Inspiration

In our school, we noticed that many students did not practice basic cybersecurity and internet safety rules. This inspired us to create an app to address the demand for cybersecurity education in our community.

What it does

WingWarden uses interactive quizzes to teach the user 5 main cybersecurity lessons: Cybersecurity/Basic Definitions, Network Security, Data Confidentiality, Perimeter Security, and Identity Protection. Each lesson contains 5 questions, each with 3 possible answer choices. If the user answers a question incorrectly, then they are shown the correct answer and an explanation. In order to master a lesson and move on to the next lesson, the user must get all 5 questions correct.

How we built it

We used MIT App Inventor to build and code WingWarden.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges that we ran into was ensuring that our app was fun, engaging, and effective but also achievable in our time constraints. This required us to create multiple iterations of our pseudo code and app functionalities, an essential part of the design process. Although it wasn't easy, we are very happy with how our final app flow turned out.

Another main challenge we ran into when coding the app was smoothly implementing a UI design into MIT App Inventor. We had the plan to incorporate an aesthetically pleasing user interface; however, with the platform's UI limitations, we needed to revamp our vision so that it still looked professional but also functional.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud that we were able to successfully develop an app that can serve a purpose in our school and community. The process was very fun and we all thoroughly enjoyed working together.

What we learned

In the process of developing WingWarden, we learned how to use applications MIT App Inventor, Figma, and Canva. We also learned how to properly conduct surveys and make conclusions based on the collected data through the survey we launched. Overall, we learned how to collaborate and work well as a team, assessing our strengths and weaknesses in order to ensure that each team member was working on what they could achieve best.

What's next for WingWarden

We plan on creating a clean, professional version of WingWarden using Android Studio. It is our goal for it to be educational and succinct in order to encourage the use of internet safety policy in our everyday lives.
