Inspiration
As the three of us are core members of an Indie game dev studio, we decided we wanted to do the hackathon as a learning experience- both for our individual skillsets and as a team. The three of us love science in its various forms, so wetlands management won out as the topic due to John's existence as a Subject Matter Expert.
What it does
Wetland Workshop is an educational click-based mobile-type game in the vein of Doodle God, Alxemy, PotionCraft, and MySims. Players will have the objective of creating all the different types of wetlands via combining different amounts of basic resources. Once complete, the wetland will unlock an entry on a world map, prompting further exploration and ultimately conservation efforts.
How we built it
Wetland Workshop is entirely created within the Godot game engine which runs on GDScript, which is similar to Python. All visual assets are original, as well as all sound effects. Music is open source/non copyrighted material.
Challenges we ran into
Creating an entire game within 36 hours is no small feat. Most of the legwork was done in the planning stage, figuring out how to balance gamification with education and time constraints.
