Modernizing a Legacy of Ideas
The Independent Institute is a non-profit, non-partisan public policy research organization that has been a respected voice for over 30 years. It produces books, articles, reports, and multimedia on issues such as economic policy, civil liberties, foreign affairs, healthcare, and education, drawing on the expertise of both in-house scholars and leading experts worldwide.

Challenges
The Independent Institute’s needs were both technical and strategic:
Massive Content Migration
Thousands of pieces of content dating back decades were spread across multiple sites. The project required consolidating everything into one centralized hub. CSVs with complex metadata, painstakingly organized in collaboration with the client, were used to structure the migration.
A Modern Yet Respectful Redesign
The new site needed to feel fresh, engaging, and highly visual while honoring the organization’s legacy brand and the gravity of the political and policy issues it addresses.
Sophisticated Content Organization
Users needed intuitive ways to browse and filter content by research centers, subject priorities, authors, and publication types. On some pages, content had to appear in specific orders, such as newest book releases first, followed by alphabetized listings.
Improved User Journey
The old site was text-heavy and overwhelming. The new design needed to provide clarity, visual hierarchy, and easy navigation for audiences ranging from policymakers to the general public.
SEO Optimization for Content Discoverability
With decades of valuable content, the new site needed to ensure maximum visibility in search engines. This required a strategic SEO approach including metadata structuring, URL optimization, keyword strategy, and internal linking to drive traffic and improve ranking for relevant policy and political topics.
Before

Our Approach
We began with a deep discovery process, understanding not just the site’s technical needs, but the goals of the organization and the way their audiences consume information. From there, our team:
Designed a Clean, Modern Interface
Respecting the Institute’s established identity while introducing a more contemporary layout, high-quality imagery, and visual storytelling to make complex ideas more accessible.
Executed a Complex Content Migration
Consolidated decades of work from multiple domains into a single, well-structured platform, ensuring nothing was lost in the process.
Built Powerful Filtering & Organization Tools
Implemented custom categorization, sorting, and filtering functionality to help users easily access the exact content they need, whether that’s a newly released book, a decades-old research paper, or an article on a specific policy topic.
Optimized for SEO & Accessibility
Enhanced metadata, site architecture, and internal linking for better search visibility, while ensuring compliance with accessibility standards for a broader audience reach.
Enhanced Mobile Experience
Created a responsive design so that policymakers, journalists, and researchers could easily engage with content on any device.
Extended the Redesign to Their Spanish-Language Site
Applied the same design principles to a smaller Spanish version of the site, ensuring brand consistency and accessibility for Spanish-speaking audiences.
After
