Summary
A comfy environment for people of all ages to be gain a worldview perspective of different countries
The goal is to combine the hassle of looking for your destination’s local food, famous monuments, landmarks, and even the date and time. Environments produce a duplicate experience for some of the best monuments and views that are located in countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Mexico. Includes interface features such as the ability to scroll through several different tourist attractions and listen to music originated from the chosen country.
Inspiration
The inspiration from this project came from the simulation ‘Virtual Cottage’, a productivity steam on the STEAM platform.
Virtual Cottage is a simulation that essentially gives users the perspective of a diorama through the interior of a cozy cottage.
Taking inspiration from Virtual Cottage, we implemented a spin off version that allows users to take a trip around the world through each of these environments.
To further enforce the ‘Home Away from Home’ track, we added culturally symbolic music in accordance to the country chosen by the user.
What it does
Explore and View cities/countries with authentic backgrounds, locations, and background music.
How we built it
We utilized pygame, a python sld2 library, to create a gui showcase. Pygame also allowed for music playback and image showcase.
Challenges we ran into
There were several technical and logical obstacles that our team had to face and overcome while developing this project. Combining different aspects of this app was very difficult when finalizing the project was challenging. This problem surrounded trying to put the functions from the drop-down menu together with images and music. A substantial technical issue that we faced was with the functionality of the on and off volume button. The button would not listen to the mouse and would only listened to our arrow keys when the mouse was hovering over the button. A problem that occured while trying to upload images was that a lot of them did not display properly or did not display at all.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a working prototype; that is fully functioning. Cool features:
- Local Time/Date
- Music Player
What we learned
How to inefficient it is to build things from scratch; the window, the images, the audio player.
What's next for Worldview Wanderer
Having an image rotating around the front page of the project, we visualized having the same dynamics as Virtual Cottage, with a dioramic view of a monument. However with time constraints we focused on other aspects of the project, including the music, front page, and the functionality.
- Scalability and scope
- All countries
- UI/UX
- More Locations
- 3D Rendering/View
