Inspiration
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the emergence of online classes that often limit social interaction and creative ideas. In times like these, making learning fun and interactive is essential for longer retention of information. Revision is a significant part of the learning process as it helps reflect on the material covered which thereby increases confidence levels prior to critical examinations. Hence we present ROYO - Revise On Your Own! ROYO provides a platform to gamify education and make learning fun and effortless. The key features of the application include customizable flashcards with tools like voice to text conversions, inserting images, experimenting with fun colors, sharing and downloading flashcards. ROYO makes learners self-sufficient as it provides games and quizzes integrated with flashcards to make revision engaging without the need of another individual. Additionally, the rewards from successful quizzes unlock new milestones which provide XP to increase leaderboard rankings which thereby helps in maintaining a competitive spirit among learners on both global and local levels.
What it does
ROYO is a platform to make learning and revision fun! It provides the users with options to revise by themselves, yet share the learning experience remotely with other learners. Sign up on ROYO using your credentials or Gmail account. Once you are logged in, select an avatar and get started on learning! Create flashcards using the wide arena of tools like the voice to text options, inserting images and customizable font options, experiment with fun colors and, share or download the flashcards. You are rewarded with experience (XP) by completing the delegated tasks and gain rewards by reaching new milestones. Once you have curated a set of flashcards, you have an option to take a quiz to test your understanding. The quiz provides both written and speech input options for answers. Moreover, ROYO provides immediate feedback on the answers entered and provides options to gets hints or mnemonic devices. Mnemonics help in longer retention of the material and enable faster recollection. Upon completion of the quiz, you are rewarded XP and badges which help you climb in ranks on the weekly leaderboard positions. You can check your global and local rankings along with competing with friends on the leaderboards by participating in quiz trivia. Another key feature is the mind map generator, which simplifies complicated information to visual data thereby helping in quick and efficient revisions prior to examinations. Finally, the remainders tab shows weekly progress, the completed and incomplete tasks along with the designated time intervals. The application also inculcates the Pomodoro technique by giving 5-minute breaks in 25-minute intervals for a more focused attention span and longer retention rates.
How we built it:
We started off with an active brainstorm session regarding what we should work on, using discord, google meet, and google jam board to collaborate and came up with an idea of developing an "effective revision tool through gamification". We have discussed that the concept, the design, and socializing are the features of a game that will affect the most. Following this shared vision, we started developing a prototype in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was visualizing and integrating multiple methods of learning into one platform. Our motto for ROYO was to come up with an efficient learning and revision approach that was engaging and fun. It was challenging to inculcate the various customizable tools for making flashcards with options of the quiz trivia and immediate feedback along with hints and mnemonics. Additionally, developing an interface for the mindmap construction and setting up a system of reminders had some obstacles along the way, however, our teamwork and cooperation was one of our biggest strengths. Using effective communication and brainstorming ideas with our team helped us develop the final prototype for ROYO which was the right balance of user input, games and visual representations, and system-generated feedback.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our major achievements included learning a new tool Figma to design our project and collaborating to work on an interesting concept to gamify education. Additionally, designing an innovative idea that enables one to learn things easily and retain things for longer was fascinating. Integrating the features of flashcards, quizzes, generating mind maps, designing mnemonics, community-sharing, rewards to develop a reliable solution was one of the main achievements that our team is proud of.
What we learned
Project Management - Time management and team building.
UI - learned how to use Figma that three of us were unfamiliar with.
Collaboration - networking, challenging ourselves.
Team Management - expressing our thoughts communication, cooperation.
What's next for our project
Our Future goals for ROYO include deploying it to a website or a mobile app for convenient use for people with no access to laptops or computers. This will help reach a wider audience who can enjoy learning in a new, fun, and engaging way. Additionally, we are extremely excited about adding new features and games for participants to compete in real-time. We look forward to improving the existing tools and features in addition to adding new ones.
