Inspiration: WayToScale was inspired by today's data-driven world. In the world today, traditional forms of marketing like advertisement or fliers are outdated. Today's marketing should be consumer driven at targeted at each individual customer. However, this would not be possible without good data-analytics.

What it does

WayToScale is a modular embedded systems device that is designed to provide real-time data analytics of consumer behaviour by providing information on how, when and where goods are being picked off supermarket shelves. The target market will be major supermarket outlets and consumer food brands. A platform is mounted above our device that will carry the weight of the goods. When a consumer picks the item off the shelf, it provides a time-stamp on the exact time and venue of the supermarket the good was at.

Consumer behaviour is pushed onto our back-end web server via a IoT hardware module. Predictive analytics are run on the data and presented in a user-friendly format.

From there on, we can know the following information: (1) if the good is placed back onto the shelf (2) if the good is eventually purchased (3) What time of the day/week/month/year consumers are more likely to be purchasing a certain item

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

We had to learn Django and getting postgres to work on Django. Integrating all the sub modules in the stack.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we managed to do a prototype for the full product, incorporating the mechanical hardware, embedded systems, and software all within one night. Not to mention a full business pitch deck to present out hack.

What we learned

We built a prototype shelf and weight measurement system. The outputs were then connected to a Espresso Lite Microcontroller which pushed the data through Wi-Fi to a back-end server that helped to visualise and plot the data in a web interface. The server used postgres database to store data. It also was able to detect low levels of products on the shelf and send an email to alert the user/enterprise. It also includes PayPal API.

What's next for WayToScale

WayToScale will work on improving the performance of its mechanical prototype. Right now, we have a spring loaded wooden device serving as the platform for the goods to be placed on. For more accurate weight readings, a proper digital weighing scale should be used.
