Inspiration

The concept of using a game to encourage programmers to improve their typing speed may seem like a small idea, but it has the potential to inspire significant progress and growth. It shows that even in the most unexpected places, we can find inspiration to help us achieve our goals. Also, it entertains hackers taking a break from hours of coding.

The obstacles in the game, inspired by a programmer's journey, remind us that the path to success is not always smooth. Bugs represent many issues programmers need to fix. Programmers spend countless hours sitting in chairs in front of screens, but it's important for them to overcome this sedentary lifestyle and take a break to enjoy the outdoors, feeling the fresh green grass beneath their feet. There will be challenges and obstacles along the way, but with perseverance and determination, we can overcome them.

Furthermore, the fact that the game is inspired by BeachHacks, a hackathon that brings together programmers and developers from all over the universities to work on innovative projects, is a testament to the power of collaboration and community. By working together and sharing ideas, we can achieve great things.

In essence, this game represents the intersection of creativity and innovation, providing inspiration to programmers everywhere to continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. Whether you're a seasoned developer or just starting out, this game can serve as a reminder that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. So let this game inspire you to reach new heights, break down barriers, and achieve your goals.

What it does

The character will continue to run forward until they meet an obstacle, then it's up to the player to type the right word in order to jump over, or duck under the obstacle.

How we built it

This game is built within Unity3D. The sprites are generated using OpenAI Dall-E.

Challenges we ran into

Setting up collaboration with unity. Our team had to learn Unity3D on the spot. Some unusual bugs like spontaneous crashing when the character died.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learning a game engine on the spot can be very stressful but very rewarding as well.

What we learned

Making a typing game a more action-oriented experience can be difficult.

What's next for Word Runner

Some polish will do this game well, as well as adding more phrases, and actions for the character to complete. Instead of just jumping and ducking, it would be fun to break obstacles or pickup items.

What a rush! Came in second place at BeachHacks 24-hour hackathon, and I couldn't be more proud of my team! It was our first time participating, and the energy was electric from start to finish. We brainstormed, designed, and coded like there was no tomorrow, fueled by caffeine and a passion for innovation. Huge shoutout to the winners and all the other teams who brought their A-game! Can't wait for the next hackathon adventure! #beachhacks #hackathon #secondplace #teamwork #innovation #codinglife #nevergiveup #adventureawaits
