Lubricus Reunion is Postponed

Towards the beginning of 2019, the Con Com convened to start concocting what many Lubricus attendees have been asking for on a regular basis: a Lubricus Reunion Con. We originally planned for this convention to happen in October 2020. In March of 2020, we decided to postpone the convention until 2021 given the uncertainty around the spread of COVID-19 and anxiety about the US election. Meanwhile, many con attendees were feeling increasingly disenfranchised by JK Rowling’s transphobic tirades in the media. In February 2021, although we now have “adults in the room at the White House” and COVID vaccine on the horizon, the future is still uncertain. Many con attendees may not be able to attend a Fall of 2021 con due to health conditions and/or economic uncertainty as a result of the pandemic. In order to address the needs of those attendees and uphold our values of safety and inclusivity, we will be postponing the Lubricus Reunion indefinitely.

We’ve made this decision with a heavy heart primarily because we want all Lubricus attendees to feel and be safe at our events. In addition, we also acknowledge that attending fan conventions might be an expense that becomes lower priority during times of financial stress. Luckily, we were able to renegotiate with the hotel and should be in a strong financial position to host a convention once it’s safe and possible for everyone. Further, postponing the convention gives us time to think creatively about how to make the convention a safe and healing space for trans attendees and allies who feel triggered by current events.

For those who have already purchased registrations for 2021, we will be refunding 100% of your registration price between now and March 1, 2021. If you don’t see a refund by that date, please send us a note at at registration@bf4f.org. If we don’t hear from you, we will assume that you’ve received your refund.

Like many fans around the world, the Lubricus Con Com is sheltering in place experiencing this weird new reality that COVID-19 has brought upon us. Self care is extremely important during times like this and in addition to taking long bubble baths and snuggling with our pets, we’re also reading fic! Lubricus and Current Events (Covid-19)

Lubricus is still on: The Lubricus Con Com has discussed the current events and is monitoring the situation carefully. At this time we have no plans to cancel or postpone our October 2020 event and are monitoring the situation as it develops.

Social Distancing: Many people are reporting positive aspects of quarantine and social distancing, even as some suffer hardships in employment and cancellations costs. But staying home can be very relaxing, and the best thing about being in a fandom is that there is a lot of amazing content out there to keep one's attention for long periods. Perhaps now is the time to re-read that epic Snarry from 2009, or to catch up on those fanvids you've been saving on your Watch Later list on Youtube. Meaning to catch up or get familiar with a new fandom via Netflix? Now is your chance.

Self-Care: Remember self care during this time: Get out into the fresh air away from crowds. Exercise or stretch if you can. Eat fresh food wherever possible. Spring clean. Don't forget to take a break between online or TV content, or turn it right off if it's causing you anxiety. Facetime, Google chat or Zoom Cconference friends and family.

Why Lubricus?

It’s still early in 2020 so there’s time to properly allocate your convention budget and set aside some funds for Lubricus 2020. But with so many different social media outlets for fandom and so many different conventions happening all over the world what sets Lubricus apart? Here are a few qualities about our little con that make us special…

Lubricus is by fans for fans: The Lubricus Con Com is made up of real-life slash fans who have found themselves craving more slashy content at the mainstream HP conventions. They’ve put on two successful Harry Potter versions of Lubricus and are excited to join forces again in 2020 to host this multifandom iteration of Lubricus.

Lubricus is affordable: We offer several different types of tickets for Lubricus 2020 with the cheapest version (Get Your Rocks Off) providing admission to all Lubricus programming, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast for just $140. The con rate at the hotel is just $149 per night for a standard room for up to two people; the rate is an extra $10 for a third or fourth person in a room. And on top of that, Portland doesn’t have sales tax!

Lubricus is intimate and friendly: The previous Lubricus conventions had under 100 attendees each, which provides enough people to have a good time, but not so many that introverts end up feeling completely overwhelmed and end up hiding in their hotel rooms. Many people attending Lubricus have known each other for years, but we’ve always welcomed new faces at cons. If you like slash, we like you.

Lubricus has a Common Room: Inspired by the lounge spaces at Hogwarts, Lubricus provides a chill hang out space for congoers to chat, drabble, craft, and just hang out. We decorate the space to be cozy and fannish so that it can be both energizing and relaxing at the same time.

Lubricus has a Blue Ball: The Blue Balls' of previous cons have been a night for congoers to dress up, dress down, dance, eat, enjoy vids and fannish company during an evening of supreme fun. And we always have themed drinks! This year's Blue Ball will be no different and if you need an extra excuse to dress up, it takes place on Halloween.

Registration for Lubricus 2020 opens on February 1 and we have lots of options to choose from. Here is an overview of what’s available…

Get Your Rocks Off ($140): This is a Basic Registration. Includes admission to all Lubricus programming, the arts & crafts fair, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast.

Lend a Helping Hand ($175): This is a Sponsorship Registration No pillow princexes here - you want to help others reach their bliss by contributing an extra $35 toward our scholarship fund, so we can provide reduced-cost registrations to those who need financial assistance. Your registration includes admission to all Lubricus programming, the arts & crafts fair, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast.

BDE (Big Donor Energy ($250): This is an Investor Registration. Like the Malfoys, you’re willing and able to provide financial support for a great cause. By purchasing this level of registration, you're helping us keep costs down for the Basic Registration, so our con is as accessible as possible for slash lovers of all means! This registration includes admission to all Lubricus programming, the arts & crafts fair, the Blue Ball, and the Morning After Breakfast.

No Strings Attached ($25): This is a Non-Attending Registration. You won’t be attending Lubricus, but you still want to show some love! Like the Hogwarts ghosts, you’ll be with us in spirit.

One Night Stand ($25): This is a ticket for admission ONLY to the Blue Ball on October 31, 2020. Dust off your dress robes and get ready for the HOTTEST Halloween party in town. These tickets can be purchased alone at any time, or as an add-on when you purchase any of the registrations listed below. Bring your friends, enemies, rivals, crushes, partners, favorite Quidditch star, etc. There will be a cash bar at the Ball where you can purchase drink tickets.

Professor Snape is not pleased, but the slashy gang who brought you Lubricus in 2011 and 2012 is back and better than ever! Lubricus 2020: The Reunion will be a slash-filled weekend chock full of squee, old friends and new, smut, arts/crafts, food, dancing, and so much more! Programming is entirely attendee-driven, so that means you get to decide what kind of content you want to have at the con. Here are the key details you need to know…

What is this con all about?

The Con That Shall Not Be Named (aka Lubricus) is a fan-inspired and fan-run wizarding slash convention presented by By Fans 4 Fans. PET PEEVE TIME!

Recently, I've noticed an upsurge of a few pet peeves in fanfic. Is it the fandoms I'm in or is it indicative of the new/young writers on the block? I don't know and I don't care, I fucking hate it, anyways.

Pet Peeve #1: no-caps writing, but otherwise grammatically correct. this means that the writer is avoiding caps specifically as a style, not because of laziness, i.e. sms text writing. ao3 even has a tag for it: lowercase. (see what i've done here?) HATE HATE HATE. ARGH, WHY?

Pet Peeve #2: Speaking of tags: excessive tagging. This one has long been a pet peeve and I've complained about it before. But my mother always said, "The best defence is a good offence."...or was it, "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts." In any event, this must be dealt with before the tags themselves become stand-alone fics.

In the beginning, there was author-notes. Some authors had the most amusing notes and summary blurbs and warnings that were almost as entertaining as the story, itself. Eventually those morphed into tags (on social media, on LJ, on AO3), ostensibly for "search use".

But now, particularly with unseasoned authors (who perhaps don't recall a time when there were NO tags, no spoilers and no reason to put #cuddling and snuggling, & #i warned you all, or #insinuated smut, or #some characters only make a cameo), they are useless, superfluous, annoying, spoilerish, tired, trite, and so unfunny they likely prevent many folks from clicking on a story even with a good summary. ARGH. Yup, still mad.

I beg you to go back to your fics and clean up your tags.

Every so often I come around to LJ, go through birthday notifs, etc, glance about. There's still folks here - some hardcore cross-posters (i see you, ladies) who did not abandon LJ or DW for tumblr/twit, etc.

Reading all these user names on the birthday lists are giving me a million feels.

I miss you all.

I miss the conversations, moments and interactions that we had, even the heated, ridiculous ones

I miss the art and the fic and the participation we all entered into to make this a living, breathing place

I miss knowing how you are all doing in your lives; the good, the bad and the ugly

I miss seeing many of you IRL regularly at cons, though I am lucky to have some RL fen friends locally. Some of you became like family to me.

I miss you. I hope you are all well, or coping well when life hits you hard, as the case may be - life has a way of kicking your ass, I know.

I hope you have the opportunity and the inspiration to still be creative and responsive and happy in a fan environment, somewhere, with like-minded, awesome individuals.

So it turns out that the @ livejournal email addys are not working for "some" folks.

Notifications appear to be coming in, my email works no problem, but the forwarding service is fucked.

ANNOUNCING 2014 HP Reunion Mini Snarry Games!

After being approached by the mods at the hp_reunion to help with their project, the snarry_games Mod Squad decided that 5 years was a long enough vacation!

We decided to celebrate and promote what the HP LJ Reunion is planning, which mirrors that which the snarry_games has always stood for, community and teamwork, so we threw our hat in the ring.

This is our contribution to the reunion plans, to get as many of the HP Snarry fen together again, and invite new friends to join us in celebrating not just Harry Potter and Severus Snape, but also the Livejournal community that spawned all the amazing creativity and production that the Harry Potter Fandom is famous for; something which no other fandom has yet been able to match.

WHO CAN PLAY:

For the first time ever, the snarry_games welcomes anyone who wishes to compete (over the age of 18 years).

There will be NO sign-ups, and no teams; however, duo/pair collaborations are allowed.

There is a maximum of two (2) entries allowed per participant (person or duo/collaborators)

WHAT IS THE FORMAT FOR THIS COMPETITION? :

There will be four (4) categories to compete in, and each category will be judged by a single poll:

DRABBLES : 100 words per drabble, max of 10 drabbles per entry (1000 words max) .

FICLETS: Mini-fic from 500 to 2000 words max; poetry and filk acceptable for this category.

FICTION: Story from 2000 words and up (no limit). Story can include original art/fanvid done for this competition (see collaborations).

ART: All types/forms of original art accepted. Fanvids are allowed (see fair use). NO: manips (of other's works/or photos), no playlists (songlists).

WHAT ABOUT PROMPTS?

There is but two prompts to choose from (we’re pretty sure everyone can make this work):

1) REUNION
2) REUNITED

FAQs/ and RULES:

GENRES: All genres are allowed, including fusion/crossovers, as long as it features Severus Snape and Harry Potter!

RATINGS: G - NC17! All ratings allowed – explicit content can be locked at the Games Community at entrant’s request, or age restricted at AO3.

WARNINGS: The snarry_games uses invisible warnings, and standard headers*. Entrants can warn for anything they wish using this format. Due to the legal implications of chan (shota/underage) to many members, the snarry_games community will NOT ACCEPT chan explicitly depicting anyone under the age of 18 years in sexual situations.

POLLS: Anyone can vote, including entrants/participants. There will be four (4) Master polls, one for each category, and each poll will ask the judges which entry was the best and/or their favourite. There will be only one answer allowed (radio buttons). The top two entries in each category will be the Gold and Silver Medalists for the 2014 Snarry Mini Games!

WHERE WILL THE POSTING BE?

This Mini Games was inspired by and is running concurrently with the Livejournal Harry Potter Reunion Community, in order to promote and stimulate HP LJ connections and community once more. Therefore, this time, we ask that entrants post their own entries.

Each entry is to be posted on YOUR Livejournal if possible (or IJ, DW, Tumblr or even your own website/archive, as long as it is publically accessible for voting/polling purposes.)

Once again, another fail!year for me + fandom. I've finally gotten the hang of Tumblr, and I find it very distracting with teh pretteh, but do not use it hardly at all to communicate. I miss all you guys like burning.

I've noticed live/dream/insane journal are very dead save for a small handful of the most diligent of posters, who tend to crosspost to all three, anyways. The newsletters for the fandoms I am reading (not participating in, woes) seem active, such as Supernatural (more on that later). Idek.

That said, congrats to the gang who won GISHWHES, who include Tripper, Dacro and Chaeche, all dear fandom friends who kick ass. You guys (Vatican Cameos) are AWESOME!!

I became a Graunty this year, my oldest niece had a baby boy in July. Then my younger brother and his GF had a baby girl a month later, so we're rolling in the adorable over here.

2012 was a very busy year for concerts/shows for me, but 2013 was significantly more low-key, mostly reunion tours plus a couple bucket-list, last time to see us before we die!shows:

Wierd Al Yankovic :D - first time he's been here in nearly a decade. Highlight: "White and Nerdy"
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Bucket List! Highlight: "Turn the Page" (original saxophonist!)
Prince & 3rd Eye Girl - I saw his last show in 2011, but this show was a unique small club show he did, stripped down set in 7 select cities. Highlight: too many to mention, but the guitar solos were friggin awesome.

Hall & Oates - bucket list! Highlight: "You Make My Dreams"
Marilyn Manson - Highlight: "The New Shit"
Black Sabbath - 2 shows, Vancouver and the Gorge, Washington: Highlight: "Behind the Wall of Sleep" and "Children of the Grave"
P!nk Truth About Love Tour - highlight: "So What?" Encore.

Actually, now that I look at it, it seems like a lot more than I thought. LOL. I have tickets (so far!) to two shows for 2014: Blue Rodeo (tomorrow night), Sting and Paul Simon (Bucket list!), and they've just opened a new Hard Rock Casino here in Vancouver, so more shows are a-comin, yay! It's my joy in life, concerts.

All right, all right, enough talk, I know what you all want. LOL.

It’s that time, again! Every year for Christmas, I choose a 'theme' for wrapping. This year, I chose to recycle using only stuff I already had, I did not buy anything new! I am ridiculously proud I didn't go anywhere near Michael's Craft Store in December. *puffs up*

The workstation, aka "The Hurricane". The roommate put the leaf in for me so I would make less of a mess.
It sort of worked (kept it on the table instead of the floor, at least) so I will do the same from now on.

Gift Cards are the new black. Doesn't make a difference to me, I just make smaller packages. *smirk* Here is a small gift box made for jewellery or gift cards that I wrapped for my brother's girlfriend. I made the lid removable so the card could be stuffed in at the last minute.

Then the base. I had fun this year with garland beads.

More detail - you can really load it on smaller gifts, I think. There is no "too much". :D

Anything with feathers must be hidden lest my cat, Max, get his crazy paws on it. This box was out only briefly, it was for a friend who lives out of town, so it wasn't in the house long. Lucky for it.

Things are starting to look shiny. I didn't have a bow that was large enough for what I wanted, so I made one out of the silver paper I'd been using. It worked out great, I'll be doing that again!
