Inspiration
Like many others, The Whisk Taker team grew up with games before even having the faintest idea about cooking. My friends and I would pour hours of our time into unlocking the silliest (but cutest) of cosmetics for all sorts of characters. We also find ourselves taking the time to cook for each other but rarely for ourselves. This spawned the idea of Whisk Taker.
What it does
Whisk Taker externalizes self-care. It turns the task of cooking for one into an act of caring for a digital companion. Users prepare real recipes to level their mascot. These points unlock cosmetic packs, unique music, and treats for their mascot. It tricks the brain into cooking healthy meals by gamifying the accountability we usually reserve for others.
How we built it
All music and sounds were produced in Logic Pro X by Laura B. The logos, icons, and mascots were produced in Affinity by Ladna Straw. The initial UX and UI were developed using Fastshot from the Shipyard pack. I then moved the repository to my local WebStorm IDE for RevenueCat integration and further customization. The app is written in React Native and TypeScript. Expo was used for local testing.
Challenges we ran into
Apple's distribution policies were a major hurdle. I did not know that I had to link a bank account and fill out tax forms just to deploy on TestFlight. I may have missed this in The RevenueCat troubleshooting docs but as a result I spent two days going in circles trying to identify the error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have collaborated on something we are all passionate about. We successfully designed a space where artists and creators of all sorts can collaborate to create unique packs.
What we learned
We learned so much. We gained a deeper understanding of the software tools we all used. We also learned to simply manage stress.
What's next???
We want to fully realise the collaborative platform. The goal is to partner with chefs, musicians, and visual artists to create exclusive "Creator Packs." This turns the app into a gallery where different art forms come together to encourage better eating habits.
