Is art political? Yes. yes. it is
Yesterday was fun, because it was about me, me and me!
First--off: Francois Truffaut documentary at the KLPac. It was located at a large sprawling park, somewhat secluded. Amazing building, amazing scenery. Loved it XD
I was late. I seated myself in the small theater room about 15 minutes into the documentary. Truffaut was talking about the women in his life, how they influenced his filmmaking. There were archived footages of Deneuve, young, soft-skinned, splendid, just walking around, talking to Truffaut, laughing, goofing off. The eternal fangirl that I am, I couldn't take my eyes off her.
There was a part where Deneuve recited the opening script of The Last Metro, one of my favorite movies of all time, EVER. Hearing her recite the opening passage - twenty five years later after it was made - gave me the chills. I had to take a deep breath to calm myself down.
It took me 10 minutes to walk out to the main road because the place was so large. The weather was hot but I didn't mind.
Then I rushed to the Central Market by cab. There was a 2-day event called ArtsForGrabs, featuring among others, academic talks (including one on woman as a symbol of colonialism - but I didn't go to that one) and many, many books by independent retailers. I arrived just in time for the last event: Reading Lolita in KL organized by the NGO xxx. Named after Azar Nafisi's novel Reading Lolita in Tehran which was about the subversive act of reading, the event had many people in the intellectual/activist/entertainment circle reading a series of banned publications in Malaysia.
MM, the daughter of the ex-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad was one of them. Her voice was sweet and soft that I didn't notice it was her at first (the reading was held in a darkened room).
After that ended, I hung around. Someone from an NGO asked if I was from xyz ((ah to be mistaken as a lawyer - very flattering) while another woman asked if I had a company (businesswomen ftw!). I said no, I don't have a card., I'm just a student XD
Then it was rush, rush back home by 7 pm.
