Inspiration
Sharks help maintain the health of ocean ecosystems. A healthy ocean undoubtedly depends on sharks. Overexploitation, through targeted as well as incidental catch, is one of the main global threats facing shark survival. Overfishing is driving sharks to the brink of extinction - with many populations down by 80 percent. Tens of millions are killed each year for their meat, fins, liver, and other products, as many fisheries are unregulated and catches are significantly under-reported In the Oceana Study, researchers estimated that as many as 100 million sharks are still caught and killed worldwide due to bycatch, illegal fishing and the demand for shark fins. Moreover, Every three seconds a shark is killed. These heartbreaking results drove us to our app: We ❤️ Sharks.
What it does
Our app provides a social platform where users can interact and participate in many events that creates awareness for the need of protecting sharks. Our e-commerce services provide an opportunity to bring out shark-themed products. We also furnish kids through our quiz and game section. This will raise awareness through gamification. Today's kids are tomorrow's citizens. So, any change to be made has to be taken into account from a very young age. We ease this process by including a streaming facility for animation series and web series related to sharks and it's protection. Our cartoon and memes page allows users to express their talent to the world. It is said that an image speaks 1000 times louder than words. Apart from the above features, users can anonymously report shark finning, illegal and unscientific ways of fishing. We also provide discussion forums that allow users to interact with people all over the world and there are also many talks and events.
How we built it
Our team organized a meet via Google Meet and interacted about the idea and gave it a proper structure. From the basic structure, we made the prototype of our application in Figma. This prototype paved the way to bring our app to life. We built the front-end of our app using Flutter and the back-end using Django.
Challenges we ran into
Lack of awareness and scientific knowledge is one of the main reasons for the overexploitation of sharks by people. The need to change the view of people is one of the biggest challenges that exist now. Most of the existing games and news picturise sharks as something too dangerous.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First of all, our team is proud to be a part of the great shark loving community. When our team ran through the idea we were able to understand various problems faced by sharks. And now we are glad that we could do this app to raise awareness.
What we learned
This theme helped us to level up our awareness about sharks. Technically speaking we could understand the basics of Flutter, Figma and Django.
What's next for We ❤️ Sharks
We have to make the public aware of the cruelties towards sharks. We will start this by creating awareness among our friends.
