Before Tegan McFarland grew up to become a Forensic Entomologist, she was solving crimes in her small southern home town in North Carolina.

Eight-year-old Tegan follows flies to a "blob" in the woods and discovers something dead. As she's about to find out what it is, her teacher calls her back to the playground and scolds her. Tegan can't stand not knowing. 

After school she drags her best friend back to the creek in the woods to investigate. A few flies remain but the blob is gone. Following footprints and drag marks through the woods, they overhear an argument between two men and witness the blob being disposed of. Afraid to admit what they've seen, the children make a pact not to.
