In any other time, any other place, these groups may never have crossed paths-- Japanese vocalist Yurika Hanashima accompanying psychedelic Mediterranean instrumentalists Sababa 5 (Ilan Smilan, Amir Sadot, Itamar Weinstein, Eitan Drabkin) (yes, there are four of them). The work that results is enigmatic, ethereal, unexpected. Like a winding road between mountains, no easy paths in sight--keep your wits about you and you may stumble upon startling beauty. Yurika's siren melody weaves between the driving rhythms of drums and bass. To my American ears, "Kokoro" offers a sound I've never encountered anywhere else.
