Inspiration
Our motivation for creating "What's Up UCI" was to address the limitations of the existing campus group website at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The current website is primarily designed for showcasing major and professional events, making it overwhelming and less suitable for discovering smaller, diverse activities. We believed that there should be a more user-friendly alternative for students to easily find and participate in a wide range of club events.
What it does
"What's Up UCI" is essentially a bulletin board that allows students to easily access information about various club events. Users can explore events in six different categories: Cultural, Religious, Sports, Greek Life, Arts, and STEM. It simplifies the process of discovering and signing up for club events at UCI.
How we built it
Our project was built using HTML to create the website's structure, CSS for styling, and JavaScript to integrate Google APIs. Additionally, we incorporated small tools like Google Translate to enhance the website's accessibility.
Challenges we ran into
We encountered several challenges during the development process. One of our initial goals was to implement an interactive feature that would allow students to add their own events, including details such as date, time, location, and event descriptions. Unfortunately, due to time constraints or technical difficulties, we were unable to implement this feature. We also intended to add a search bar and filters to help users find activities that cater to their specific interests, but these features were not completed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite our project being incomplete, we are proud of the solid and sleek design we achieved. We successfully added basic elements and applied styling to create a visually appealing and easy-to-navigate website.
What we learned
Throughout this project, our team members gained valuable experience with web development languages such as CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. We learned these languages while working on our project, and it was an insightful learning experience.
What's next for What's Up UCI
In the future, we aim to address the project's flaws and bring our initial ideas to fruition. This may involve adding features like user-generated event postings, a search bar, and filters to enhance the website's functionality and usability.
