Dixie Technical College’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A program prepares students for success in the trucking industry. With a blend of hands-on driver training and in-depth classroom instruction, students gain the skills needed to operate Class A Truck/Trailer vehicles safely, legally, and professionally. Graduates are prepared to pass the Utah State CDL Skills Test and launch careers in industries like logistics, freight, construction, and long-haul transportation.

 As a student of this program, you will:

    • Learn proper trailer hook-up and unhooking procedures
    • Understand how to safely operate vehicle control systems
    • Master gear shifting techniques like double clutching and floating gears
    • Practice real world maneuvers including backing and turning
    • Build confidence with supervised on road driving in a Class A commercial vehicle

Commercial Driver’s License Class A

Program Description

The Commercial Driver’s License Class A program prepares students with the skills and knowledge they need to join the professional driving industry. This course fulfills Entry Level Driver Training requirements for CDL training in accordance with Part 380 of the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations.

Attendance Standard: This program has a minimum attendance standard of 80%.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate basic truck operating procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe operating procedures.
  • Learn and practice advanced operating procedures.
  • Practice vehicle inspections (pre/post-trip).
  • Review non-driving activities.

Provide a copy of one of the following: High School Diploma, High School Transcript showing graduation date, GED, Associate’s Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree. If an applicant does not have one of the above they can provide a copy of their CDL learner’s permit to satisfy the education verification requirement.

Cody enjoys camping with his family and tinkering with gadgets. With a diverse background in farming, construction, mechanics, trucking, and education he’s prepared to help students become experienced truck drivers. Cody says, “driving truck is a fun, meaningful, and lucrative career.”

Heber Holm

Heber Holm

Heber Holm studied at BYU and Dixie College. He owned a construction company for 25 years before becoming co-owner of HD Trucking. Heber also worked as a field manager for Trade Star LLC, providing oil field trucking and logistics with over 40 trucks. He then joined Dixie Tech in 2019.

With a lifetime of experience operating machinery and 40 years of commercial driving, Steve brings real-world skills to Dixie Tech’s hands-on CDL program. His passion is welcoming new drivers and using Dixie Tech’s trucks as interactive classrooms to tailor education to professional CDL goals.
