Inspiration

While browsing Reddit we saw that many interesting comments receive little to no attention, slipping past the colossal floodgates of the interweb unnoticed. It is in these dark corners of the internet where people show their most sincere emotions. This is why we decided to create a bot to reply to these comments with funny jokes, encouraging and comforting messages to help people keep going, and just to make their day a bit brighter.

What it does

Looks for keywords like happy, sad, bored, anxious or overwhelmed, and reply accordingly with a relevant randomly generated message. It also has a happy face feature where whenever it detects a happy face in a comment, it replies with a happy face.

How we built it

We used the PRAW module (Python Reddit API Wrapper) to have our program communicate with my personal Reddit account, which then mass replies to comments with little attention.

Challenges we ran into

This is the first time both of us have participated in a hackathon, so the whole process was unknown territory for us. It took us a while to get PRAW working, and the environment set up.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Upon initial testing, many people seemed to enjoy our replies! Some of them got a decent amount of upvotes, and some people said that our replies made their day!

What we learned

We learned a lot about APIs and Python modules. We also learned so much from the boot camp sessions!

What's next for Your Friendly Reddit Bot

We'll keep it up and running as best as we can. We like to bring happiness to people.
