Inspiration
The inspiration for What2Eat originates from the common frustrating, socially awkward situation of deciding where to eat with a group of people. Nobody wants to assert their preferences as choice of food is and should be up to each individual, instead reverting to being overly agreeable. We want to create an alternative to this awkward scenario. We drew inspiration from Kahoot, due to its fun and visually appealing nature.
What it does
What2Eat allows a group of people to collaboratively and quickly contribute to a decision about where to eat, based on their answers to simple, fun questions. What2Eat intelligently associates user responses with restaurants, ultimately delivering an optimally satisfying recommendation.
How we built it
What2Eat is a web app, built in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It uses MongoDB as the database service, the Socket.io library for real-time interactivity and Node.js for the server environment.
Challenges we ran into
Our lack of experience in developing software proved to create many challenges. We needed to learn how to use MongoDB, Socket.io and Node.js, and the short amount of time to do this resulted in the server-side not being functional. We were also challenged by deciding in which order we should complete tasks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the pitch video, because it does our idea of What2Eat justice, despite the full product still being in development. We are also proud of the user interface, which emphasizes the fun involved in a 'round' of What2Eat.
What we learned
We learned how to work with MongoDB, Socket.io and Node.js, as well as how to pitch a product effectively. We also developed our teamwork skills, such as how to organize meetings and collaborate despite having busy schedules.
What's next for What2Eat
We hope to expand our database to be inclusive of real Australian restaurants, so it can be used as intended.
