Inspiration

With millions of people finding friends and partners online, we thought why not dogs. Certain dog owners have difficulty connecting with their peers in their immediate neighborhood. Some dogs require more attention and special care, and will not play with just about anybody. Socializing is not often easy. This is where the inspiration comes from for Woofmee. We wanted to do an app where dog owners can select specifically a bestie for their dog, based on their needs and characteristics.

What it does

Woofmee allows dog owners to register their pets by uploading a picture, inputting characteristics, and a small bio in order to find a play bestie. The user has a feed from which to choose from and can start directly a discussion with them in order to schedule the next play date.

How we built it

The web app was entirely built as a react project when it comes to the user interfaces. We used Redux to create a global state, making it easier to work with. Additionally, for the design, we used Material UI. When it comes to the hosting, user authentication, database (firestore), and storage for the images; it was all accomplished by leveraging Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

Creating the chat function was probably the most challenging part. We needed to figure out how to structure the data, and how to use Firebase accordingly. In addition, making the website be responsive also came to be a challenge for some of our team members as well as working with Material UI.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our accomplishments can be summed up like this: ending the hackathon with exactly the product we wanted to have, building the chat function: none of us had done something like that before, and not being stuck on an error for more than 20 minutes.

What we learned

There are several things we learned during this hackathon including: how to use React, how to work collaboratively using Git and GitHub, how to delegate the work based on each one' strengths, and how to debug persistent issues.

What's next for Woofmee

Change the world of dogs :)
