Star Trek Halloween... Finally!!!!!!

    <lj:music>Background noise including rain!</lj:music>

I finally went out to snag a Halloween costume and what should I stumble upon? Trek costumes, of course. And... Michael Jackson, but this post isn't about him or vampires or race car drivers or any of that other stuff I didn't take pictures of.

It's about Trek and our local contributions to starting the little ones on their lifetime journey of loving ST.

<-- Is this your kid??? It should be!

So this is the bigger version of Spock One. It's a preview of a costume they're supposed to be selling for kids and have stocked in the back, but if I'm reading the pictured list correctly, you're supposed to magickally find all of this stuff yourself. *shrugs*

This is the adult Uhura costume they have to offer, which you also have to somehow magickally put together yourself. Something about Uhura is different, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

This is the stand alone ST display that had the trio on it. First was Spock on top <strike>where he should be</strike> and both Kirk and Uhura under him <stike>the way I like them</strike>. For some reason, no one seemed to like Uhura as much, since they knocked her on the ground... :(

Also, it seems that both the Federation and the Jedi Council use the same manufacturer, because these pistols looks strangely familiar to the phasers.

    <lj:music>The music from this guy's headphones</lj:music>

Today is the final day that my Extra Icons feature will be active. Had the last year of LJ's stupidity not occurred, I would never have come this close to letting my extra icons lapse. As it were, they went apeshit and I went to InsaneJournal, whose paid accounts receive more icons by default than I receive from Extra Icons and "Loyalty Icons" combined.

113 icons spaces.

That's all the room I have to display some of the best, funniest, most interesting, and kickass artwork to be summed up in 100x100 pixels of whoa!.

When you only have six, formally three, icon spaces to work with on a free account, it seems like all the room in the world. Sadly it isn't and even IJ's 250 default icon spaces will eventually be filled up if I stay on their site for three+ years, too.

It kind of makes me sad to have a faraway deadline suddenly in my face. I put off transferring all of my icons over to IJ, because it's tedious work. Anyone who's changed journals could tell you so. Then, there was the not-even-believed-by-me dual-journal thing I was working with. To be completely honest, I hardly ever come by unless I’ve heard on IJ that something interesting had happened, I get an email about a news update and want to see what new shitstorm LJ is attempting to kick up, chase_jack needs an entry approved, or if I want to occasionally check on something. That's pretty much it.

I didn't want to delete this account, because I have had it three+ years and it was paid up until this year. I also didn't want to waste my money by deleting an account I had plunked down hard-earned money to maintain.

An extremely dramatic and corny part of me can't help but mentally compare this to watching a slow death. You know, how it's said that one sense goes first and then another and another until there's nothing left but darkness and a flat line. That's definitely how this comes across. The Paid status goes out at the beginning of next week. I do have to wonder if LJ somehow went back to the way it was, would I get my loyalty icons from my previous paid time back? I mean, it's only fair, because I was loyally paying to continue using the better features all of that time; and would have gladly continued to do so if LJ hadn't lost their shit.

I'm guessing not, because New LJ's all about money and I'm pretty sure that they will simply say that more "Loyalty" spots would have to be earned. This is just as well, because loyalty to a company has to be earned from its user base. Looking at things now, I see LJ not only not being able to completely pulling it off, but not giving a damn to do so. That, makes me saddest of all.

I just need to go double check that I have back ups for the pictures I have stored in LJ's laughable Scrapbook before my account expires. If I can avoid having to manually transfer anything else over, I will.

Danielle

All right. I know that I don't fiction directly in my LJ anymore, because my IJ has taken its place and I post in my comms, but I'm not a member of any Rodney/John comms, so I posted where I could. : )

Danielle

ETA: Pfft! I forgot to add a summary for this fic. It's been a while and I had to absolutely rush to get this up. I thought I'd add that now. Hee.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Title: Take My Hand, Friend, and Come With Me
Author: dmitchell1985
Rating: PG - for all of the swearing
Characters: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay
Warnings: None, really.
Disclaimer: I don't own these dudes.
Spoilers: Uhrm. Nothing major or current.
Word Count: 2,407
Summary: “Rodney snorted and asked how often these things could go wrong, because it really was mathematically impossible for things to go wrong a hundred percent of the time.”
Author’s Notes: OH. MY. GOD. How did a drabble, then a double drabble, then a triple drabble, then "just 700 words," then "just 1,000 words," then "just over 1,000 words" balloon into this?! I kept trying to end the fic, but it could literally continue on well after where I managed to hack it off due to the library closing on me and my having to relocate to the lobby. I even ended up changing the intended ending in the process because it no longer fit, which made it longer still. Well, I changed it slightly, because the fic buzzed on past where it was supposed to go. It's still in there. (Guess where! = D)

Chark, I do hope that you like this and I did the friendship angle well enough. This fic wanted to head over into the relationship area, because I am obviously incapable of writing two people being "just friends." Either way, I do wish you the happiest of birthdays, darlin'. You deserve it, liek woah.

--

John muttered angrily to himself after listening to Rodney shout for him to ‘please, shut the hell up, because yelling at me will not make me work any faster!’ He decided to deliver an unhelpful kick to the side of the puddle jumper in return and instantly regretted it.

“I heard that,” came Rodney’s voice over John’s yelps of pain from inside the ship, “and it’s not helping anything. So, let’s not damage the ship anymore than it already is, okay? Thank you!”

John clutched at his boot and cursed the position he had found himself in once more. Rodney had simply had to continue digging through the Ancients’ wildly unreliable database for worlds to explore for new energy sources. Although they certainly needed all of the power they could get, John was beginning to seriously doubt the sanity of seeking out these types of go-see missions. When he brought this up at the staff meeting, Rodney had rolled his eyes and sighed as though all of the grief in the world was his alone to manage.

Rodney then pointed out the fact that military people were supposed to "excel" at reconnaissance missions and there really wasn’t any other choice for them, as there was no other way to find gate addresses outside of randomly pressing the DHD's buttons. That, of course, would only lead to certain death. At least, that was the way Rodney sold it.

Since Rodney sold all of his ideas the same way, immediate danger or not, John tended to take the whole ‘we’re going to die’ frenzy with two shakers of salt. This was Rodney, after all. No matter how brilliant he might be, panicking at the slightest sign of trouble was not outside of his routine responses for times of crisis and leisure alike.

But now, more or less stranded on a world Rodney had been absolutely convinced contained a horde of ZPMs, John almost wished he had gone along with Teyla and Ronon to visit the monks of M50-437. Even an entire day of mediation sounded more appealing about now, if it held a chance of him getting back to his own bed on Atlantis once they were done.

John had warned Rodney about writing off the traps that might have been left behind or programs that may not have been functioning properly when the Ancients made another one of their famed hasty retreats from a planet they probably shouldn’t have been on in the first place.

Rodney snorted and asked how often these things could go wrong, because it really was mathematically impossible for things to go wrong a hundred percent of the time.

John told him to think back on every mission they had been on that was supposed to be the cakewalk Rodney had promised, but turned into them being kidnapped by rebels. He also told Rodney to think about all of the times Rodney himself had insisted that a minor detail that might cause them all to blow up into billions of formerly well-armed pieces, but snowballed into them running for life and limb and barely making it through the stargate as things went to hell completely. He didn’t feel the need to bring up the missions that they knew going into them that they would be utter cluster fucks to deal with and attempt to withdraw from safely.

He knew Rodney was thinking of those mission as well. He also knew that Rodney was mulling over the fact that ‘these things’ could go wrong quickly and with more frequency than any of them seemed to remember after the fact.

John knew all of this, because Rodney had shut up then and pressed his lips together for a moment before muttering that he was more right than wrong. John let that one slide, because Rodney usually was and he wanted to get this damned retrieval mission over with.

They had no problem finding the cache of ZPMs after they wound their way through seemingly endless tunnels and worked through each of the puzzles that served as locks. They’d loaded themselves down with as many of the ZPM units as the four storage cases between them would hold and headed for the exit. They were mere yards away from the door that lead out of the abandoned facility and into the surrounding field and woods when It happened.

It being the moment when Hell opted to make good on its outstanding promise to come for another visit following the last time they’d barely escaped its grasp.

Hell also opted to bring its friends Angry Natives and Miniature Ancient Drones along for the ride. This naturally had John cursing the friend who’d brought him along for the ride.

They’d had to drop or toss all of the ZPM storage cases and most of their gear to outrun the knife-wielding villagers that were screeching that they were desecrating the Ancients holy ground and stealing to boot. What wasn’t discarded aimlessly was launched in the general direction of the pursuing mob.

They’d only enjoyed the barest sense of reprieve upon reaching the puddle jumper and getting it into the air, when an ominous boom echoed through the air and shook the jumper. The HUD flashed into view, showcasing the damage their ship had taken, causing Rodney to impressively tint the air navy with the inventive strings of “Fuck!” and “Damn!” and Shit!” he cobbled together.

John gripped the controls and told Rodney to hold on as the jumper plummeted toward the forest waiting to catch them in its many branched arms. John had been in some bad landings before and he found that smashing into any convenient group of treetops that happened to be around just then wasn’t the worst they could do. They could have been flying over the open sea or a grassy field that contained nothing at all between them and the fast approaching ground. John didn’t want to think about either of those landings at the moment. However, he found he couldn’t really help it; even as he raised the shield a second too late after they’d already collided with the first of the trees.

They crashed and thumped through limbs that would have destroyed the entire ship had the shield not been active. John was able to enjoy that comfort for several seconds more before the shield too had sputtered out and abandoned them to their fate. John then comforted himself with the fact that it was okay, really, because the ground was reaching up to snatch them from the air and it all worked out well either way.

Thrown from their seats and more than slightly dazed from the impact, John and Rodney had hauled themselves up from the floor; only to discover that the jumper had not only taken out its surrounding trees, it had considerately impeded itself halfway into the dirt. Despite all of this, John knew that it could have been much worse, which he informed a snarling Rodney, who was bleeding from a deep-looking gash on his forehead. He listened to the ranting and comparisons to the last time Rodney had suffered a head injury in a downed puddle jumper until Rodney wore himself out and was panting from the exertion.

John had nodded slowly, ignoring the building headache that was gathering steam and his own bleeding wounds.

“Look, McKay. It happened, now we need to get out of here. Can you get us out of here or not?” he had asked quietly, because after all of Rodney’s screaming, someone had to be reasonable and quiet.

He knew that his ability to whisper wouldn’t last long in the face of them attempting to free themselves and head back to Atlantis with another failed mission to report. He thought he’d take advantage of it then while his headache was at its worst. They both knew that it would only be a matter of When he started yelling back at Rodney for his incompetence in choosing this planet.

There were the same halted assurances of yes, maybe, possibly, probably Rodney could repair whatever had been hit to cause them to crash. To this, John responded that they should at least make sure that communications were functional first, for the instant Elizabeth tried to dial in to contact them once they had officially missed their scheduled time of return or status report.

Rodney agreed wholeheartedly.

That had been three days ago and Rodney appeared to be no closer to repairing communications than they were to sprouting wings and bodily flying to the gate instead. They’d managed to get the jumper’s rear hatch open, but little else had responded to any of the manual or mental commands John and Rodney initiated.

Amazingly, along with now miraculously showing a preference for mediation with monks, John wished that he had went ahead and spent the time with Rodney that he’d originally asked for. Then, he might not be stuck in the middle a forest weeks away from the gate by foot and ready to strangle anything that so much as looked at him.

But, there’d always been something that kept them busy and John, like anyone average joe, had found it a mite difficult to squeeze one-on-one team bonding time in between mass plagues and Wraith attacks and Ascended women that he never saw coming.

Though they’d been pretty lucky – and John considered that with two shakers of salt, as well – so far, they were still ass out as far as the big picture was concerned. As far as individual pieces of the big picture were concerned, the villagers had quickly lost their trail. Despite obviously having the advantage of knowing the woods of their own planet, they hadn’t come traipsing into John and Rodney’s makeshift clearing. The miniature drones they still weren’t sure if they’d triggered as they were leaving or were sent after them by the facility’s would-be protectors that had let them inside to begin with, hadn’t taken anymore shots at them. It seemed that they were in the clear for the time being. But with John’s admittedly shaky luck, there wasn’t any telling what would come for them next.

He hoped that it would be Teyla and Ronon and fifteen teams of marines come to extract them. For all he knew, the next thing to come along would be a Pegasus-style man-eating squirrel hell-bent on gnawing their eyes from their sockets.

He also begrudgingly figured that Rodney might have set the drones off himself to get what he had been bugging John for more and more lately as he watched Teyla and Ronon go off to the Athosians’ new home world for one occasion or another. He’d explained that he wanted to spend some time with a buddy who cared enough to bring a flash drive loaded with his favorite music or didn’t attempt to slip him lemon squares.

He just wanted to hang out with John, but they’d had team missions and near misses instead. There had been plenty of times they spent in one another’s presence, but there hadn't been chats about what their lives were like back on Earth. There had been daring rescues, but not nearly enough games of chess to argue about.

John missed those things, too, sometimes, but work was work for him. He sighed to himself as he thought all of this over.

He was jarred from his thoughts by the sound of Rodney’s joyful cries of celebration. It took him a moment to understand what was happening, but from the gleeful fragments of sentences and admonishments of “About time!” and “What took you so?!” John knew that something good must have been happening for once.

He had gotten as far as climbing up the rear hatch before there was a solid block of Rodney bowling him over in a hug he only associated with Ronon and screaming in his ear.

“I was working on the puddle jumper’s communications and I still couldn’t get them to work, when I heard the same barely audible chirping we’ve been hearing for three days. I searched until I found it, because it’s been driving me crazy like you wouldn’t believe. Turns out that our earpieces still worked and we'd just lost them in the impact instead of being crushed like I thought they had been. I found mine wedged into the back seat.

“When I got it in my ear, I found out that it was Elizabeth all along! She, Teyla, and that guy Chuck, you know Chuck, the technician, remember? Never mind. Elizabeth! They’ve been trying to hail us on the radio for days and we never even noticed, because we’d been working on the jumper’s communication system and getting the jumper itself to fly.

“They’ve been searching for us for days in five jumpers and still haven’t found us in all of this coverage.” Rodney finally drew a lungful of breath and waved at the trees surrounding them before continuing on.

“The drones gave them some problems, but Radek managed to shut them off when they finally reached the area those psychopaths were guarding. They got them, too, by the way. Well, they sent the jumpers back out to continue their sweeps for us while Radek went into the hold and retrieved more ZedPMs. We’re going home! And we’re going to have ZedPMs to show for this mess!”

Rodney dug his arms into John’s sides as he finished and inhaled another deep breath. John patted him on the back awkwardly, not quite able to find the appropriate ‘we’re not going to die’ words after Rodney had spewed out so many. Instead, he nodded and told Rodney that that was great, because peeing in the woods long term wasn’t really for him.

Rodney laughed at that and John was glad to hear it. Only five minutes ago, they had been looking at the prospect of having to spend weeks walking toward the stargate in hopes of getting off the planet. Now, they were hugging and cheering and basking in the knowledge that they had all of the ZPMs they needed.

As grouchy as time spent with Rodney sometimes made John, he thought he might give it a try more often, especially if it kept Fate from smacking him with a repeat of the last three days to get it to happen. And even more importantly, if Rodney gave him more hugs like the one they were currently sharing. John might not have been a touchy person normally, but in times like these, a little comfort went a long way.

Besides, it was one of the best hugs John had had in a long time.

--

The End!

All right, so I'm writing this fic and I'm attempting to look through stuff on Google, but I wanted a second opinion on anything I might find.

I need to kill bugs. Not just bugs on the ground, but bugs that burrow into people's brains to lay their eggs.

Now, the bugs I've created have shown to be immune to everything my people have tried thus far and it would almost be better to simply shoot the infected folks now. As the eggs are spread out, they can't simply be cut out. Radiation might be too much, unless someone can explain to me about the different doses of radiation or I find something through Google.

What I was considering was a take on the soap and water will kill bugs approach.

I know that if you squirt bugs with hot water and a bit of soap, they'll die a less chemically intense death. I wanted to know if there was a chemical composition close in nature to soap, that wouldn't harm a human, but would act sort of like an antibotic? Is there something I need to look for in particular, because I'm just shooting blindly here.

If there are any other suggestions on how I can kill these buggers, I'd love to hear them.

Danielle

Okay, so the random mini freak out I had about switching over to Hanson slash for Nano blew away as soon as I put pen to paper this morning. I blame the Nano comms I visited in the last couple of days. I was pretty calm about the upcoming Nano festivities, with the exception of the fact that I could start writing yet.

Since I have started writing, I truly do think that the first couple is going to be easiest to write. It's Rodney/Radek, so it'll pretty much write itself. Mostly, I'm introducing my Rodney and explaining why he chose Radek first.

The hp_halloween drabbles were posted yesterday to celebrate the holiday. I didn't post it here, so I'm going to go ahead and do that now.

This is the drabbles that I wrote. I tried to get in as much of wild_huntress' request as I could using only 200 words. It's Remus-centric with a pre-slash-if-you-look vibe featuring Sirius. Feel free to have a looksee.

This is the double drabble I received. I'm going to have to request Neville/Luna more often. I just love them so. The drabble's hella funny, so I do suggest that you take a gander at it and leave a little hello.

Right now, I need to go answer email, because they've piled up in only a day. I also need to:

Type up my Nano bit for the day.

Go do Neopets for the day.

Cross post my drabble to my IJ.

Oy! I think that I might just bury my head somewhere and do a whole bunch of nothing.

Danielle

So. . .

The drabbles I'm sure I've mentioned here occasionally are finally finished. I crammed fifty of these things into approximately 30 days, because I wanted to finish before Nano. I also wanted to get myself into the habit of writing something every day, because it's damned hard to go from writing next to nothing to 50K in 30 days.

Yes, I already know there is no way in hell that I am going to finish, but that's supposed to be my goal. Anyway, here is my completed table. All of the links head over to InsaneJournal and directly to the entry cuts.

Please be scrolling up (or down, as some of the cases are) to check out the spoiler and warnings notes. Some of these drabbles are squicky, but most are harmless. I have to admit that the squicky set of three are my favorite ones, the second one being solid gold! I will one day have to write that drabble out into a full length fic. = D

SGA Renewed for Season Five? Aww, man!

    <lj:music>Talking!</lj:music>

NOTE: This entry contains general spoilers for "Stargate Atlantis." The spoilers do wander all over the place, so do read with caution.

____________

Okay, so I already mentioned how I'm not exactly fond of the new SGA. Well, it seems that New SGA has been renewed for a fifth season. I am well aware of the fact that this makes me a "bad Stargate fan," but I was kind of hoping that they wouldn't be.

Hold on there a moment! I can already hear the howls of rage and remarks questioning my sanity.

Well, my reasons, like many, are purely selfish. I was kinda hoping they would get the ax and then would see that maybe they shouldn't have gone around changing the cast so readily. True, Aiden left and things weren't 100% shaken up. But come on! TWO main cast members go off and every-damn-body joins the new cast?

Now, I was definitely one of the people that was rooting for SG-1 to have an 11th season, because why the hell not? But this whole thing about being so pigheaded about having the series continue on to where I am seeing so much of that cast on SGA? Ugph.

I liked the good old days when Atlantis was Atlantis and they didn't have so many ties to Earth. Sure, it's nice to the see the SG-1 crew around, but they've had their time. They have their movie thing. As much as I understand that progress has to take place, I truly believe that this show should have been left to it's own.

I guess that I really shouldn't be surprised, because ever since "Sunday" came out, I've lost a great deal of my cheer concerning SGA. Do I still like the characters I've become invested in, damn skippy! Do I want to see Amanda Tapping push Torri out of the way, have the entire SG-1 crew paraded through the show, and have some new doctor come in to replace Carson, not even a little bit.

Yes, we all know that Carson will be back for a couple of episodes, which is awesome!, and that Elizabeth isn't technically dead, that I know of, but I miss the old show! I missed the show where I didn't have to worrry about that damned Dr. Keller putting the moves on Ronon. I missed the show where it was easier to have Ronon and Carson shackin' up with Rodney, because that is love and you know it.

I miss the occasionally interconnecting parallel shows where SGA had its own space to do its own thing and SG-1 had their's. Now, it's just a bunch of mish mash. I'm not usually one of those people that doesn't want their foods touching one another on their plates, but this is one of those times!

And yes, I know that I should calm the fuck down already, because it's just a television show, but it's one of my television shows. I don't watch that many television programs, due to work and lack of overall interest in watching television. I'd much rather be online or read or writing, instead of simply plunking myself down in front of a televison set.

I got the news like I get all of my SGA news as of late, from Twitter. There were SO MANY people cheering and dancing, that Danielle simply couldn't handle it and I turned the notifications off. There was only so much good cheer I could handle, because I'm still all broken up about my old cast set.

Since I am being honest, I didn't doubt for a second that they'd get renewed. Not even a little bit. I just hoped that they wouldn't, even though I wouldn't want any of the cast or crew to be out-of-work. What with every single member of Team!Sheppard having a baby and all. I just sort of imagined them doing other Stargate-related projects, like movies and cons. Heh.

Now, I sent this article to myself so that I could get the direct link for this entry, and this advertisement was at the bottom of the email:

Could they rub it in any more? I mean, if you're going to cancel a series and have the lineup change before you do, one would think that you'd stop sending out that ad. : (

Anyway, I have drabbles to type and post, and possibly even a bit of roaming to do today. I also need to crosspost this over to IJ, since that is technically my fandom journal these days. It simply made it here first, because I was answering comments here and I knew that everyone and their mothers would be chatting about it here.

*waves*

I hope that everyone's day is going well.

Danielle

Am I the only one this makes ill? Not the entry itself, but the Ronon spoiler it links to. Ugh.

I still haven't gotten over Carson, and here this new person has been shoved in our faces so abruptly, it's like Carson was never there. <strike>Yes, I am ignoring her "reluctance" to take over Carson's position.</strike> Now, she's moving in on the cast already. Fucking hell! Give a girl some time to grieve, okay?! Furthermore, give that newbie time to actually be in the series for a while first.

When the series first started out, there was a bit of the oh-la-la, but plenty of folks had to wait for it. Personally, that Keller needs to be among them. Not only do I really not want to see on her on-screeen or talked about, I really don't want to see her lovin' up Ronon, which'd give her even more screen time. UGH!!!

So I did see all of the comments for my fic list help entry and I'll have to go through them. There was mucho fandom love to enjoy. If only I didn't have yucky Keller-related horribleness to ruin my day.

Anyway, I have ten drabbles to type up and I'll probably post six today. It was supposed to be three before work and three after, but I got screwed over.

Yay.

My favorite.

Bitterly yours,

Danielle

    <lj:music>I don't know. It's on somone else's headphones.</lj:music>

Okay. I was just thinking about this last night after I had already left, but I'm going to need help in a MAJOR way for the Nano idea I've come up with. It was originally supposed to an original fic or poetry or something, but that fell by the wayside.

Now, it's going to be all of these characters that I've never written before in relation to Rodney, even though I have a sort of feel for the way I want to write them. The part that is going to get me is how they come across in fanon and what tidbits I don't know about most of these folks. I wanted to figure out what works about them and what doesn't. For instance, is there a little quirk that people put into their fics (and art) that everyone adores? Or, is there an annoying trait that no one likes to see attached to a certain character?

These are the questions I'm now asking fandom, because Danielle is clearly going to need a ton of help here. True, there's no way in hell I am going to finish this story in 31 days, but I want to commit to writing a fic like this and seeing it through to the end, even if it takes me an entire year to write.

So, my question is this, what is your favorite fic featuring the characters I am going to list paired with *drum roll* Rodney? And I don't just mean you really liked the story, I mean your favorite as in it was what made you like the pairing in the first place, brought you into the SGA fandom altogether, or presents the characters and their relationship so well, that it could actually be plausible. I am talking about the best fics of all time that reminded you exactly why you are so committed to your pairing.

Also these two bits:

<strike>I checked SGA storyfinders, and I didn't get a bite back on my fic search. Does anyone know the name of the Impotent!Ronon/Confuzzled!Rodney fic where they still have loads of great sex despite the lack of Ronon being able to get and maintain an erection?</strike> -- Thanks aurora_84! I need to find folks that aren't transitory, like the crew of the ships. I need people that can stay around for at least a solid month. I am hoping that if I can get such a list, I can look through Gateworld's database and figure something out.</strike>
-- Thanks malnpudl and sgafan33!

These are the folks I need the stories featuring:

Carson Beckett
Elizabeth Weir
John Sheppard
Teyla Emmagan
Ronon Dex
Chuck the Tech
Peter Grodin
Kate Heightmeyer
Radek Zelenka
Miko (last name assumed to be "Kusanagi")
Katie Brown
Kavanagh
Aiden Ford
Samantha Carter

Any and all help would be appreciated on this. Why didn't anyone ever tell me how much work goes into Nano before you start writing??? Especially if you don't write longer fics, much less use outlines???

</ whining >

Danielle

    <lj:music>Music from the next computer</lj:music>

So LJ decided to ban people from sending them virtual gifts through the better known official comms. They didn't get them all, because I finally got around to using the free dollar they gave out.

Naturally, I sent this gem to lj_feedback.
So, if you haven't checked yet, which you probably haven't because I just did this, I took quite a few names off of my friends list. I based it on whether I could remember the last time I talked to you and the fact that I've pretty much moved over to IJ and only come over here occasionally to scan the flist.

If you want to be readded for friends only entries and such, please let me know and I'll re-friend you ASAP. No hurt feelings were intended, just a minimizing of everything I scan on my pass throughs.

Danielle

P. to the S.: This is like the only time I've gotten to use this icon.
And we're hypocritically together ever after!

    <lj:music>Printer and the AC</lj:music>

Note: Crossposted directly from my IJ

So, I've been thinking about this today and last night about fandom's latest obsession with racism and how it is Evil. (Capital 'e' and everything.) But then I got to thinking about just how hypocritical fandom is at the same time and I had to wonder why do we even take up these causes?

Sometimes it seems like we're emulating everyone's favorite celebrities that pick up a cause to support simply because it's en vogue. This is not to say that there aren't some genuine folks out there, but I find that it sort of burns my biscuit (American biscuit > bun > my buns > my behind) when I see all of these people who've never experienced the type of racism they are speaking so passionately against.

I mean, how would someone who's never been passed over in line for a white person know how that person of color actually feels? Sure, you can guess at it, but that doesn't mean you really understand. And it's not just the whole Nameless Person of Color-Nameless White Person angle either. We can go the Indian caste system route of discussion.

Most of us are familiar with the Untouchables and can guess at what their existence must be like, but I myself will never know what it is to be at the absolute bottom of Society's ladder. This isn't to say that I am Up There, but I can at least walk into most places of business and be served or not have people feel the need to cleanse themselves after coming into contact with me. And of course, I am referring to a wider scale of folk, because I am sure there are some people who would feel this way about me.

So when the issue of all of this touting of Understanding and Acceptance comes up, what weight does it really hold? For a stretch there, everyone seemed to be all over this racism business, but would cry bloody murder if someone ever nudged them to say that something they may have said or written was offensive. Where is the ability to step back and write reflective meta then; when a situation that truly calls for sincere thought has arrived? Where is the moment where the person doesn't simply jump to the defensive and have all of their fangirls swoop in and attack?

From what I've seen thus far, this moment is still being anticipated. At least by me.

So far, on the one occasion where I did have something truly offensive come up in fiction, all I got back basically boiled down to was: "OMG! Leave my friend alone, because we totally aren't racist! And, that was funny!"

Was that what was said exactly? No? But did the comments basically amount to that? Yes.

I wrote one opinion and I stressed that opinions are going to differ. The conversations gained some heat, but I don't remember them exploding into a super nova of wank. Not that I am trying to prod it into such months later. No, I'm finally putting down the thoughts I had when I saw all of that Blog Against Racism flooding my friends lists.

And don't get me wrong, I definitely think that that was the right idea, but we do have to ask ourselves, are we truly being faithful to the swill we're dishing out? Or, are we simply writing about a so-called "hot button" issue to gain fandom notoriety? After all, we all know that the fastest ways to gain popularity in fandom are the following: write something controversial and have it circulate, write Great! pr0n featuring the fandom's top OTP, be completely wanktastic in every single way.

You could also be nice and just make a general contribution to fandom and that'll gain you many a pal, but I said the fastest ways, not the most sane and reliable ones.

So, after all of my babble, I have to wonder in this complex world of relationships that can depend on the balance of "OMG! You post too much boring crap in your journal! *defriends*" and "You write the bestest pr0n eva’! *friends*", how much sincerity really exists out there. I know that it's out there on the web and at those wonderful conventions I always read about, but there is a whole load of fake folks moving within these same circles.

I myself have run into various people that play the part of friend just long enough until they qualify as a BNF and run off to be embraced solely by their fangirls. And no, this is not the cue for anyone to start yet another BNF wank. <strike>That's next week, dammit. You've got to leave us something to do.</strike> All the while they were filled with "I love you"s and *hugs* and *glomps* aplenty, they were more concerned about how many comments their fics got and pouting about the instances when they didn't receive enough comments to satisfy their growing egos.

Truth be told, I hardly ever receive comments on my fiction. Am I bothered enough by this to write entries about not getting reviews? No. Will I celebrate a pat on the back? Of course! But I don't make a big deal about feedback not being everything and then not following through on not throwing a hissy fit when I don't receive any. So when I see the same things happening with circles that supposedly celebrate differences, be they of opinions or skin color, backtrack on their haughty sermons, I end up disappointed and a little sad that some people will never get it.

And most of all, I find myself wanting to see more people of color actually writing posts about racism and how it has effected them. I love those posts, because I can connect with everything they've said. They actually have an insider's view, like myself, and know what they're talking about, instead of spouting naïve ideals about the way the world really should be.

I know that The Angry Black Woman has written wonderful posts that I nod along with all the way through. Hell, I found one of my favorite Jalabert posts last year (I think) and agreed wholeheartedly. (Her post from this year is excellent and true as well!)

At this point, I usually sigh to myself and move on, because what's the point? Those same people blogging away will simply jump down my throat the moment I tap them and inform them of incorrect information. After all, a person will do what they want, no matter what is said or done to them; since, nothing and no one can tell a person who is convinced that they are right any different.

That thought right there makes me kind of sad.

I need to crosspost this to LJ.

Danielle

Started: 1:09 P.M.

ETA: Apparently, I wasn't clear enough in my post, because I was going with the train of thought in my head, instead of thinking about how everything would be interpretted by someone else.

I should have said that the Blog Against Racism isn't where I saw the majority of the fakeness that got me thinking. It was just what reminded me of the huge SGA race wank a while back. The blogging just happened to come along, too, which definitely made me think that it was just going to be more of the posts I read.

I really should go add this edit to my IJ post.
