Inspiration

Since quarantine has started, our time spent doing outdoor activities has been limited. We have started spending more time staring at screens than ever before! Our bodies need exercise but we tend to overlook it since working from home seems more time-consuming than before. We need a solution that can help us stay active within our current schedule without taking too much time. Since we are cooking more at home, we are constantly on the lookout for more recipe ideas. This is where WorkIt comes in! We are a solution that helps you stay healthy by WORKING IT into your schedule!

What it does

WorkIt helps with the following:

  1. getting quick exercises meeting specific criteria: such as exercises for neck and eye strain relief due to increased screen time caused by COVID situations,
  2. helping women cope with menstrual pain: we suggest exercises that help women throughout their menstrual cycles and that can relieve stress during menstruation,
  3. connecting you with the community: it has been harder to meet new people during COVID, so using our community page you can meet other like-minded people and challenge each other to top the leaderboard,
  4. setting your schedule to get personalized reminders: you can set your daily schedule on your calendar to receive new workouts to your phone through SMS and ensure you never miss a workout,
  5. finding endless new recipes: you can use our recipe generator to enter dietary restrictions and food preferences to find new recipes with only those ingredients.

How we built it

We used Sketch to ideate our UI/UX and create wireframes and final designs for our web application. We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create our web application. We connected the Edamam API to get new recipes every time. We used Twilio to send workout reminders to phones through SMS.

Challenges we ran into

We had some trouble integrating the API to our web application and had to spend more time on that to get them to return information. We could not create a full-fledged community page and feature of adding events to the calendar within the time frame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We completed all the areas we were hoping to complete within the time frame. We got our food generator and Twilio messaging service to work. We were to design the entire website and code it within the time frame.

What we learned

We learned that there are no exercise databases and there is a lack of collected databases for home workouts. We hope to collect enough data to create our own database of exercises and help others by providing all the exercises that could help people in quarantine.

What's next for WorkIt

We hope to continue compiling exercises that can be worked into a busy schedule and provide new workouts to our users. Once our product is complete, we hope to collaborate with workout influencers in an effort to have people stay active. We hope to build an active community of users globally that can encourage each other to WorkIt. We hope to improve the calendar feature so that the users can import their schedules on their own calendars or set their schedules through our app. We hope to add authentication to our app so users can track their workout stats and connect their calendars. We hope to connect wearables into our app where users can track all their daily activity in one place, including active workouts, steps, and get reminders from our app on their wearables! We hope to incorporate music that can be played enjoyed our app or wearables to keep users going!
