Inspiration
My teammate and I have always been avid fans of the iconic Zombie Mode in Call of Duty: World at War. Captivated by the thrill and the strategic gameplay it offers, we aimed to capture that essence and excitement. With a shared passion for this genre, we decided to re-envision the experience in a 2D format, combining the classic survival elements with a fresh perspective. Our aspiration is to create a game that pays homage to the classic we adore while offering a unique twist that's both familiar and new to fans of the survival zombie genre.
What it does
In "Z-Factor: Survival", an experimental virus has breached containment in the icy expanse of Antarctica, setting off a catastrophic chain reaction. Initially targeting wildlife, the pathogen has mutated, now transforming humans into voracious undead. Isolated from civilization, you embody humanity's final sentinel in a chilling fight for survival. Navigate the relentless onslaught, harness the desolate environment, and outwit the encroaching doom to endure the apocalypse. Can you withstand the frozen fury and stem the tide of the undead? Your survival is the last stand against the extinction of humankind.
How we built it
Our journey in bringing this project to life began with Unity, a powerful and versatile game development platform that perfectly suited our vision. We dove into the world of C# programming, meticulously crafting and coding each element and asset to create a cohesive and engaging gameplay experience.
To enhance the visual appeal and authenticity of our game, we sourced a variety of assets and skins from platforms like itch.io and the Unity Asset Store, carefully selecting each component to align with our thematic vision.
Our development process was methodical and driven by creativity. It started with an intensive brainstorming session, where ideas were freely exchanged and the concept of the game began to take shape. We then shifted our focus to defining what a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) for our game would look like. This step was crucial, as it helped us identify the core features that were essential to the game's functionality and player experience.
With a clear MVP in mind, we embarked on the actual development phase, transforming our conceptual ideas into a tangible, playable game. Our journey was marked by a blend of technical skill, artistic vision, and a deep-seated passion for gaming, particularly in the survival zombie genre, which has inspired us throughout this project.
Challenges we ran into
Embarking on this project with Unity, a platform new to us, presented a set of unique challenges. One of the initial hurdles we faced was familiarizing ourselves with the intricacies of Unity's environment. Navigating through its comprehensive features and tools was a learning curve that required patience and persistence.
Another significant challenge we encountered was in the gameplay development, particularly in devising the logic for spawning new zombies. As beginners, conceptualizing and implementing a spawning mechanism that felt natural and balanced in the game's context was a daunting task. We spent considerable time brainstorming and experimenting with various approaches.
Ultimately, through dedicated problem-solving and a willingness to learn from each trial, we crafted a viable solution. This breakthrough was a pivotal moment in our development process, allowing us to move forward and complete our project within the planned timeline.
Our journey through these challenges not only led to the successful creation of our game but also contributed immensely to our growth as game developers. We emerged from this experience with a deeper understanding of game development and a reinforced confidence in our ability to tackle complex problems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating this game stands as a monumental achievement for us, especially considering it was our inaugural venture into the realm of game development. The entire journey, from conceptualization to execution, was completed within a span of just 24 hours - a feat we hold in high regard.
Our pride stems not just from the completion of the game itself but also from the steep learning curve we navigated in mastering Unity. As beginners in game development, the process of understanding and utilizing a complex platform like Unity was both challenging and exhilarating. The experience provided us with invaluable insights into the intricacies of game design and development.
Seeing our ideas come to life in the form of a functional game was incredibly rewarding. It was a testament to our dedication, our ability to rapidly acquire new skills, and our commitment to bringing our vision to fruition. This project was more than just a game development exercise; it was a journey of growth, learning, and discovery that we will always cherish.
What's next for Z-Factor: Survival
What's Important Next for the Game:
While our initial release focused on creating a core gameplay experience within a tight timeframe, there are several exciting features and enhancements we have planned for the future development of "Z-Factor: Survival." Our roadmap includes:
Enhanced Start Experience: We plan to introduce a comprehensive intro page featuring home screen options, character selection, and instructions to provide players with a more engaging start to their gaming experience.
Intro Cutscene: Integrating an introductory cutscene is on our agenda. This will set the stage for the game, providing context and enhancing the narrative experience.
Diverse Zombie Types: We're excited to diversify the types of zombies encountered in the game. This includes introducing stronger zombies and those with unique abilities, such as shooting acid, to add variety and challenge to the gameplay.
Rich Sound Effects: To create a more immersive and dynamic gaming atmosphere, we will be incorporating sound effects for various game actions, enhancing the overall sensory experience.
Expanded Loot System: We plan to refine the loot system. When zombies are defeated, they may drop not just medikits but also other items like in-game currency, bombs, etc. The bombs, for instance, can be used strategically to eliminate multiple zombies within a certain radius, adding a layer of tactical depth to the game.
Item and Power-Up Integration: Introducing a variety of items and power-ups will provide players with more strategic options and ways to interact with the game world.
Expanded Arsenal and Weapon Mechanics: A key enhancement we're enthusiastic about is the expansion of the game's weaponry. We plan to introduce a diverse range of firearms, including assault rifles, snipers, shotguns, and more, each with unique mechanics and tactical advantages.
Continuous Content Updates: We aim to keep the game fresh and exciting by regularly adding new content, features, and enhancements based on player feedback and our creative vision.
Balancing and Polishing: Continuous balancing of game mechanics, based on player feedback and our observations, will be crucial to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience.
Our vision for "Z-Factor: Survival" is to not only complete the features we initially envisioned but also to evolve the game based on community engagement and feedback. We believe that these additions and improvements will significantly enhance the gameplay experience, making it richer, more diverse, and more enjoyable for our players.
