St. Olavs Hospital – Pioneering unified communication since 2003
St. Olavs Hospital, the University Hospital of Trondheim, is one of Norway’s largest and most advanced healthcare institutions. With around 1,000 beds and over 11,000 employees, it serves as a central provider of specialised health services in the region.
Since 2003, St. Olavs has been a close development partner of DNV Imatis – and was the very first hospital to implement our platform.
Background
When St. Olavs Hospital was rebuilt in the early 2000s, it marked a rare opportunity to design and implement a new digital infrastructure from the ground up. Rather than retrofitting technology after construction, digital workflows, communication and coordination were embedded into the hospital’s design from the start. At the heart of this was a unified messaging platform that would support clinical, technical and logistical communication across departments and roles.
Scope of delivery
As part of the new-build delivery, DNV Imatis provided a comprehensive communication and messaging platform that included:
- A mobile user interface used by clinical and support staff.
- Bedside patient terminals to enable patients to access relevant information and communicate with staff.
- A central messaging server managing internal messaging and alarm distribution.
- Role-based routing to ensure that all messages, alerts and tasks reach the right role – not just a specific individual – regardless of shift patterns or department structure.
- Task management for porters.
- Digital check-in and payment solutions.
This foundation enabled St. Olavs to operate with digital, mobile and intelligent communication flows that continue to evolve today.
Key components today
- Messaging server: Facilitates over 5 million alarms, alerts and messages annually.
- Mobile user interface: Used across 3,500 mobile devices, enabling real-time, role-based communication.
- System integration: Nurse call systems, AGVs (automated guided vehicles), telephony, AGVs, pneumatic tube systems, and emergency alerts all connected to the same messaging platform.
- Task management: The hospital uses Tasks to manage logistical flows, including portering assignments related to clean and soiled equipment to and from operating theatres and the central sterile unit
- Role-based communication: Ensures messages and alarms reach the appropriate on-duty staff regardless of location or shift.
- Silent hospital functionality: Traditional audible call bell alerts are replaced with smart notifications delivered directly to staff smartphones. The platform enables targeted, silent communication between patients and ward teams, supporting quieter environments and more efficient workflows.
