Inspiration

Our inspiration for Wealthsimple for All came from the Wealthsimple Foundation and their goal to bridge the education gap in Canada and break the barriers to financial literacy. Everyone should have the means to educate themselves on investing and smart money management. Wealthsimple makes this easy with intuitive and easy-to-use investing and tax technology and the many educational resources available on their site.

What it does

Wealthsimpe for All continues Wealthsimple's goal to bridge the educational gap by providing users with limited investing knowledge the ability to find personalized information. Reading financial information and documentation can be overwhelming and confusing, so our app breaks the most important information for investing beginners down to more digestible content.

How we built it

The frontend of our app was built using React for the framework and SASS for the styling. Our backend was built using SQL, MySQL, Knex, Node.js, and Express. The database was used to create the carousels showing information related to investing.

Challenges we ran into

We had initially wanted to connect to an API that could translate text based on what language the user clicked, however, we did not have enough time to complete this feature. Our team was composed of three web developers, so we found ourselves having to take on roles that we may not have taken on normally. For example, we had to learn how to use Figma to design the initial prototype. Another challenge we ran into, was that it was quite tricky to replicate some of the features of the Wealthsimple site.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to leverage each individual group members' skillsets to our advantage and push ourselves to create a project that we may not have created outside of the Hackathon. We each learned new skills, whether it be learning how to use Figma or how to set a SQL database, and were able to implement these in our project.

What we learned

We learned that our group makes a great team and that can achieve a lot under pressure!

What's next for Wealthsimple for All

The next thing we would like to implement for our app would be connecting a translating API that could dynamically change the text based on users choice of language. We would also like to be able to add more to our database so users have more choice of information to educate themselves with.
