realistic coloring tutorial

Hey guys, long time no see. I decided to post a new tutorial since my last one did pretty well. There's a lot of manga and anime coloring tutorials out there, so I thought I'd make my own coloring tutorial, but with real people. I hope you guys this useful and fun. ♥

TURNING BLACK & WHITE PHOTOS INTO COLORED PHOTOS
The purpose of this photoshop tutorial is to help you learn how to turn black and white pictures and turn them into a realistic, natural colored one. This learning process takes patience, a few layers, a lot of color balancing, and about 30 minutes to kill. Don't let it scare you though, its actually not that hard once you get the hang of it. If you are ready, we should get started!

STEP 1: SELECT IMAGE
Find a black and white picture you love and crop it to your liking. The picture I am going to use in this tutorial is ~~the gorgeous~~ Daniel Henney. You can see the image is of decent size and the quality is in great shape, making this coloring process easier on us. You can use this image also to help follow along.

STEP 2: SKIN COLOR
Make a new layer and this will be your skin color layer. Picking the right skin color can be tricky, so a quick way to do this is to find a picture of your subject in color (or any person you want if there's no color pictures of your subject), and take a color sample from the skin with your eyedropper tool . Now on your new layer and with a paintbrush , color all the spots with skin exposed. It can be messy, we will clean up later. Once you are done, you will want to set your skin layer to Color Burn or Linear Burn. It's already starting to look like skin but it's probably too dark so set your layer to a lower opacity, I set mine to about 50%. Now erase away all unwanted skin color and erase away the eye area. Merge the layers together.

STEP 3: DARKENING EYEBROWS
If you noticed the eyebrow color blends into the skin color, Henney has dark eyebrows so we want to change that but also keep it natural. What we're going to do is get our polygonal lasso tool , and select just the brow area. After selecting the eyebrows you will want to go to Replace Color. When the menubox is up take the eyedropper and select the main color of the brow. Make sure the Fuzziness level is about 70-100. Now under Lightness, set the bar to about -50. Now Henney has a more realistic color for his eyebrows.

STEP 4: COLORING THE LIPS
Coloring the lips is easy. Start with a new layer and decide on a light, but vivid pink lip color to use. Paint the whole lip area and set your lip layer to multiply. If the lips are too dark for your taste, set the layer's opacity level to about 50% or lower. Now erase all unwanted color and merge the layers together. For more depth, I used the dodge tool , and lightly highlighted the inner part of his lip, so it subtly pops out.

STEP 5: COLORING THE EYES
Like always, make a new layer, we will be painting over the white part of the eyes. We will want to pick a natural off-white/pale yellow to color over and a dark reddish-pink for the corners of the eyes, this will give the eye a more realistic look than having stark white eyes staring at you. Once painted over, set the layer to multiply and set the opacity to about 20%. Merge the layers together.

Once again make a new layer, this is going to be for the iris. Since Henney has brown eyes we're going to use an orange color so it can show up against the dark eyes. After painting over the iris, set the layer to multiply and opacity to about 50%. Combine all the layers. Now with your dodge tool, lightly around the pupil, create a soft highlight to give the eyes a gentle sparkle. If you over do the highlighting, it will come across very cheesy. Subtle is key.

STEP 6: HAIR COLOR
Daniel Henney has dark hair, but we still want to color it because his actual hair isn't dark grey. So first, merge your layers from before and create a new layer for your hair. For Dan, I took a light brown and colored over his hair and afterwards setted the hair layer to Overlay. I also toned down the opacity to about 20%. The result isn't huge, but it is noticable and makes his hair more shiny. After that merge the layers together and now we will want to blend the hairline in better. Find your sponge tool , and set it to 50% desaturated. Now lightly start blending around the hairline and around the face.

STEP 7: ADJUSTING YOUR CONTRAST & JAZZING UP THE BACKGROUND IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT.
As for layers and coloring goes, you're pretty much done! If you want you might want to tweak around the saturation and contrast of your image. You can also add some color to the background to give the image a more finished look. I just added a screen layer of a blurry lens flare to give the image a more "photo" look. At the end, I finally came to these results:

**HOW TO INSTALL "DESATURATED LIFE"**

tutorial: cleaning out unwanted text from scans

My first tutorial here on Dodoki. I wanted to make something that was different than most tutorials and something that anyone can benefit from, whether you are an icon maker, a layout maker, or just want to make pretty graphics for yourself. Hope you enjoy the tutorial.

TUTORIAL: HOW TO CLEAN OUT TEXT FROM PICTURES AND SCANS.

This tutorial is for Photoshop 7.0 and higher users who would like to learn how to get rid of text from pictures while making the photo look untouched. This is quite helpful for when you really want to use a picture for your graphic designing, but the only thing that is stopping you is gaudy text. It's an easy process but it takes patience. There are probably a million different ways to do this, but this is simply the way I do it, and it has been working for me for all kind of projects. If you're still following along, let's get started.

STEP 01: SELECT YOUR PICTURE
Get your Photoshop ready and select an image you want to clean up. You might want to pick a scan that isn't too text heavy or too many colors if this is your first time experimenting something like this. I will be using the following picture and you can use it too to follow along.

Its big, the quality is decent, and the text isn't all over the place.

STEP 02: PAINTING OVER
In this step, select your eyedropper tool , and you will want to pick a color that is next to the letter that you will start cleaning up. Once you have gotten your color sample, select your paintbrush and choose an 10-20px airbrush (bigger or smaller depending on your image size) and start painting over the letters. It doesn't have to be perfect, just make sure the letters are completely covered. Your process should look something like this:

STEP 03: HEALING YOUR PICTURE
Now this is where your picture will start looking more natural and also getting rid of that ugly paint over. You will want to select your healing tool , and bring down your healing tool drop box. Your brush should be on the smaller and lighter side, about 20-80px diameter, and about 30% hardness/spacing. If you make your brush bigger and any harder, you will end up getting chunky spots and sharp noticable edges.

After your healing tool is set up, find an untouched area thats close by to the letters so it can match up. For my pic, the cheek area across Cloud's nose is a good place to get a healing sample. To get a healing sample, have your brush over the area you want, hold down the ALT button and left-click with your mouse. You now have your sample.

Start using your healing brush by clicking on the desired letters. You'll already start to see the painted letters blending in. Keep repeating this for all the letters. Remember, do not make paintstrokes with it. It can cause some streaking and unwanted shading. Simple one click motions over your source is what you need. Periodically, you will want to make new healing samples because if you don't, you will start getting a repeating pattern effect, and that is definitely not natural. It can take some time and practice to decide what areas make good samples, but if you have the basic idea on how shading/lighting works, it shouldn't be to much trouble. Your final result should look like something like this:

STEP 04: YOU'RE DONE
That is basically all you have to do. The healing brush is a great tool for not just text but also for unwanted marks, evening out skin color, and many other reasons. **HOW TO INSTALL "AUTUMN MORNING & WINTER NIGHT"**

1. Select journal theme and choose any Smooth Sailing.

2. Further down under Choose a Page Setup, select 1 column: no sidebar.

4. In the Display page, click the edit link for Journal Title, and put your site's name or a short witty phrase.

5. In the Display page again, go down to Wrap Entry text under userinfo, and select Yes if you want icons in your entries. If you do not want icons, go under Usericon Visibility and choose Do Not Show Any Icons. If you do choose to use icons, make sure to go to Userinfo Position in Entries and pick Right Side of Entry Text.

6. In the Custom CSS page, copy the following stylesheet and paste it in the code box. Make sure to select No in both drop-down boxes.

**HOW TO INSTALL "AIRY FEELING & HEAVY FEELING"**

1. Select journal theme and choose any Smooth Sailing.

2. Further down under Choose a Page Setup, select 1 column: no sidebar.

4. In the Display page, click the edit link for Journal Title, and put your site's name or whatever witty phrase you want to say.

5. In the Display page again, go down to Wrap Entry text under userinfo, and select Yes if you want icons in your entries. If you do not want icons, go under Usericon Visibility and choose Do Not Show Any Icons.

6. In the Custom CSS page, copy the following stylesheet and paste it in the code box. Make sure to select No in both drop-down boxes.

**HOW TO INSTALL "ORIENTAL SEA"**

1. Select journal theme and choose any Smooth Sailing.

2. Further down under Choose a Page Setup, select 2 column: left sidebar.

3. If you are using this layout in a Plus account, make sure you set the ads as Between Entries. Skip this step if you are using Basic or Paid account.

4. In the Display page, go down to Wrap Entry text under userinfo, and select Yes if you want icons in your entries. If you do not want icons, go under Usericon Visibility and choose Do Not Show Any Icons.

5. In the Sidebar page, make sure to hide all items, except for Links Visibility and Free Text Sidebox. Choose 1 position for the Links Visibility, and then 2 position for Free Text Sidebox.. If you don't want the Free Text Box, the Calendar also looks great on it too. Follow the same steps, but instead hide the Free Text Box, and make Lastest Month Calendar position number 2.
