Inspiration
When I first discovered the Reddit competition, it immediately caught my attention. Although I am a frontend developer, I chose to use a block format instead of a webview because I wanted to create something that felt more integrated with Reddit, rather than just a simple sub-website. I enjoy playing and creating word games, and my goal was to develop something truly innovative, rather than just another version of Wordle. I recognized that Reddit is an excellent platform for community-driven game level contributions, which inspired me to create a game that combines community level design with word guessing.
What it does
Wordtionary is a unique game that merges drawing, guessing, and word creation.
1. Pixel Drawing:
Players begin by creating a pixel drawing. This pixel pattern is then transformed into a word, which is further broken down into individual letters. To increase the challenge, the letters are shuffled, altering their original positions.
2. Word Puzzle:
In the second phase, players solve the word puzzle. Successfully completing the puzzle reveals the pixel pattern, allowing users to guess what the drawing represents.
How we built it
I utilized Reddit blocks to build the user interface and Redis to store the game state.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge was developing the logic for generating letters from the pixel drawing. I dedicated significant time to writing and refining the code to achieve the current functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I take pride in completing this game and in its creative concept. While it draws inspiration from other popular games, the combination of its elements creates a unique experience.
What we learned
I learned that Reddit can be an excellent platform for games that require community participation. Even simple games can be incredibly fun when they engage users effectively.
What's next for Wordtionary
I discovered this hackathon just one week before the deadline and managed to complete the project in just two days. As it stands, the game is not fully polished, but I plan to continue developing it after the judging phase.
