the other two so far, I haven't quite committed to her looks just yet. In particular I'm still debating in my head if she should have more of a glamorous celebrity or roman goddess look. There will be a forum though... or something forum like I guess.

Puns, I love puns!

Hopefully a start to my shipper project, which unfortunately, I realized might take more time to finish than I originally anticipated. I might have to postpone heavy duty work until summer, but for now I can at least conceptualize and world build.

The hardest part for me so far is that I'm not sure where it's going. Real life fandom is essentially an eternal sandbox, so long as you've got the fans to power it! Aside from the Shipper Manual, I'm actually liking the idea enough to want to do some kind of comic with it... but what would our heroines do? Besides running around with boxes and dodging flames?

I was thinking since most people tend to get into shipping during their teenage years, it could probably turn into a coming of age story. Something about how fandom is for escaping, but you've got to return to real life and it's about balance between reality and fantasy. Responsibility and fun. Something like that.

More shippers to come, hopefully! Of course, since the target audience would be shippers, I'd have to find a way to work man slash in there somewhere. Even though it's practically a female world, hm...

I would love to turn these gals into postcards.

For a semi-change of pace and the fact that I can't get over how awesome Assassin's Creed 2: Brotherhood is... is f-ing awesome, okay?

Just great, just totally great. It takes all the cool parts of Assassin's Creed and then makes them cooler. Like, oh, you couldn't ride horses in the cities before, well now you can! Or you couldn't carry around those nice battle axes the guards always got to use, well now you can! And now the side missions are actually more tied into the main plot so it's more worthwhile to complete them than before. And you can command an army of little assassin's! (I like to call them chickadees).

And it takes place in Rome during the Italian Renaissance, so you can do things like climb the Colosseum. The Colosseum, guys! And you're friends with Leonardo still, yay! And there's this scene with Leonardo, that's hilarious, but also spoilery, so beware.

And there's a multiplayer now, though I have yet to take advantage of that. Back at school, my roomies and I had a plan to play multiplayer together. Which is gonna be awesome... soon as I get the PS network thing to work.

And it's got another crazy twist ending, even more crazy than the last one I think. Like wow, why did that happen? I'm sure nobody's got any idea! Soooooo excited for Assassin's Creed 3 next year!

Though to be honest, despite all the awesome free-roaming Rome action, I can't say I could recommend this game to people who haven't played Assassin's Creed 2. It's kind of completely necessary in order to fully appreciate the AC:Brotherhood experience. But that is also a great game :D Go, go play it if you like games with killing and art history.

Next up is Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. The original Golden Sun games were some of my first video games, and woah did they set a high bar. Up until now, I can definitely say they were some of my favorite RPGs. Great story, awesome graphics, and superb music, all on such a tiny little platform. So... while it pains me to say this, so far Dark Dawn hasn't been impressing me nearly as much D:

Granted, I'm only two hours in, but in the first game by that time you've already finished your tragic backstory of missing parents, explored a secret chamber in an ancient temple, and almost accidentally set off an entire volcano. Right now in Dark Dawn I've beat up some wooden boxes and am now hanging out with some lumberjacks :\ Not quite the same level of exciting...

Maybe it's partially sour grapes that Felix is like... no where to be seen. The game mentions how as soon as they were done saving the world, Felix left on a trip and was never seen again in the thirty years that passed. What the hell?! I thought he wasn't suppose to leave Jenna alone again D:< What a douche... although, he did do that before, but it was only for like five years.

I'm actually a lot more fond of the second game's battle team than the first, and from what I've gathered so far it seems like they're mostly excluded from this sequel ): I want my Felix, Piers, and Sheba descendants! I mean, it was totally Felix and his party that went about saving the world the right way in the second game, and then the first party just shows up and takes all the credit :\ I did not enjoy that.

Well, I think I'll still give it another go before I ultimately make my decision >.< But still! Felix! D: The sadness!

I might need help with this shipping thing

Well, it's occurred to me since I've really been more of a lurker for most of my internet career I actually lack a lot of the stereotypical shipper experiences. Which makes my whole Shipper Handbook project a lot more difficult. This isn't really a project I'd be working on that much until December, but I thought it'd be really helpful if I could hear what other people's fangirl/shipper experiences and observations of others have been like with their times in fandom.

Some things I've been wondering off the top of my head perhaps, hrm...

What are shipping wars actually like? I've never actually seen one at all, especially ones that have broken into "civil wars" and require "treaties" though TVTropes tell me these have happened.
Personally, I think it'd be more fun to focus that energy on finding fellow shippers of similar ships! What's that like anyway? Having lots of shippers with the same ship in one place and fitting in and getting all excited? ... I wish I knew what this was like xD; Or, used to anyway.
Are most people OTP types, where they only have one pairing, or is it more common for people to have multiple ships?
Have you ever thought about finding a friend and cosplaying together as the ship? (Honestly, unless the two were dating in real life, I don't see how this couldn't be at least remotely awkward).
What do you think the ultimate goal for a shipper is? Or what is your ultimate goal, or is there any ultimate goal to be had at all? Would it be for the ship to become canon? To prove the rival ship false with canon? For the fangirl to become a BNF? A promoted fan? To simply convert others to the ship? Or simply to have fun?

Granted, I know half of my flist aren't shippers anyway, hrm... I should probably post about this on DA as well. Oh, I also wanted to share this pic I found while traveling TVTropes during my research. I need to be careful not to have too much fun with this, it's so much fun coming up with puns. My (relatively) new blog, over on blogspot, will be where I'll be chronicling the tales of what's been stressing me out so much, aka my attempts at being artsy professional. At the time being it'll mostly revolve around my senior film, "Warrior Cock", and whatever other art related posts I might want to make. Don't worry, I am on the hunt for a better title, but I'm afraid my love of puns makes this one rather appealing to me... Innuendo is something that tends to rub people the wrong way though, and ideally I'd hope to avoid that.

There's not much on the blog now, but I'll hopefully have more and more to post as I get further along this project...

I'm feeling like my days on LJ are numbered, since I no longer talk about the things I used to talk about that drew most of my flist to me in the first place. *cough* fandom *cough* And in the past, whenever I start a new blog I tend to abandon another.

Oh, I will put up an extensive post about AWA eventually. Documenting con trips helps me evaluate my progress as an amateur entrepreneur. *nodnod*

There's this meme that's been going around Deviantart for the last couple of weeks where you put together a collage of any of your major influences. I decided to focus mine on my "style", since it was something I've been thinking about a lot lately and I can definitely point out when I saw certain things in my life time that you can later see me emulating >o> The way it works is that the bigger the influence, the bigger the pic! Here we go!

Wee, and look who's got the biggest spot? :D Yup, I've already explained most of my influences on the original page, but I thought I could ramble a little more here. From the top we've got Bruce Timm, Clamp, Pokemon, Craig McCracken, Yugioh, Ohkami Mineko, burlesque and smexiness, Coraline, webcomics, Chinese culture, Shoomlah/Neopets, and Jhonen Vazquez.

So I was looking at this and thinking, "wow it's no wonder that I lean more towards graphics than naturalism." I was also thinking, "interesting how I don't have many background inspirations... maybe that's part of the reason I have difficulty with them." I then also thought, "look at my complete lack of indie cred! Whatever that means." I also just realized I have a tendency to admire fast artists!

So I'm still playing around with my cintiq, getting the hang of it, so I took a break from con stuff (when will I actually start working?) and worked on some gift art that I had promised for dybji a while ago! Ta-da! The end result was meant to be icons, but I thought it'd be fun to post up the full pics online.

The requests were tap-dancing Kaistern, overworked Alfeegi, and something coffee related with Ruwalk that I think I had gotten wrong, but barbistas are hilarious! The last one was a wildcard, and of course since there was going to be a set of four, had to include Tetheus somehow! Kaistern's definitely my favorite though, of this set.

Anyway, back to work on some badges, hopefully these will be the last ones.

Wow, I wasn't actually expecting for onemanga and other scanlation sites to be taken down so quickly, hrm... I'm not really too mad about it, because it was illegal to begin with, but now I'm more like "well, that makes it even harder for me to be in the loop with anime now."

What I didn't realize (but I'm not sure if this is true, since I only heard it from my sister) was that apparently while scanlators themselves weren't making any money from scanlating and it was all more a labor of love, the scanlation hosting websites were making lots of money from advertisements simply from the huge volumes of traffic... which, isn't so okay. It's becoming harder not to see this from the publishing houses' point of view, really.

At the same time though, I can't really imagine what sort of effect this is going to have on the anime community. Maybe a big one, maybe none at all, hrm... I don't know! xD;; I do feel like... this might be a too little too late sort of solution on the part of the publishers though. Because lots of fans are used to getting their stuff for free now, and they may feel bitter and angry that they can't have it that way anymore. And come on, would the hype for anime be nearly as huge if it weren't available for free on the net?

So I don't know, I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not sure if this move would necessarily help the publishing houses' falling sales. But we'll just have to wait and see. Maybe not everybody is as cheap as I think they are.

Well, at any rate, I'll no longer be able to keep up with Bleach and Naruto.... yes, I do read mainstream series, is that so bad? I also kept up with Soul Eater, D. Gray-Man, and... I think that's it. I used to read Skip Beat and Ouran High School, but the scanlation teams had such bad clean up staff that I couldn't stand looking at the pages after a while xD;; Oops.

Natsucon Recap

Woah, so that was very nice again xD I think I'm remembering why anime cons were always so appealing back in the day. Well, this is going to be more of an abridged recap, since a lot had happened and I'm uber tired. But to start with, this was an adventure with me, my sister, a few of my sister's friends, and my bff, dybji ! Dybji was my first table monkey ever xD But yes, this also marked the anniversary of my first Artist Alley, and I'll have to say it went pretty well.

It was pretty awesome being in what was almost a caravan, three tables all lined up in a row full of old friends (kinda). And I don't mean to brag, but I'll have to say, we were probably the most kick ass of all the tables there xD It was a small convention, but in all the good kinds of ways. Small enough so that the competition wasn't crazy tough (though, a considerate improvement from last year) but also busy enough so that we all had pretty good business. Luckily, I have managed to once again beat the revenue of my last convention. Hopefully, this can keep going up and up until I finally make some decent net profit.

This would also mark the first con where I made a significant amount of money after deducting only the badge/travel costs! 'cause it was only a twenty minute drive from my house! Though, if you really want to count all the supplies... it's probably more modest xD;;

Anyway, another thing that made this con exciting was that I was debuting two new kinds of merchandise, buttons and badges. I was a bit nervous about both, especially the latter, but both ended up selling fairly well, all things considered. Key chains were still the top contender, which was a problem, because I was hoping to retire them soon xD;

A row of badges, ready for pickup! The Shipper badges were pretty popular along with the Gamer Girl badges. I plan on making more for the next con I go too, since people seemed really interested in them! The trick seems to be identifying which ideas people would be proud to represent themselves with. Hence, why Shipper might have done well, but Rabid Fangirl is for those truly confident in their fandom obsessions enough to make fun of themselves for it. (Actually, I did have one male customer buy one! Woah!)

This also was the dawn of a new type of commission, button commissions!

The button commissions ended up being the most popular of all my commission types, but unfortunately since I priced it rather low, it didn't make the most profit. Still this ended up being loads of fun when a group of the most awesome Yugioh cosplayers came by and commissioned their characters! xD Like seriously, this was one of the top five moments of the convention! Later one of their friends came by to commission the same characters so I did them as a party themed set xD

I'm definitely considering doing more custom buttons in the future, but perhaps I'd raise the prices... I'm not sure! Strangely enough, they're still a little hard to make due to the small size. As you can see in the photos I still had lots of cropping issues. But I do looooooooove buttons though! They're the first type of merchandise that I've made that I like.... really, really, really love, hee!

But yes, there was also this really weird moment where I ran into some old friends from high school! None of us had any idea that the others were going xD so that was fun! I also got to semi-meet Tracy B, the artist of the popular web comic Lackadaisy, and bought a signed copy of her book. I went to her panel the night before so when I visited her table she remembered me!!! Awwwww... she's so awesome.

Lots of other things happened, but once again I spent most of the convention behind the table, so I didn't see much of the events, aww... In particular, this is the first time in maybe two years that I missed the costume contest of an anime con, le gasp!

Well, I'll tell more tales later probably, night for now!

Button, button, button, buttons

So like, I discovered that I really love making button designs. For every finished design I've got so far I've got like three other reject designs, le gasp! In particular, I really like taking little Asian icons from Chinese and Japanese culture and fitting them into a little circle. I could easily make hundreds of Asian designs, but alas not everyone is into Asia so time to put eggs into other baskets!

Aren't they pretty? I'll be selling them at Natsucon for one dollar each, and then six for five dollars. Hopefully, that'll encourage people to buy more. I'm a little worried about how they'll fare next to fanart buttons that'll have just the head of a popular character (totally lame in my opinion), but I'm tired of copyright infringement! So there.

Eeveelutions

Mkay, these are definitely the last Pokemon thing I'm going to do for a while! Whew, I love Pokemon, but I've just spent nearly a whole month drawing them xD; I still got a lot of Pokemon ideas too, but for next year. Time to go invest time in other merchandise! An observant eye may notice that I skipped Eevee. (It was a lot of work as it was and I'm sure it'd be even harder to try and squeeze another Pokemon into that space!) A more observant eye might notice that I basically took the Eeveelution designs and molded them around my chibi dragon template. It's been a long time since I've drawn chibi dragons, but I do love the body design I ended up with after years of drawing them. So, I like to sneak opportunities where I can use it xD; It works best for non-human bipeds though.

... You'd think that after my three-cons-in-a-row run back in March/April I'd realize that having less than a month turnaround between cons is a bad, bad idea.

Oh well! Better luck next year xD;;

Natsucon is a local, small con we've got in St. Louis, and it's happening July 16-18th. I'm planning on having a full table there, full of wares, along with my sister, some of her friends, and my best buddy. The main trouble is, since I spent the beginning of summer so far focusing on Anthro Con, I find myself rushing to make stuff for this anime convention! To the point where... I hardly care anymore, lol.

Well kinda. There's sort of this well known thing among Artist Alley vets that if you want to make sales, you have to make fanart, and it better be fanart that appeals to the masses. Naturally, this causes a bit of a grey area with copyright infringement... and I'm kind of tired of abusing other people's characters just so I can barely make a buck, gah. It's also a huge gamble with fanart anyway, because you don't know what sort of fans are going to be at the convention.

It also doesn't help that I happen to not be into any of the mainstream things, so if I attempted to make fanart "for the money" I'd have to force myself to draw things I don't even really care about and... I think it is obvious when I do that. I also feel incredibly uncomfortable with it... so, this has lead to me abandoning my original plan of drawing tons of characters, and instead sticking to a few I like. Over the weekend and today, I finished a set of eeveelutions, my favorite Batman characters, and Lady Gaga.

Currently, if I recycle some old designs I made last year, I have Pokemon, Batman, Lady Gaga, Hetalia, Dragon Knights, D. Gray-Man, and Persona 4 represented... It's... very obvious I haven't been in touch with "anime world" for a while, isn't it? It's so mismatched >_>

Oh well, after making a couple of Assassin Creed II related merch, I hope to focus on original work for the remaining time. They'd mostly be original trinkets though, in the form of buttons and badges!

I'm... worried about not breaking even, again! >o> As always! I did okay at Anthro Con, but this is different, this is an anime convention! And, I don't really think my style appeals to the anime crowd as much? It seems that beautiful, elegant shoujo style is what fares the best at these conventions, complete with plenty of sexy bishies (and I have none of this). I'll also be competing against this, my little sister. Yeah, I don't even know. She's easily got five times as much merch as I do (and is far more impressive)!

As far as costs go, this probably will be one of the cheapest cons, considering that I only pay for the badge! But... if you factor in supplies (i.e. printing, button maker, table display etc)... not so even. Oh dear. And then it's no more cons til next spring most likely... Unless I make it to Midwest Furfest, but that's a furry con, so my anime stuff probably wouldn't fare as well.

Ugh, this is suppose to be for fun! But... instead I feel stressed OTL For the rest of the summer, I hope to focus on original art and animation.

Hee, hee, hee... V and Mangusu are like, my favsies. These aren't from Anthro Con this year, but theyr'e some of my favorite performances. I like it best when they incoporate some of the lyrics to their moves instead of just dancing to the beat. I'm not sure if you're actually suppose to do that with krumping, but acting and pantomime is a part of fursuiting, so it makes an interesting mix.

I'm still happy off the convention high! I mean, I'll just sit there and be like, "hm.. Anthro Con..." *smile*. Woah! This hasn't happened for any convention before... I wonder if it has to do with like... I don't know, really, lol. But the dancing is definitely a part of it.

Holy woah, that was freakin' awesome...

Hey guys! I'm back from Anthro Con O: And woooooooooooah, that was amazing. I'm not quite sure, but possibly one of the best, if not the best, convention experiences I've ever had. I kind of wish I could have seen more of the convention instead of sitting behind Artist Alley for most of it, but alas, business needs to be done.

I also pretty much made back what I spent too :D on travel, hotel, and badge costs, give or take twenty dollars.

Oh my God, I usually like going in sequential order when it comes to the retelling of events, but I just have to tell you about the MOST SURREAL THING I EVER SAW.

Fursuit dance competition.

No, for serious.

Like, fursuits are already surreal enough. I'm not sure what it is, but I feel like when compared with the cosplay you find at anime cons, fursuits have more of a... suspension of disbelief, at least for me. I think it has to do with how as kids we're taught that the mascot costumes aren't "so-and-so in a giant red dog outfit" no it's Clifford, the big red dog, or what have you. And like, you'd think something like seeing someone dance in a fursuit would be incredibly silly looking (and it kind of is) but wooooooooooah, there are fursuiters who know how to damn dance! Like, professional moves, and flips, and break dancing, and krumping, and it's sooooooo weird!!!

And those fursuit things are hot, heavy, and with compromised vision o_O sometimes, they even turn the head backwards so they can't see just to show off!

It was so worth missing those two hours at the Alley just to see it *__* Them furries can dance.

There wasn't really much else of the con that I saw aside from the Artist Alley... WAIT, there was the Fursuit Parade! That was intense... it went on for like... thirty minutes of fursuits O_O It is the biggest furry convention in North America so I suppose that's not a surprise. I got to see some of the fursuits that I had seen earlier in the con and thought were awesome. Like, a lombax, a Toothless, a Winnie the Pooh Rabbit (who later entered the dance contest), lots of wolves/foxes, some pretty cool dragons. I think I'll provide photos later!

Gah, there's just so much to talk about and it's late so I better snooze xD;; I hope I'll remember to tell you all later. Toodles!

So I was taking a break from anthros and working on Hetalia again ('cause I wanna get something done for Natsucon) when it occurred to me it might be cool to put song lyrics in the backgrounds of the prints. I mean, they're pole dancing and all, why not.

So hrm... combining Hetalia and Miley Cyrus? I'll almost be asking for it at the convention xD;; Both have such intense fan/hatedoms, and I'm not so sure how well they'd cross over.

I also have a great America themed font!

I'm still mulling over the idea, mostly because I don't really know many songs from China, Japan, Russia, Germany, and Italy. For France I was thinking Je Veux te Voir. I think it'd be quite appropriate.

... Hrm, any other suggestions for a sexy but patriotic American song?

Oh yeah, other things I'll be working on to reverse the Hetalia hatin': Batman, Pokemon, Assassin's Creed, Okami (the game), Katamari Damancy, Avatar, Lady Gaga... etc.

Yup. I'm debating as to what I should do about the Dragon Knight key chains though (like I always do)

Let's do a quick tally up. On hand in my bag, it looks like I've got... 3 Feegis, 4 Gils (3 unhappy, 1 happy), 4 Tethys, 3 Kaistern (2 good, 1 messed up), and 8 Ruwalks.

Evidently, no one likes Ruwalk. By the way, I don't quite remember what my original prices were. But if anyone's still interested in the DK key chains, I'd be willing to sell you the whole set of five for 8 bucks, shipping not included. Paypal only.

For other key chains, I ran out of my D. Gray Man ones at Momocon. But at the moment, I've got about 13 for Dragonair, Gyarados, and Lugia each from Pokemon. That should be good for AnthroCon me thinks. Hope to add Gardevoir to that soon.

I might also be making badge examples soon. To experiment, we'll see.

Turns out she might have put more thought in it that I originally thought, I suppose maybe publication deadlines were what forced her to rushed... it's still horribly rushed as crap, but I'm more okay with it now.

Shall explain why later maybe.

With the help of Kaname Shiro from the LJ DK comm, we were able to find the Japanese names of the characters, but plugging them into Google wasn't very fruitful ^^; Oh well. But! She gave me loads and loads of her old DK image files, which contained quite a few I hadn't seen before! Which is impressive, really, woah!

The fact that I procrastinate by reading up articles about Pokemon on bulbepedia and learning more about Pokemon than anyone should ever learn is probably not helping anyway.

I sort of realized the other day that my senior film could be seen as a story about one competent male and his flock of ungrateful, incompetent females. Unfortunate implications? O: Le gasp! Anyway, some previews!

I've also got some more pics up on Facebook, but I hope to start a blog tracking my progress for my film on blogspot once summer starts. It'll probably be a slow pace over the summer though xD; But it's also one of my goals to make billieliao.blogspot.com much more active as well! I'm going to go to Montgomery today to figure out the storyboards and animatic, hopefully, whew!

In case I forgot to mention, my senior film is actually going to be based on a comic I drew for Intro to Sequential last quarter, that featured the story of the rooster warrior as he defended his hens from sudden death. I've got the comic on DA! But so far I haven't actually linked the pages to each other 'cause I'm silly >.>;

I'm not sure about the color scheme quite yet, either, but for the most part I don't really want any of my characters to have more than two colors. Maybe three, but that'd be pushing it. For now, I don't mind the black/white look, but I'm wondering how that'll hold up next to colorful backgrounds.

Man, three studios was such a bad idea, even if two of them are semi-low maintenance... The workload of this quarter is finally catching up to me! I think part of it is also my awkward class schedule that makes it hard to plan work around during the weekdays.

I'm just looking forward to summer, gah... I need a few days to do absolutely nothing.

I've been meaning to post this up lately, but I totally forgot to...

Mkay, obviously, I like Lugia a lot more than Ho-Oh. Honestly, Ho-Oh always looked like a fancier version of Fearow to me. Where as, Lugia is more cool looking anyway, hence the superiority.

I've... also been thinking about taking down some of my DK fanart again xD;; Some of that stuff is soooooo shitty looking. Trouble is, I've put some up on that DK club's gallery so... I can't like take down all of it. Well, I guess I could. The reason I relented originally was because someone told me how happy they made her, and I don't think she knew at the time that I purged them >_>; It really touched me, because I always loved the way she wrote her fanfics and all, but now we haven't talked in like forever 'cause she's always going on about Bleach, so... yeah. (I suspect she's forgotten about me xD; )

Explaining the whole chibi dragon thing to people outside of the fandom is exhausting >_>; And I really need to start taking the dragon key chains to artist alleys in a clearance bin, or a free bin, or something xD; I think I've had them for almost a year now? (Or killing with fire, but I'm not one for random destruction) Even when I was at the furry con, nobody was interested in dragon anthros >>; but then again, furry conventions are more about custom commissions than physical merch.
