Inspiration
The world is facing the threat of global warming and ever-rising carbon emissions. The use of cars in cities contribute heavily to this problem. City design makes traveling by car heavily inefficient and less environmentally friendly compared to modes like walking, biking, and public transportation. Our goal is to reduce carbon emissions while connecting people to their cities and the sustainable brands and products they know and love.
What it does
Zuri aims to empower sustainability-focused transportation by incentivizing our users to choose travel options that have reduced carbon emissions. Users are able to see and learn about nearby recreational areas and landmarks based on their current location, evaluate the estimated carbon emission costs for various forms of transportation, and receive points for opting for more environmentally-friendly modes. These points can be used to buy products from local and sustainable brands.
How we built it
Zuri was built using React to create a dynamic and user-friendly front end, which was supported by a Python backend and connected using the Fast API. We used the Google Places and Destinations API to gather data on nearby locations and calculate the distance necessary to travel between destinations. A Wikipedia scraper and our custom OpenAI assistant allows users to see relevant information about all the the destinations near them.
What's next for Zuri
To create a further incentive for our users, we want to integrate a blockchain as our reward for user's sustainable behavior and choice. We believe this would be an exciting challenge, and we can't wait to continue improving Zuri.
