Maybe
A poem
Introduction
I haven’t written poetry before . Well, that’s probably not entirely true, I likely wrote some at school but probably very badly I might add.
I had an idea that came to me about our limiting beliefs. We all have them. Some conscious and some buried deep in the subconscious. I’ve been doing some work trying to dig up some of mine. I know many of them - no major physical hang-ups to mention really, but mine are more around my ability to actually create something meaningful. I don’t even know exactly what that is, but it’s certainly not to spend the next 30 years in LED lit corporate hell.
The key, or so I understand it, is to dispel those limiting beliefs, especially the ones in the subconscious mind. The problem is if you’re say underconfident about public speaking or moreover, something physical, simply looking in the mirror and telling yourself you’re not these things will be analysed by the logical part of your brain and disproven. “No, you definitely do hate public speaking because you get nervous before doing so.” Or, “Nope, you absolutely do have big ears because that boy made fun of them when you were 7”. Game, set & match.
Or is it?
I’m generally too logical to be able to disprove my limiting beliefs but I thought, maybe I could reframe it. Maybe the word maybe is the key here. I thought, “Yeah, maybe I have been underconfident about certain things in the past, but maybe I won’t be in future. Maybe your last post wasn’t very good but maybe people will love this one.”
Something clicked.
I loved the flexibility of it. I loved the impermanence. I loved the endless possibilities it created. It was like a lightbulb going off. It’s like giving a nod to my logical, self-deprecating side and telling it that whilst you may have a point, maybe you’re wrong on this one.
Maybe maybe is the most powerful word we can say… Maybe just might open up infinite opportunities because when you involuntarily tell yourself you can’t, just turn around and think, “Maybe I can”.
Maybe
Maybe you were wrong
Maybe you are funny
Maybe you should take a chance
Maybe you don't need to
Maybe you don't know it yet
Maybe you knew it already
Maybe you don't need to change
Maybe you already have
Maybe you are strong
Maybe you are loved
Maybe the world is your oyster
Maybe you are already home
With love,
Waylon

love this word play: "Maybe the world is your oyster
Maybe you are already home" Thank you!
this is really lovely. it goes with the sentiment of, "why not me?" "why couldn't i?" i pray that the light that bathes you today is more solar than artificial.
