What is Speed in China?#
Speed in China is a WordPress plugin that lets you test your website speed from multiple locations inside mainland China, directly from your WordPress dashboard. Many websites that load fine for Western visitors take 30+ seconds — or fail entirely — for visitors in China, due to the Great Firewall blocking services like Google Fonts, Google Analytics, Facebook, and more.
Speed in China identifies these problems and provides tools to fix them, including automatic Google Font localization and deep resource analysis.
How Does It Work?#
The plugin connects to the Globalping API — a worldwide network of probes — to run real HTTP speed tests from servers located in mainland China. Each test measures:
- DNS lookup — How long it takes to resolve your domain
- TCP connection — Time to establish a connection to your server
- TLS handshake — SSL certificate negotiation time
- TTFB (Time to First Byte) — How long before the first byte of your page arrives
- Download time — How long to transfer the full response
- Total load time — End-to-end time from request to completion
Results are tested from 4 different locations across mainland China (typically Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen) and displayed with color-coded performance grades.
