Online diary
Write freely.
Share selectively.
A home for personal writing, as private or public as you choose. Clear your head, keep a record of your life, and share only what you want to share.
Why write
A place to clear your head.
Some thoughts are easier to understand once you write them down.
-
Think without performing
No likes, no algorithm, no pressure to turn your life into content.
-
Notice patterns over time
Writing regularly can help you see what keeps coming up, what is changing, and what you want to pay attention to.
-
Say the thing somewhere
Sometimes the benefit is simply having a place to put the thought, instead of carrying it around all day.
Want the most distraction-free, minimalist experience?
Diaryland's new Focus Mode strips out all the social/community features from the site. No buddy lists, no comments, no notes, no DMs, just writing for yourself.
When you select Focus Mode when creating a diary, we'll set every setting to the most private option, and you'll have a minimal, stripped-back, greyscale, monotone interface.
This is the calmest, least distracting writing tool we could imagine, and aims to be the closest thing to a paper notebook that a website can provide.
Our promise
We will never do anything weird with your writing.
Diaryland has been around since 1999. We're independent, we're small, and we want to be the diary site you can actually trust with your real thoughts.
- We never sell your data. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone. There is no version of Diaryland where your diary gets sold.
- We never train AI on your diary. Your entries are not used to train language models, ours or anyone else's. We block AI scrapers on private content and respect opt-outs everywhere we can.
- No third-party tracking or ad networks. No Facebook pixel, no ad networks profiling your readers, no surveillance scripts loaded on your diary page.
- We don't read your private entries. Private means private. Staff do not browse user diaries for entertainment. We only access content when a user asks for help or when legally required.
- Your writing is yours. Export it anytime. You can take your full diary with you in standard formats whenever you like. Account deletion is real deletion, not a soft hide.
- Public, private, or somewhere in between. Your call. Write openly for the world, keep everything to yourself, or share with a handful of readers you choose. None of these costs more than another.
How privacy works
You decide who sees what.
Privacy here is really just two simple layers. Once they click, nothing about your diary is a surprise.
-
Your whole diary
Open, closed, or somewhere in between.
Leave your diary open for anyone to read, keep it just for you, or let a handful of readers you choose see it. One setting covers the whole thing at once.
-
Any single entry
Keep individual moments to yourself.
Whatever the rest of your diary is set to, you can mark any entry private, visible only to you. A private entry stays hidden even from readers you've invited in.
Yours first
It can be just for you.
Plenty of people use Diaryland as a private journal and nothing more, somewhere to think out loud, vent after a long day, or keep a therapeutic daily journal that no one else ever reads. That is a complete way to use it, and it always will be.
If you ever do want readers, there's a community here too. People have been writing on Diaryland since 1999. Some share with a few close friends, some write openly for strangers who become regulars, and plenty just like reading along quietly.
A quiet place that's been online longer than most of the internet.
Privacy dashboard
Check your privacy at a glance.
Every diary comes with one page that reads back, in plain English, exactly who can see what. No guessing, no buried toggles.

-

- Can I import or export my entries?
- Yes, there is a button right in the dashboard to download all of your entries in one big file (.txt or Markdown).
