COVID-19 pandemic took most schools using traditional teaching methods by surprise. With no time to prepare assignments and teaching plans, schooling came to a halt. After some days of deliberation, some resorted to various ways to continue engaging the students at home. Using google classrooms , whatsapp , zoom , hangouts etc. With most recording hardly 50% success. This was due to a number of factors, like inability to use the platforms , platform not tailored to suit student co-operation , time limit , switching between different apps to conduct quizzes or tests ,internet costs etc.

It was in this light, that we were inspired to come up the idea of creating an all-inclusive synchronous learning tool, with video conferencing features, and exams features soo that institutions can continue schooling online seamlessly. As well as benefit students who are unable to continue be school because their institutions have not set up an alternative.

How I built it:

WiredTutor was built in less than a week with collaboration between our team and a group of headteachers. We set up the tutor search & booking system. Then continued to work on Video conferencing for the live classrooms that supports **attendance taking , **individual user call-outs, **timed group breakouts etc. And then deploying some open source apps for the quiz room and video store sections.

Challenges I ran into:

As we all had different skill set & experiences, It was hard race we ran to get the goal accomplished.

We had a hard time setting up the video conferencing system.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of:

Being able to set up a ready-to-use live classes portal , tutor booking , and quiz system. All working now!

What I learned:

It was not easy because some started without any knowledge in programming, we learnt alot while working on the dream. Also we learnt some manipulations around SSH and ruby on rails. And most of all, learning that anything is possible to do when under pressure.

What's next for WiredTutor:

We are look forward to implementing other solutions to make it very simple yet efficient to use. As well as doing some marketing so we can be the gateway to online learning in Africa.

  1. Collaborations with Telco's to enable free site browsing in order to make it accessible for more under-served students.
  2. Incentive based learning & tutoring : Earn whiles learning / tutoring.
  3. Quality controlled learning & tutoring : Verify / validating the progress of students using blockchain.
  4. After class analytics for each member. And more.....
